Bearded iris in Florida

I would like to grow bearded iris in the northern part of Florida, the panhandle section.

I would like to know if anyone has done this successfully.

PS I don't live there right now, but own some property there and thinking of going there to live so can't just 'experiment' and see if they grow.

I had trouble growing bearded iris in Atlanta. They rotted with the heat and the rain.

Now I have a friend in north FL who tried and could not get them to bloom. Good luck!

Mine in Atlanta did great. I had friends on the Texas coast near Houston where the bearded iris grew and bloomed like crazy. I'm just starting to plant some here.

I just found this exchange page, so sorry for posting so late. I have tons of purple iris, including LOTS of medium purple. These bloom about 2 weeks earlier than regular bearded iris. I am thinning them this summer, so let me know if you want them. Email me with your address. I have some dark purple tall bearded, but probably not "blue" enough for you. "Pure As Gold" grows and blooms in Honolulu, zone 10. However, I think the high humidity keeps it from growing vigorously.

Iris are my favorite plant family but I'm in 10 so limited to tropical species. While attractive certainly not as beautiful as the bearded hybrids lol
I've heard that twice flowering types are much more heat tolerant?? I recently got some Brazilian species which has not flowered as yet but is thriving in the heat !! Looks exactly like bearded Iris but the flower is open like Japanese types.
You can grow the aquatic Louisianna types for sure but not nearly as attractive as the beardeds?? gary

If you are in an area where you have nematoads in the soil, they won't last, even if they can take the heat. The nematoads rot the tubers.

I tried them in zone 9a and they grew but never flowered. Moved some from Ohio to here.
