Need entry way ideas

What do you have flanking the entry way of your house? I need ideas! I have a holly bush of some sort on one side, which will likely stay because it's established and healthy, so I won't fix it if it isn't broke. But I don't want another on the other side. Plus, the spot is small, like 2'x3' probably. I have a dry river bed, this empty spot and then a covered walkway up to the door. It just needs something, but I don't know what. I've played with the idea of an italian cypress in a pot, so it doesn't grow huge. But that seems so formal, which my garden is NOT!

Just thought I'd throw it out there for ideas. TIA, Becca

Picture?

We have a forsythia in a large pot off the front porch. It's been there for years and does great. Putting it in a pot does help to keep it's size down.

Well, I didn't want to post a picture, because it's all torn up...with a couple projects. But, of course, I'm planning another. LOL!
Here goes, though! Hope you can make it out despite the mess.

Hello, it really depends on where you live (what zone) how much light it gets whether all day, early in the day or all day, etc.... you might look in to a dwarf pygmy tree or consider a little color and get a taller planter with a decent diameter and relocate this planter. Something like this would be very pretty and give some color.

What do you need to make it more functional? It's difficult to tell from the photos how much room you have to work with. I'd definitely want a small table near the door. Some people want a bench and place to stash shoes and coats. If a mirror would make it more functional for you, I wouldn't hesitate to hang one!

Not much room for anything, but some art on the wall. I would have suggested a runner, but it looks like both doors open towards the hallway and might not be able to clear a rug. Myself, I would paint everything under the chair rail in the same trim color. Not everything has to be decorated.

Try again. Good example of don't believe everything you read on the info tabs in plants in big box stores. Said this should grow up to 12 inches.

A well-maintained bougainvillea would be beautiful in a large pot, but since it would HAVE to be trimmed out of the way, at least towards the entry opening, that might not be possible. How about a very nice clumping bamboo or feathery palm in a large pot? To me it looks like it should be more vertical than wide. And yes a cypress would be too formal for your house.

There are so many plants you could put in a big pot there!
Here is a pic of a hibiscus that I love in its' pot.

the other thought I had was to spend your money on a beautiful glazed pot and put an ordinary palm or whatever in it with some annuals in the bottom.
I have a tea olive in my entry way because I love the fragrance but it's not a lovely thing to look at!
