Questions about Insects

More from the newbie. *grin*

Palmetto Bugs/cockroaches. What role do they play in the garden? Are they good, bad or neutral? I've heard from one person they eat decaying matter, so does that make them good bugs for the garden in that they aid in the decomposition process? I know they're an indoor pest, but they have to be more than that. Even if they are just about the ugliest bug I've ever seen.

Fire ants - how do I know a fire ant? I know they're red but are all red ants fire ants? Are there different shades of red to look for? Size variances?

Mystery insect - this insect takes flight whenever I walk across the lawn. My lawn is a mix of bahia, sedge and st augustine plus a few unknowns and some weeds. It's white-ish, has wings and almost looks like a mini moth. They fly up in groups as there are a lot of them. They don't seem to bite, but instead flee. Are they moths or butterflies? I've seen far more butterflies in the garden than moths. Does anyone have any idea what these may be?

Dragonflies - I've heard they eat other bugs. Are they beneficials?

Beneficials in general - what plants attract beneficials?

Pests - what plants detract the bad bugs?

Thanks in advance!

Don't mean to... bug ya. (couldn't resist. :-D )
