I think I lost her.

She was new last year. I planted in a controversial spot and I knew it at the time. Soil is good, but has some mockorange root competition. Soil erodes a bit...not terrible, but I knew it could be a factor.

I planted montana by itself in a future bed thinking I'll get it going for a year or 2 by the time I get working on that bed. For that reason, I watered, but sometimes forgot about it because it's all by itself way "over there".

I've read it's an early-riser. At this point, my latest riser Dick Ward has shown itself.

I suspect it's now too deep due to soil erosion. I'll keep an eye on the spot. There's still hope. I'll rescue if it shows up.

I take full responsibility for my poor choices. I still wanted to take a moment to wallow & thought you all will understand. Thanks for reading.

My MA is shaded by a tree trunk and takes a while for soil to warm and finally appear. Give it time - its only mid-April.

I'm sorry to hear that Gayle. Paul's right. Give it some more time. montana A is an early riser here,in fact the earliest. I have to watch the weather every year,to see if it needs protection. I'm in a different zone than you,so mines been up up for quite awhile. Phil

mA has been on the top of my purchase list for about 6 years.but I have yet to get one. Was planning on placing a fall order this year but a clogged sewer line blew my budget. I'd called a local guy and he wanted upwards of $300 to rotor root it. My GF Melissa and I rented one with a root cutter for $75 and we've gotten the job done in 95F temperatures. You would all be interested in the looks of the rental guys faces when 42 year old and 70 year old women picked up a 100 foot rooter. Last summer I laid down on my tummy and took pictures of Krossa Regal, Regal Splendor and Blue Angel. The KR and RS were the best photo views I have ever taken so I went back out and shot Sagae from my tummy. Paul, if you can, try it with mA. It seems to work best with the more upright hostas, which mA is in my opinion. I'm curious how long the spongy root mess from a maple tree lasts in the ground. The roots we cut out of the sewer had to be from a maple that had been cut down over 10 years ago. Theresa

That's crazy! We have had unusually warm weather here in Utah too and temps should be near 50 for the next week. I hope mine doesn't come up early. I did see some daylily shoots coming up though so I guess I better check the hosta. This whole winter has been very strange, only a couple of short cold blasts while the rest has been relatively warm. No snow on the ground most of the time. Linda

MA is an early riser when planted as others. Knowing that I planted it behind a Green Giant arborvitae and a tree trunk, so it will come up a little late. I would check how deep it is planted now after it appears, and possibly lift it, putting the soil taken off at the top underneath. To prevent it coming up too early (and get hit by frosts) you can also put a pile of mulch on top of it.

Mine is up and leafed out here in Effingham..Maybe you can take your finger and gently poke around to find the pip.I bet that it is on its way up..

I'm on the northern edge of zone 5 in Iowa, and my MAs are just barely poking out of the ground in the shadiest spot, and are only up about 3 inches in the sunniest spot. Give it a bit more time, and if your area has been as dry as mine, you could also water it--my soil is way too dry, or was until it poured rain and then snowed last night. Lack of sufficient moisture will greatly slow the emergence of hostas, especially the early ones.
