Montana Aureomarginata is up!

Crazy plant. We've had an unseasonably warm January and Montana aureomarginata is up three inches. Now I have to protect the thing to keep it from freezing when we get a predicted arctic freeze in February. Sheesh.

Oh dear too early for the poor thing, how long is your freeze in feb expected to be? Protection is relative. If it does get zapped it will put up new growth and be fine.

We have more snow and cold coming next week, its not much fun, thankfully none of mine are even thinking of stirring yet.

That's crazy! We have had unusually warm weather here in Utah too and temps should be near 50 for the next week. I hope mine doesn't come up early. I did see some daylily shoots coming up though so I guess I better check the hosta. This whole winter has been very strange, only a couple of short cold blasts while the rest has been relatively warm. No snow on the ground most of the time.

Based on all of the advise above I treated the sick mA with RoundUp this AM and will give it another shot next week. I may even drench the area around the mA with a chlorine solution. This may help kill the virus in the soil and I guess it couldn't hurt since i'll be getting rid of all the soil. My plan is to dig up and get rid of the soil in about a 3' diameter circle. Then I'll line the new hole with newspaper and landscape fabric, refill with new soil, compost etc. and replant. I intend to do this within a few weeks as the sick mA occupies a prominent place in the yard and don't want to wait until fall to replace it. Whatever this virus is it seems to be more deadly than HVX , or at least the ones I've seen in situ and previously posted here as mine went from one affected leaf in an otherwise robust hosta to a bunch of spindly pips the following spring. Maybe it's one of the other viruses referenced in Babka's post or even one yet to be identified. I doubt it remained dormant and originated from my original 12 year old mA. Babka's reference suggested that viruses may also be contracted via pollen and those winged pollinators can certainly travel long distances. I'll probably never know just what it is or where it came from. It would be nice to know but moot - out she goes.

mA has been on the top of my purchase list for about 6 years.but I have yet to get one. Was planning on placing a fall order this year but a clogged sewer line blew my budget. I'd called a local guy and he wanted upwards of $300 to rotor root it. My GF Melissa and I rented one with a root cutter for $75 and we've gotten the job done in 95F temperatures. You would all be interested in the looks of the rental guys faces when 42 year old and 70 year old women picked up a 100 foot rooter. Last summer I laid down on my tummy and took pictures of Krossa Regal, Regal Splendor and Blue Angel. The KR and RS were the best photo views I have ever taken so I went back out and shot Sagae from my tummy. Paul, if you can, try it with mA. It seems to work best with the more upright hostas, which mA is in my opinion. I'm curious how long the spongy root mess from a maple tree lasts in the ground. The roots we cut out of the sewer had to be from a maple that had been cut down over 10 years ago. Theresa

Manyhosta, the textures in that bed are amazing (I'm nuts about texture!). I have a penchant for the dwarf version of the goatbear's plant (and keep splitting them to make more) but have one that is standard size. Your MA simply glows! What's not to love? :D

Yikes,

We have had a lot of single digit mornings and they are warning of a blizzard on Tuesday here in SE MA. I did see one lonely tulip poking up in the front which surprised the heck out of me.

The trees here have started to bud out. Way to early for me. I had also better check my hosta. Many of the daylilies stay green all year and everything else I grow is in a greenhouse environment living the great life. Too short of a winter even by Florida standards. I have coats I have not worn yet. We are to have a cool week coming up. I hope so.

Just checked mine - it's also been mild here on the West Coast, with double digit daytime temps expected for the upcoming week, dropping to between 6 and 8 degrees at night.
Will also have to watch, and no doubt protect some hostas over the coming months!

I buried it under about two feet of leaves and under a huge nursery pot, so no pictures, sorry! I should have taken some when I had the chance. lol! And it's Cold out there today! I think it will be ok.

I'll go check mine tomorrow. It might be up too.

And, I have one pip showing on Mama plantaginea, my oldest hosta from 2010. I covered her to avoid sunshine, hoping that slows her down.

I know more cold is in the winter season.
