How about posting some hosta garden photos?

Hi everyone,

I have dabbled in hostas for a few years. For the first 2 years Ilimited myself to 3 purchases (so I could care for them and keep them alive). Last year I had a baby in April so I did not buy anything. This year I figured I could buy 6 to make up for last year. Somehow 6 has turned into 12 and I have a wishlist of 10 for next year! I guess I am now a hostaholic.

I was hoping those of you with wonderful mature plants and gardens could post some pictures. Looking at them nourishes my soul and gives me something to look forward to. Thanks in advance for sharing your pix.

Welcome to GW. We're a great enabling, er, support group here for hostaholism! And just like any 12-step, the first step is admitting your problem. So, you're there!

My garden is FAR from mature. I started in 2007. I think I'm around 275 different varieties and about 300 total plants. I pretty much have 1 garden, spanning the back of my lot (100' wide) and it comes forward along the sides of the lot about 30-50' in each direction. I have 2 smaller gardens that I've started for this year.

Great photo!

I hope more will post their photos. It's great seeing individual plants but I love seeing the entire landscape.

You are correct, pnbrown. I'll post a proper pic of just the rhubarb for you. I have no idea what variety it is because these six plants were already here when we bought the place in 2001. The previous owners where here for a decade or so and they didn't plant it either (I got to ask about all sorts because it was a private sale). No idea how old they are, but they're going strong with no care at all except a little water when it's dry. Every stalk is bright red, too, almost right to the leaf. This photo was from a couple of weeks ago, I think. What I've gathered from the neighbours is that the larger barn on the left was used for pigs. The smaller barn in the middle was converted (from what, I'm not sure) to a custom lambing barn by the people we bought the place from. We use both barns for hay and straw as we don't have lambs or pigs, just a horse and mini donkey. The shed on the right is their old chicken coup. I would LOVE to have laying hens, but there's just not enough time in the day right now with two little kids. It's my tack and grain room for now. Perhaps when the girls are older it could fulfill it's original purpose again. That's all farmland around our yard. I don't know anyone around here who DOESN'T plant in rows. :) I'm actually the oddball because I work the whole garden with manual tools, except for the initial rototilling in the spring. Most of the farm wives here, including my mother-in-law, plant in looong rows with enough spacing in between so that the rototiller can pass between when needed. I'm not fond of that option because I figure when the plants are established, the tiller will chop up their roots that have spread out. Obviously there's some fault in my theory because my mother-in-law always gets fine production. Ah, well... to each their own! So my question is this. I give my rows a lot of space. Maybe not always as much as recommended on the seed packets, but a good deal more than intensive gardeners tend to give them. When my plants are approaching maturity, you don't see a whole lot of soil. I find it hard to understand why it would be beneficial to cram them any closer together? My tomatoes probably don't need as much room as I give them, I'll admit that. When you get results like this, though, in zone 2... I'm not keen on changing my methods any time soon.

For early starting of non-hardy plants indoors use a nail to punch some holes in the bottom of margarine containers, individual yogurt cups, etc. for drainage, plant seeds in them. Or cut tops off of milk, bleach, etc. containers, punch holes in the bottom. Can cut off top, use bottoms of small packages which are like wax- or plastic-coated cardboard, e.g. single-serving milk containers. If you don't have a space where they can drain without problems, and have a container that can handle some drainage, (e.g. cookie sheet), put them on it. If there's a problem with the plant container standing in water, find something small that is expendable, or a short board, etc. to put under the pot to hold it above the drained water. Join a garden club, horticultural society, then trade seeds, slips, started plants, etc. (but if they hold a plant exchange, they'll probably charge a transfer fee to help cover the group's expenses). Check neighbours, friends to find fellow gardeners (though, gardeners, being inclined to talk about their hobby, you may well know who they are at present). Trade seeds, slips, ideas with them. Grow more than you can use of crops that grow easily at your space, then trade produce with neighbours who grow stuff that you don't or find hard to grow. Frugal forever! joyful

Wow Vanessa you are good!!!! #1,2,4 are correct. You narrowed down #5 to two and English Sunrise is it. #6, 7, 8, & 9 are correct - Why did you pick Minuteman over Patriot? #10 I'm not sure about. I had thought it was Inniswood but after looking at those on the Forum I figured I had it wrong. It could be one of the two you suggested. I'll post a couple of pictures from later in the season last year and tell me what you think.

Thanks ThisisMelissa, Paul_in_MN, and hosta_freak. These are great photos. Also, ThisisMelissa, you are a total enabler. Since it seems you average about 100 hosta a year my 12 for this year seems like nothing;). I am seriously considering buying some off my wish list for next year.

Thank you all for showing your gardens fully leaved out! Now I have only hostas peaking out from under the mulch.

paul_in_mn, great gardens. In your grouping called 'Leaves' one leave in the second row, right, struck me with the contrast of very dark green and very light green. What is the name of this hosta, please?

Oh those photos are breathtaking! So green, so lush. Almost makes me want to go back to Illinois where I grew up. But then I think of Winter and snow and voles, and humidity and mosquitos.

HH, with a lot of water you can even combine hostas and Sedums!
I had saved some nice threads from 09, from hosta_freak Phil and hey_j, but they are beyond the max of 67 pages GW saves and their search function does not work for me. But this time of year it is good to bump up interesting older threads, I think. We will have 4 days in the 40s next week, wow!
