Can I start seeds now?

Hiya everyone,

I'm sitting here in the wet old UK feeling extremly depressed and tearful. We have had an awful week where one of my cats, a 20 month old Ocicat, was diagnosed with Degenerative Bone Disease and is going to need extensive surgery with several months recovery time.

I need something positive to think about and look forward to whilst this is happening.

Can I start a few seeds inside in a heated propogator (or unheated, I have one of each)to help me get through this or is it too early?

Also if you could read my other thread, I'd love to see any pics of the daylilies I have just added to my spring order.

I don't have any of the ones you want to see pics of,but can tell you it is ok to start seeds now.I try to plant in deep pots if they are going to be in them all winter so the roots can grow.I also just grow mine in a southern facing window.Once I plant the seeds I cover the pot with plastic wrap and a rubberband for the greenhouse.Once they germinate,I cut slits in the wrap so they can grow through until I am sure all seeds that are viable are growing.I remove the wrap and bottom water when they get dry.I have a cross of America's Most Wanted X Woman At The Well started now.They are 3" tall with 4 out of 6 seeds growing.

Nikki, I just wanted you to know that I recently planted some seeds in pots and brought them inside. I have three new babies breaking through as of now. I am axious to see how many I will get from the seeds I planted. I have lots of new babies outside that I planted around Aug/Sept. I am really excited about the indoor ones though as I have never started seed inside. Good luck...Ellie

crabjoe, Check with your state's Extension Service. Each county should have it's own Cooperative Extension Office which provides free publications and information for the asking. They will have valuable vegetable/gardening tables available specifically for your area determined by universities and horticultural research scientists who have collected data from growing those crops in your state. Your tax dollars are already paying for this service so you may as well get some use out of it. Vegetable Planting and Planning Calendar for Missouri (download the pdf) complete with spring and fall planting dates (underneath the spring planting dates for appropriate crops), how much to plant per person, etc. They can also tell you the average last frost date for your area and ideal planting times for specific crops and varieties in your area. What can I start from seed now in zone 10?

I was planning on asking something like this myself tonight. I am in zone9. My cukes and tomatoes are done. I pulled up my cucumbers yesterday and one row of my maters today. I still have 2 rows of tomatoes to pull up, maybe tomorrow if I can get through the heat. This is my first big veggie garden, so I'm on a trial & error run myself. I went ahead and planted a row of peas which I think will do OK, I also put down a row of okra, which my dad planted his a few weeks ago and they are doing great, so I think these will too. I still have several rows to fill if I can and produce a nice fall crop in time before time to plant my winter crop. I think tomorrow I will get down some corn and a heirloom variety of pole bean I bought on a whim. Like I said, a lot will be trial & error till I see what does good at what point. I'll save my carrots, greens, turnips and such for winter crop. I am interested to see what else might work this time of year!! Thanks for the thread!

If the containers are placed where they get some afternoon or high shade, you can try a lettuce mix. You have to harvest early though. Same for basil - it can survive as long as the sun isn't beating down on it all day. 'Wild' arugula will grow during the summer - it doesn't die out after blooming like regular arugula. I used to grow it year round. Some chicories don't seem to mind the heat either. Yes, definitely! What perennials are you trying to grow? I would start them outside rather than inside this time of year, they don't mind a chill and will germinate when ready if kept moist. I start mine in a flat and as they germinate, after they have a true set of leaves, put them in a small pot to grow over the summer. You can overwinter them in a protected spot if they seem too small to put in the ground in fall.
