Time to harvest the Hawaiian cooking banana and the finger lady Indonesian banana. And some tomatoes.

And a Chinese pumpkin. This one weights about 6 pounds

Half goes into a West Indies soup

The other half goes to a pumpkin roll. I wish you could all be here for the party!

Happy Halloween! This is a display around the corner from my house.

Thank you Felix, I usually do a very elaborate Thanksgiving and I invite everybody we know that don't have family here, or is single. This way they don't feel lonely. And I buy the best organic turkey that I can afford and never cook the same way twice. We always have a different theme. I will be thinking about this year and guests... Thank you Christine, We will have to ask Michael about trying to keep a crop for next year, I think he was saying something about it. This way we don't have to order again. Especially the three varieties that are hard to get. That is the reason I bought the Beauregard, because I thought the other ones were not coming. Next week, I will finish harvesting the other bed of sweet potatoes and the pumpkins. About the kale, I like to make a Portuguese kale soup with white beans and sausage. Brenda Thank you. The sweet potatoes are in a raised bed, but sometimes I plant them in big containers. I did my potatoes in a container last winter. I should of explain better about the order of the tubers. Starting from the top: Beauregard, planted more slips, order from Burpee Amish Porto Rico, less slips than 1, order from Sand Hill Preservation. Dawn recently posted on storage of squash and pumpkins. I don't recall exactly where. First of all, it doesn't hurt to leave them on the vine after they test mature (fingernail test). If saving seed, then try to wait a month after the fruit tests ripe, before you cut it and take the seed. This additional time is used by the seed to absorb more nutrients, thus giving the seed a longer viability in storage. This additional month can be on or off the vine. I simply pick my squash and put them somewhere where it doesn't get too hot and where it won't freeze. Try to keep them dry. That's about it. In past years I've stashed them behind the couch, under the bed and used them for door stops! Bon, you will most likely get A LOT more squash before frost. I'm always amazed at how many are hiding in the foliage. Last year, even though I combed the garden, looking for stragglers, I still didn't see a 30 lb Old Timey Cornfield Pumpkin, only finding it after it froze and spoiled. George

Seed Saving Network Meeting Sunday December 8

Well, we finally met on December 15. Dorothy asked me to post something about the meeting, as, due to a personal matter, she and Glenn could not come. Here's the write up which should be coming out in the local paper. Dorothy, I dug some sunchokes on the 14th, and just to be safe, I brought a couple with me. So I handed out a few to those present. Hopefully we can meet again, say in February, though I will already be teaching an introductory beekeeping class, by then. George ----------------------------------------------------- The Green Country Seed Savers Network met last Sunday to swap seeds and provide information on heirloom varieties that do well in our area. Coleen Thornton with Heaven Sent Food and Fiber offered seeds of the following varieties: Hulless Oats Hulless Barley Chowder peas Pinkeye Purple-Hull Peas Black Sesame Seeds Homesteading and agricultural magazines were offered for anyone who wanted them. George McLaughlin then offered a mini-workshop on staple crops featuring sweet potatoes as the highlight, telling participants that without the sweet potato many southern families would not have survived the depression in the 1930s. He offered samples of Red Wine Velvet (George's favorite), Ozark County which was often passed from generation to generation as a wedding gift an Appalachian tradition, Cordiner Red and Brinkley White. George also indicated that Grand Asia did very well this year. Some varieties do better with long dry spells while others seem to do better with milder weather as we had for the 2013 growing season. George indicated he will be offering sweet potato slips for sale next spring for people in the community who want to grow their own. He encouraged everyone to eat more sweet potatoes for their excellent nutrition and cost effectiveness, as well as the sweet taste. Historically Americans ate up to 60# of sweet potatoes a year in the 1930s and 40s. These are a staple crop that grow well here and should be a part of everyone's garden. George also indicated that he grew this year's crop under black plastic and mulch with irrigation reducing the weeds and likely increasing the yield. He will be growing next year's crop the same way to get a definitive result on using black plastic in the garden for increasing production and reducing labor. Instead of what many of us know as "Irish" potatoes, George is growing Peruvian potatoes, small and very tasty, he is working to grow them from seed rather than from cuttings due to the disease issues many potatoes get here. This can be a challenge as our hot summers don't allow the potato seeds to ripen well and the seeds are not true to type as the divisions ("seed" potatoes) are. Corn, too, has historically played a key role as a staple crop, but it is very hard to keep from becoming contaminated with GMOs through wind pollination. The Tahlequah area is lucky in the fact that there is little GMO corn grown here so the 1/2 mile isolation distance that corn needs is a bit easier for our community. Unfortunately, the plant population size for saving seeds also needs to be high. Seed savers need at least 200 plants planted a minimum of 12" on apart on all sides, in a block formation (rather than rows). There are no GMO varieties of white or blue corn and these two colors are recessive genes, so by planting them, one can always tell if there's been any cross pollination with a neighbors corn plantings. If the cob has any yellow kernels, its been hybridized by wind or insect pollination and shouldn't be used for the following year's plantings. To save seed from corn, use cobs, completely dried on the plant from the middle of the planting area to reduce the risk of cross-pollination. George grows dent corn for meal rather than sweet corn, as he developed a preference for this corn in Mexico when he was a missionary there. Corn is very easy and cheap to process, older varieties tend to be much higher in protein in the range of 10-12%, rather than the 8% in modern corn varieties. It is therefore more nutritious and better for feeding livestock as well. George also offered growing instructions and divisions for Jerusalem Artichokes a native plant to this area, another staple crop option and a member of the sunflower family, therefore a pollen producer for honey bees. The Chinese pumpkin looks great. I did not plant the seeds that I got from you,yet. I want to plant them next season. The soup looks so good. I love soups.
I always marvel on how you present your culinary masterpieces,the pumpkin roll is beautiful.

That soup and pumpkin roll were delicious! Everybody like them. We also had a rustic rye homemade bread and a spinach salad with cranberries and roasted red onions.
Next time we have a party, you are invited. :)

Thank you NC, I used the roasted pumpkin for the pumpkin roll, also roasted the seeds at 400 for about 5-10 minutes, added olive oil, salt and pepper. I am including the recipe for you to make it, it also has a video that you can watch. Have fun and invite friends over, it is kind of big.

The Hawaiian bananas will be used in soups, empanadas, tostones, chips and maybe mangu and mofongo.

Last night we went to take pictures and the neighbor said hi and put everything in motion. It was fantastic! it had voices too, real scary! lol

There are other pumpkins bigger than the one I cooked, we are giving them them away, with recipes too.

The soup came out really tasty. It had cubed and peeled pumpkin, potatoes and carrots. Onion, garlic and the ingredient to make it West Indies, curry powder. At the end we added a little bit of cream, parsley and roasted pumpkin seeds.

Remember the flowers that I could not remember the name? they are with the pumpkin roll and are the knee-length cosmos.

Thank you. I am having ripe Beefmasters for a while, a lot of BLT's last week. Sometimes I am using oriental greens that I am growing, they are spicy like arugula, they are great!

We are starting Halloween parties, next one everybody is invited! I hope you can come, I will make a different roll.LOL

Hi Silvia, You certainly had a great harvest today! When I see your tomatoes it makes me anxious for mine to ripen. Some varieties are getting very close. Really nice looking bananas. Is that Chinese pumpkin the "Papaya Sweet'??? I cooked one up this evening for supper but it was much smaller. Mine are ripening grapefruit size.

I have many harvested Seminole pumpkins to eat so I welcome your pumpkin roll recipe. The soup looks so delicious. Wished I liked curry. If I did I'm sure I would love it.

Halloween is going to be a wild time in your neighborhood!

Make sure you watch the video for the pumpkin roll, it is really easy. People who hates pumpkin, loved this roll. At serving I decorated with caramel sauce.

The soup is made anyway you like. The basis for this is cubed pumpkin, potatoes and carrots. Saute onions and garlic, add enough chicken broth to cover. Cook till tender. Blend and serve, spices are optional and put to taste. If you don't like curry you can add sage, or red pepper, whatever you like. Cream is also optional.

The 2 pumpkin vines are mixed in the same bed, only the shape is different, one being round and the other oblong, like the one posted in the picture is the golden, the sweet is more round.
The difference in size might be when they were planted, mine are there for quite a while.

About the tomatoes, remember you asked about the Beefmasters? they are great in a sandwich. But for size, I am getting some huge German Red Strawberry and hearts are my favorites!

I also planted this season some new cherry for me Rosada, they are so prolific! and they are just ripening now. I will report on the taste.

And about the Halloween we celebrate big time, somehow we always managed to live near by people who celebrate. I still remember in Arizona they had the haunted house just for fun, anyone was invited. On Halloween night they had the electric saw at the end and everybody scream! lol

Silvia---In the near past I made pumpkin soup similar to yours only without potatoes. I will include them next time. I didn't watch the Pumpkin Roll but I will.

Where did you buy your fav tomato seeds, German Red Strawberry and Heart? And, when did you start your seeds to get such an early harvest?

I have different kinds of the hearts varieties, I will make a small package for you to try for the next season. I started the tomatoes when I came back from Jamaica, sometime in June. I will look at the dates.

Silvia, I figured you started your tomatoes in June because I started my seeds July 9th and yours are weeks ahead of mine. I have an unknown tear drop shaped yellow cherry that I saw was turning color this morning. Yeah!

The sweet potatoes are so easy to grow that I will probably grow many more next year and give some away. I wonder if they dehydrate well? Is there such thing as sweet potato chips?

I started the tomato seeds according to my calendar the last week of June, after coming from the vacation.

I also got the squash mix, the round are the golden, the oblong are the sweets. I am growing both, equally good flavor!

And yes, they make sweet potato chips. Any root vegetable can be made into chips, including beets. Love the color!

I got it now that you are not mad. :)

Here is what you do. Buy any kind of winter squash you like. Half you used for soup. The other half you roast at 400 F or in your home 200 C. After you measured what you use for the roll, the leftovers can be used as a mashed potatoes or with rice or pasta. My half pumpkin was cooked for about 1/2 hour. I spray oil at the cut end, and put in foil, cut side down, in the baking sheet till done. This will probably depend on the squash used. The seeds required less time to roast.

You are lucky that I have cookbooks of English authors, I have a collection of cookbooks, different kinds. lol

Have fun with the roll, I personally don't like tofee, but I liked in this recipe!
