First order has arrived!

I just got my first order in the mail from Naylor Creek. Hosta planting season is officially on! I was sort of bummed that I did not get a freebie (I guess Hallsons has spoiled me). But my disappointment quickly disappeared when I realized that all of the plants had multiple eyes. Irish Luck has 4 fat ones and Cold Heart has 7 , though only 3 are fatties. Yeah!!

How exciting! It's going to be a while before we get to do any hosta planting here in zone 5 yet, but we can at least enjoy your fun vicariously. :)

"Believe me, I have planned trips to pass by certain stores that I have wanted to visit in the past. I think however with Donahues I will settle for ordering the quart sized plants and growing them out myself." Hey, Miguel, a visit to MN in the early summer/mid summer is great, warm temps during the days, cooling off in the evenings. After living in St. Louis for 8 years I moved back to MN and was frequently heard to say "What a beautiful evening" that first year back. We also have a wonderful arboretum here. So, come on up! I miss the early springs of St. Louis as it doesn't really get springy and beautiful in MN until May. But, oh, those cool summer nights almost make up for the late spring. I visted Donahues last April during their spring open house and bought several gallon pots of clematis. Have also ordered from them via mail with good results. Bobbie

Sorry, Ken & Paul, I'm still living in the dark ages. No DC! Both kids have them, 2 different brands and each believe theirs is superior. One day, I suppose that I will have to convert, as it's already difficult to find 35 mm slide film. There's a downside to living in a warmer Zone, many Hostas and other frost tender perennials are already up and sporting new foliage, but we could have freezing temps at night, well into April. Our last frost date is about April 15, most years. Another disadvantage, recent warm temperatures have produced mosquito larvae and a few adults are already taking aim! Popmama, like Dick, I too have found end of season sales at grocery stores. That is how I came to own my 'June' and 'Golden Tiara' - each under $7 late in the season back in 2009. I actually think I forgot to pick up what sent me to the store in the first place, lol....the hostas were at the outside entrance of the store and the first thing I saw! Too excited about the find and the price! Keep your eyes open, Popmama for you never know what you can find in grocery stores ;-).

Not patient either.. LOL, the best part of getting my order from Hallsons last year was wondering what bonus hosta he was going to include, I got Alex Summers.

Too embarassed to say how many new hostas I've bought in last two days.

Here's my favorite one, Blue Hawaii. This is a 2 gallon put and the leaves are about 10 inches high.(First try at posting pictures.)

I got Blue Hawaii this spring also! It isn't up quite as much as that, but has multiple eyes and is coming up nicely. I got mine bare root at the beginning of the potting season and put it right in the ground. It looks from your picture like it is going to be really good!

Alex Summers as a freebie would be awesome. Your Blue Hawaii looks like it has a ton of eyes. Did you get it mail order? If so, from whom?

Yes, Chris Alex Summers as a freebie was awesome! We bought Blue Hawaii from Romence Gardens in Portage, Michigan. It's about 60 miles from our home, we drove down on Saturday and came home with a car full. They had rows of hostas that they brought out of dormancy early for Michigan State University's School of Agriculture.
