Hi, I was wondering if anyone can give me some info on these fairly small, bright green caterpillars with white srripes down them. They are in the garden especially around the armenian cucumbers. What are they? Are they what's eating holes through otherwise healthy almost ripe cukes? what to do to stop 'em? They seem to have some sort of "web" like material around them sometimes too.

Could be hornworms...I just relocate any I get because they make such beautiful moths.

Not hornworms I think, I know those on my tomato plants. The little bright green caterpillars that seem to love all plants in the family with cucumbers but especially cucumber plants. I find the really tiny caterpillars in and under new leaves. They eat leaves and then they will eat into the cucumber fruits as well.

You might try bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), brand name products with it I think are Thuricide or Dipel dust. Pretty safe for people/pets/good bugs etc. Just bad for any caterpillar that eats some of it. They get a bad belly ach, quit eating and eventually die.

Sounds like it could be an owlet moth larva, also called a looper caterpillar. There are many kinds of loopers, though, and a photo would help.

I can't find the caterpillar in any of my books under Potato, Tomato, or Solanaceum/nightshade family, but then there are many generalist moths that will use most anything. If I have time, I'll thumb through my books, and maybe it'll be there. I assume you're in south Florida, southern California or south Texas, so it could be a tropical moth that my books wouldn't list. I Googled potato tree to find out about it, and the pictures of the flowers look like Carolina nightshade. I assume the flowers are much bigger than the Carolina nightshade, though? 'Looks like an interesting plant! Don't be surprised if you find tomato or tobacco hornworms on it! Sherry

Hey Ill Mannered....Thanks for the info/suggestion & the link, so I can basically just go get a pack of brown lunch bags & put them on the cukes & the pickleworms can't get to 'em? Good! One question, how early do I put the bags over the cukes, when they are really small w/ flowers still attached? And......do I staple them shut or jsut fold em up as best as can be? Thanks!

Marie, you're wonderful. It IS an American Painted Lady. Is this a cool caterpillar or what? http://lepidopteraresources.homestead.com/Vanessavirginiensis.html I think I'll move some of them carefully into the woods... I think a handful will be more than enough fun to watch in my one-gallon pot... I can't thank you enough, Marie! Now I can actually get some work done today. :)
