Fwang Tung Carambola flavor?
Comments (1)I've been eyeing this post for weeks now, and just have to say...do you really want to eat something called "Fwang Tung"? That sounds like gym socks mixed with belly button lint. Sorry, I know you said you like the flavor, and I'm sure it's nothing like that!...See MoreID Carambola
Comments (7)Yeah, I think Fwang Tung before Bell. My Bell's are green until they turn yellow. I've never seen a white fleshed Bell. I purchased a Fwang Tung years ago...turns out what I bought wasn't what it was advertised as. Below is a link showing some comparative fruits. In any case, it is quite a specimen of Fwang Tung....much larger than I have seen. Must have had extremely good growing culture and be one of a very few fruits on a decent sized tree. Comments (8)Brad, Looking good! In general I think that buiying fruit from the store is an injustice to your pallette. I nevere new how something like pineapple tasted until my parents brought back some golden pineapple from Hawaii. What a diffrence, I never knew how the fruit tasted until then. I know that some fruits are lacking flavor more then others(like carambola) It is too bad that us northerners only can buy thid variety. I also think that blood oranges ought from the store are a sad representatin of what the fruit really taste like. Not only do they sell them here for $1.25 a piece but unless you can get them at the right time, they are bitter and sour. I bought a dwarf moro tyoe for this reason. Ofcourse I have to say something about the mango. When I went to FL last summer I bought quite a few of these and WOW what a diffrence! The fruit was so juicy it was running down my arm! Well enjoy those fruit Brad, Congrats!! Andrew...See MoreCarambola first crop
Comments (10)Interesting....I have Bell, Kari, Sri Kembangan, Arkin, Thai Night, Hart, Possum Trot and a couple seedlings that are fruting. First, it has been my experience that the winter crops are sweeter than the summer ones. This discrepancy with what Jeff is commenting on may be as the result of some watering of flavor that my summer fruits experience as a result of constant rains and wet ground. With winter's usually drier weather my fruits may have a further concentration of flavor/sweetness. Or, Jeff could just be wrong (Lord knows I couldn't be). I have never had a Bell that I would call "disappointing or not sweet"....not at least as far as comparing them to other carambolas is concerned. I wonder if you really have a Bell tree. If you do, I wouldn't have a good explanation for your Bell fruit as you describe it. I have seen fruit improve with subsequent maturity, so its worth giving it another year to see if it straightens out its act. Harry...See Moresultry_jasmine_nights (Florida-9a-ish)
