Hmmmm....my lacunosa is in a northern window, so I would say it can take less light. Others I have in northern windows are linearis (1 of 2 - the other gets bright light), DS-70, lobbii.

Isn't that strange, Kelly? My lacunossa languishes if it doesn't get at least a couple of hours of bright sun, or very bright indirect sun. It was in a southern exposure window all winter and flowered profusely. With the overhang, it isn't getting any sun and is dwindling in its production. Maybe it's different varieties?

I keep my lacunosa in a northern window, too, and it does fine and flowers almost constantly. It's in a bright room - my sunroom, which has a lot of windows, so it gets lots of bright reflected light. Most of the ones I grow seem to do almost as well in the house as in the GH. I have a pubicalyx 'Pink Silver' in the GH, and one in my dining room, that doesn't get hardly a bit of sun in the winter months. The one in the GH grows a bit faster, but the leaves on the one in the DR are a lot "splashier."

An easy way to add more light during the winter is to use compact fluorescent bulbs, the ones marked as daylight. I use these bulbs to supplement light and they can be arranged using those clip on lamps to direct light where you need it. I have also started using LED light panels which are a mix of blue and red LED's. These panels are more expensive but they use almost no electricity and last for far longer than any other light system. Just a thought if this is something you might be interested in doing during the gloomy winter months.

Last year I got on small panel from ebay. I think to run this panel for 24/7 is about 1:oo a year.I used it above my H. compacta this last winter and it grow like crazy.

Thanks for the info, Mike. We finished our basement a few years ago and the only thing missing is... you guessed it!... a few plants. I'll have to try these with one of my Hoyas I have multiples of.

I am curious about these LED lights, perhaps you could answer a few questions..

How close to the plants do you have to put the lights?

I currently have a set up where most of my Hoyas are on a book case. Could I use just one light, or would I need a couple?

Hills it is hard to tell because I have only recently started using the LED lights. You can put the lights much closer without fear of heat stress but I am not sure the optimum distance to place from plants. I would imagine that one foot is about as far as you would want to go above the plants if this is the only source of light but in my case I have the panel suspended above trellised plants that are 4 or 5 feet from a southern window. The coloured light given off takes some getting used to but I only have the lights on during the day if it's not sunny.
With LED's it's all about the wattage, how much energy is used translates into how much light is given off. There are some very intense spot lights available but they are rather expensive and not what I need in any case. Currently the shelves I use for my Hoyas are about 5 feet long and plan on adding two panels per shelf but because it is sunny this time of year I have only put up one panel to boost the light farthest form the window. I purchased some white light panels to use as well but the red and blue are much better for plant growth and flowering.
