A few of our young ones - Several Pics

I hesitated to post my little scrawny hostas after seeing so many beautiful pictures of yours. I have known about hostas for years, but never realized that (1) there are so many different ones and (2) how addictive collecting them can be. Anyway we just started planting hostas in the fall of 2010, with most of them going in last year. I think we are only up to around 60 right now. They were coming really well and the freeze hit. Anyway, here are a few of our recently planted ones. We are working on a larger area so we can add more! I have learned a great deal form the forum..Thanks!

Blueberry Waffles - I have wanted this one since I saw a picture of it taken at the 2009 (I think) convention. This one has only been planted about 2 weeks.

Good pictures! Lucky you to find a source for houseplant begonias. The first two are rhizomtous so will not tolerate overwatering, but don't panic if they dry. If B. 'Escargot' is doing fine, congrats, as many people struggle with it. If you are going to overwinter it and 'Cowardly Lion;' they will need additional humidity, but that is just my opinion. The two Rexes are thin leaved and will not tolerate direct sun, they must have good humidity too, will probably be okay if grown closely with the others, the closer they all are the better humidity for all of them. Paradoxically, Rexes need strong light to hold that red color. I think you are doing fine.

Go to your nearest Home Depot or other big box and buy some Arizona's Best Fertilizer and apply some. It might be considered too late to fertilize but you are in Glendale and your walls should retain some heat in case of colder weather. Also, some iron chelate would be useful. Don't bother pruning, it isn't recommended for citrus unless you have dead or diseased branches. I think you are having leaf issues since the tree is devoting a lot of energy to fruit production. Citrus are very heavy feeders. Arizona's best isn't real expensive (considering you are renting) and is formulated for our soils. Hope this helps and greetings from Tucson! I overwinter my palms with X mas lights followed by a frost cloth and then a plastic garbage bin. The lights provide warmth and the frost cloth keeps the warmth in. The plastic garbage bin protects the palms from moisture and also protects them from wind and keeps more heat in. The protection takes only 5 minutes to put on and can easily be taken off on warm days. For me, it kept the palms about 17F to 23F warmer than the outside temperature which is cool enough to keep it from overheating, but more than warm enough to keep them from being too cold. I put the protection on below 25F and also put it on on cold days. I start to put the plastic garbage bin over it around this time of the year, but only when it rains. This keeps them dry for the winter. Good luck! Also since it sounds like your palms are still small, you dont have to use a garbage bin, you can just use an empty plastic pot, or large plastic container. -Alex

Thanks, everyone! I love sharing this stuff with you. Have you designed a project for a larger hooked rug yet? With your new frame how large of a rug can you create? One of my first hooked projects 20+ years ago was a small rug I designed. Then later I bought a pattern that appealed to me and hooked that. I think both still need to be bound and finished (procrastinating about this step is a problem common to many rug hookers). Currently, the two projects I have lined up are a chair seat (I have five but need one more) and a new cover for my footstool. My new frame (which should arrive in less than two weeks) is the same size as my old one, but both can accommodate any size project, as you just lift the rug up and move it to work on different sections. Here's a story for you: Last night I was trying to come up with a design idea for the hooked chair seat. I looked through one of my books on rug hooking, and got nowhere with that. Then I reached for a book on folk art, thinking as I did so that it had been years since I'd opened it. Inside the front cover I found cut-out patterns my daughter Jill and I had drawn for a quilted table runner I made years ago. I didn't use the horse she drew at the time, but there it was, a perfect size for the chair seat. I feel that I was guided to open that book. Here's a picture of the pattern I drew on the linen burlap last night. I'll do some sort of design in the outer border. Now all I have to do is pick which wools I'm going to use. It's like coloring. :-)

Gorgeous property with a nice easy slope toward the street, I think every thing you plant down there will be highly visible. What a display setup. That space looks custom made for hosta and conifers. Are you able to put in a few Japanese maple? Or is it too cold for those? Something that blooms in the spring before the trees leaf out would really show up.

Always nice to have another person showing their way of planting hosta. Never too many pics for me.

We do love pictures-the more the merrier! I need to do some weeding before I can post mine this year, but they are looking good. Yippee.

Gee,James,you sure have a lot of bare ground there! Lol! I wish I had that much available land,but unfornutely,I am on the side of a mountain,and too steep for many more hosta,but I still have some more room in my garden. Good luck with your future planting! Phil

Thanks everyone for your comments they are greatly appreciated. I am trying to be patient but I want them to be big now!! :)

Moccasin- We do have three Japanese maples in that area now a Crimson Queen, a full moon and a autumn moon they are pretty small as I had to get them mail order so they are hard to see, we also have out several hundred mixed narcissus bulbs out for early spring color.

I know what you mean about shopping I have orders in with Made in the Shade and Naylor. I am going to try to pace myself though (is that even possible) as this is going to be a long term project.

Welcome to the forum, James! Thanks for posting the pics. You have a wonderful site there with lots of potential. Hostas, ferns, companion plants, etc. And you've picked out some very nice hostas. That Bluberry Waffles is an awesome, puckered, large blue hosta...you're gonna like it! Give it plenty of room...
