I agree, there are too many beautiful older daylilies for me to enjoy collecting to really bother with the newer ones. I like also that they are tried & true, I can watch this forum to see which ones do really well for others. I did get a couple of rather newer ones because I do want to add a couple of the frillies. I just like large flowers, & love spiders. I don't have any that you just got, but I've admired Chevron Spider. I looked up your additions though, looks like you did good!

I love the older intros too. I'm happy with them, and don't often get bummed that I can't afford the newest intros. I've seen quite a few recent ones that I'd love to own, but I just can't bring myself to spent the $$$ on a single plant. I'll wait; the prices always come down after a few years. My oldies are thriving and lovely, so I have no complaints.

I have Mynelle's Starfish and like her very much. I am aquainted with some of the others but don't have them in my garden. looks as though you made some good choices.. I like some of the older ones but really like a lot of the newer ones. A mixture of both is good for me...Ellie

I find that I am at times surprised by how old a particular cultivar is.I have a few from the 80's that I thought were relatively new.I buy what I like,but find that most turn out to be older varieties.I intend to cross my older with newer to try to toughen them up.I find the newer ones a bit touchey when it comes to water,heat,and cold.

There isn't a daylily I don't like, but I'm in agreement with those of you who prefer to wait until prices become more affordable. Also, when mixing DLs with other perennials, I prefer to use solid colors, w/o too many intricate designs. But (there's always a but), I need to have a few frilly/fancy/eyes & edges/patterned blooms just to satisfy my craving for the "artsy" look.

I was quite happy growing mostly older varieties, until someone sent me a newer intro by mistake. Once I saw that frilly edge bloom in my garden, I changed my mind! Now I have a good mix of old and new.

I like the older ones too. Not with any reasoning for liking them it just so happened that I loved the color and when I found out it was from the 50's or 60's I thought well it must be a really good daylily to last that long.
I can't see spending $$$ on one plant either even if I was able to afford the high priced ones.
My goal in gardening is just to have one that is pretty, not costly. I look forward to when my new daylilies multiply and I can expand the beds even more.

That's what makes growing daylilies so interesting...something for everyone! I think we all start out with older ones...because we don't even know that they are 'old'! We just like them!

Then....it happens...either like Chris said...or maybe you get to see some 'newer' ones...and, off you go! I think the first one that made me realize daylilies had advanced beyond what I knew was Pearl Harbor. I wanted more!

If you haven't visited a daylily garden in full bloom before, it can be overwhelming! Any daylily can be stunning grown well and in a clump....old or new!

I'm like Ellie and Chris...gotta have them both, but am tending toward the newer...

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one that must feel the flowers on the daylilies. Guess you could say I pet them LOL.

I still can't see paying 2,000 to 3,000 dollars for x number of newbies but that's me.
Now if I was rich and did not have to watch how much I spend it might be another story.

I have a few older daylilies that I really enjoy. I'd like to add more. The one below is called RIBONETTE - 1951, extreme branching and a bud-builder (which makes for a very long bloom season).

I also have that one, but it doesn't bloom for very long. Since you say yours blooms for a long period, I think I will move mine, (which is presently in partial shade) to a sunnier spot.

Wow, I stay away from gw for one day and look at how many response to this post! I'm impressed.

Yes, Munson & Salter are among the prolific hybridizers on my "want" and "maybe want" lists.

I am quite sure that if I see a recent introduction IN my garden that I'll want more....that's just the way of DL...LOL

The other part of it is that so many of those catalog & internet pix are photoshopped, and I have such alkaline soil that I have no idea what colors will actually show up in my garden. They could all end up looking like the old orange/yellow varieties anyway...or worse yet, like mud....though I think even a mud colored DL would somehow be gorgeous. That's part of the reason I try to find some interesting UFOs and Spiders to mix in the lot...otherwise when they get into my garden they might all look the same...LOL

Now feeling the edges of my dl...I have not had a good ruffly one to try that yet...that could be enticing. But as far as senses go, scent will win me over in a second- hang the color or the form- if it smells good it's IN.

I love them all.. that is one of the symptoms of this sickness we call DAYLILY ADDICTION..lol. I find myself going in phases that have more to do with color and form than on age. Being currently in a pink and purple phase - I am drawn to any shade of pink or purple - eyed or not - ruffled or not..
I just won DANCE YOUR DREAM - Hartsell 2003- on the lily auction for Earthstar and had never heard of it before -- as you can see, it fits the defination of pink perfectly.

Oh, it is definitely a sickness!

I like both the old and the new... my problem is choosing from the multitudes available! My gardening budget won't allow me to buy all the ones I really like! There are just way too many choices!

Right now, the gardens hold several in red shades, a few yellows and oranges, and a pink or two... since I just recently became a "Daylily Addict", I can't name the ones I have without searching for the tags! I do know the last pink I acquired was "Halls Pink", which I think is just gorgeous!

Not only am I addicted to Daylilies, I'm also addicted to Hippeastrums, and I have a growing fondness for other types of Lilies, as well... I plan to spend some free time over winter making a wish list of Daylily varieties I'd like to add to the gardens next season...

I wish a lot of the newer varieties weren't so expensive! Some are just so eye catching and luscious that I can hardly say no to them, even with a big price tag attached! My gardening addictions are turning out to be expensive ones!

Did I mention that I'm also partially addicted to miniature roses?! I could go broke before spring ever gets here just placing a few orders for Daylilies and mini roses! How am I going to manage getting any of the other perennials I want to grow?!

Is there a Daylilys Anonymous Chapter anywhere?!

'Shishedo' is lovely. I hope it holds that pink color for you. Another older pink that is truly pink for me is 'Heart of Jade' (Kennedy, 1986). It's short, and early, but the flowers are quite large.
