Oldies but goodies - pics

Sometimes an oldie just knocks me over with its vigor and beauty - here are a couple I like:

'Breakaway,' a Reckamp variety from 1969. This plant is big and tough (scapes like tree trunks), and very showy.

'Big Show Off,' by Wild, 1989. It's wide - 6 1/2-7" - but not that tall (about 24"). I initially posted this as an unknown, I think, but I finally matched it to the names on my first order from Wilds. (I had three from that order that hadn't bloomed their first two years; this year they all bloomed, I searched a bit, and VOILA! Success! I matched all three).

'Dallas Star,' (Ferris, 1976), a better picture than my last one. It's loaded with buds this year, and quite vigorous. It should make a great clump when it's in full swing.

The oldies but goodies are actually my favorites. I'm just different from most collectors I guess. Your photos inspire me to capture mine on film. I don't have any of yours but I do have some that have scapes like tree trunks - Illini Jackpot for one.

This year I am learning to love the bright colors so Breakaway fills the bill for me.

Love Vertigo and Southern Dazzle! I never cared for spiders, but my eyes seem to be drawing to them more and more, especially purples, lavenders and pinks...and whites! Not so much oranges and yellows. Lovely, lovely daylilies! Karen

HELLO TO ALL! Many thanks for your enthusiastic responses! It is always a treat for the soul to have my rosey friends here sharing the beauty of roses I love so much....so for all of you, I will be posting more Austin pictures!! Because I only have June - September here in New Hampshire to enjoy my roses, it is all the more sweet...and as summer nears its end, soon all I will have are my pictures...that's why I take HUNDREDS! No, I don't have a huge garden or much land, but I do pack a LOT of rosebushes into my yard! I think I have over 130 bushes, and of course, that is always growing! Celeste

Rose Petals lists both the off patent DA's registration name as well as their trademarked name. see Abraham Darby, Rose Petals Nursery. I don't know if the owners of Rose Petals feel this way, but many in the nursery industry feel as I do. One should not trademark the names of off-patent plant. The reason is clear, it encourages people to make up their own names for plants causing the id of a plant to become a confused mess. The problem that Nursery companies would have in court with their trademarked rose names is they have become the common for the specific variety of plant. This voids the trademark. The name Troilus was never registered as a trademark, so even those that are exercising an abundance of caution should feel free to use that name. Most nurseries that sell Austin roses, do not propagate roses, this why I have trouble believing that Austin exercises any control over propagation of off-patent roses. (I could be wrong here, just be cause something doesn't make sense to me doesn't mean it isn't true). I think a more likely explanation is that if Austin does not support a rose with their advertising campaign, then it is less likely to sell, so nurseries are less likely to stock it.

Sue, most of mine are oldies. I don't have much of anything really new (i.e. under 10 years old), except for a couple nice bonuses from Marietta. I like the graceful form of many of the oldies. I've seen many newer unusual form daylilies that I like, but I won't spend what the newest ones cost. I can be patient, when the older ones are so beautiful. I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything. And, I can admire all the gorgeous flowers my friends on GW share.

Thanks, Betsy - I've been having a great time taking photos this year. My kids have gotten used to me going out into the yard in the early AM to get pictures of what's new.

Thanks for posting your oldies! I like oldies too. Most of my daylilies are from the 80's and 90's. This is one of my oldest (from 1970). I like it because it is a clear pink/lavender and has a graceful form.

Hi Laurel (by the way, very pretty name) I, too, like the oldies but goodies. Three years ago I really started to add DLs to the garden and last year I added a large bed. In order to fill it - to overflowing- I bought the older, least expensive DLs, too.(unless I went beyond what I meant to pay on the Lily Auction : ). Your DLs are very pretty. I have Dallas Star and it is just starting to bloom. So Lovely and Mary Todd are two very pretty yellows that I also have in the garden. If you like 'soft' colors here is one of my favorites that just bloomed this season. It was tagged as All The Magic, but Tinker's and mine do not look the same. It is a very soft yellow with prominent pink mid-ribs.

Since were are practically neighbors we should be able to grow the same varieties. I am always looking for those special oldies but goodies.

That's beautiful, Jane - really delicate and feminine. Very nice!

Here's one of my favorite oldies - 'Ida Miles.' It just keeps blooming and blooming, and sets pods like no tomorrow. It's not "perfect" in form, but it sure puts on a show.

Thanks for sharing all those oldies, girls!

One nice thing about the above cultivars, is that they are mostly one basic color, or a very soft blend of two colors, which I think are much easier to fit into a landscape or garden, than the fancier eyes & edges plants. (I like those too, but they're harder to fit in w/o clashing with something else near-by).
