USF gardens are probably the best plant place in Tampa, and one of my favorite hangouts. You've captured it well! and now i want to go check out Selby.
Thank you so much for your kind words. I definitely recommend Selby. You should go soon as most of the flowering plants were on the wane when I went. Also, I don't know what they are feeding those plants but they were supersized. I saw a dolar weed that was the size of my palm. Fortunately, there were little if any weeds at all. Have Fun!
Great photos, tufa! I have the pleasure of having Selby close by, but have never been to USF gardens. Really need to get up there. What great collections both places have for us to enjoy.
I looked up Selby thinking a road trip would be nice, but $17 admission is a bit steep. DH would have to take me, so that would be $34 and he doesn't even like to look at gardens.
I guess I'll just have to keep looking at your lovely pictures and dream. Thanks for posting them.
Abendwolke, The first one looks like Curcuma roscoeana "Pride of Burma".
Fairchild is $20 to get in the door, which I think is ludicrous. Used to go there quite often just for the plant sales. Haven't been now in a long time.
Excellent photo series.. But alas, I am in lust again. What is that flower in the very last pic? Certainly is a good looker and I wonder if it is fragrant?
Also, I am nuts about that caladium (I believe) in photo number 33. I spent years looking for caladium humboltii, or wrightii humbolti. The one in Tufa's photos looks very much like it, but with much more white. And maybe tinier... I'll post a pic of the one I have soon.
I just tried to find it onlline so I could post a link but did not find anything. I know the one I have can be had from Brent and Becky's Bulbs but I think they are not available till later in the year. I spent YEARS looking for it and only found it 3 years ago. Maybe that tiny white will arrive sooner....
The flower in the last picture is that of a cotton plant. It is the palest yellow and a most striking delicate bloom. It does have a fragrance but I would not necesarilly call it good. It smells a lot like a hibiscus to me.
You know they had some ground cover plants that I simply have never seen before including the caladium.
Katkin, if you have a membership to any other botanical garden, they will let you in for free. Thats how I was able to go. Even though the price is steep. I would still recommend that you make the trip, it will be well worth it.
The American Horticultural Society also offers free entrance with their recriprocol program. With the program, if you are a member of a participating garden, you get free entrance to other gardens...but not those within 90 miles of your "home" garden. With the AHS, since there is no home garden, you can go to any of the participating gardens and if you have a family membership, it includes your entire family :)
I think the Gesneriad Society has a Plant Show & Sale at Selby next weekend - Sat & Sun. They'll have sinningias, Kohleria, Chirita, Streptocarpus, Columnea, Episcia, and African violets - which I refer to as A - frician violet (My apoligies to Felix in advance!) 'cause everyone I bring home dies..... My plant shopping partner is into it big time. I'll probably make the trip down there next Sunday..........cheryl
September is the month for 2 for 1 admission at Selby, Ringling, Crowley, Mote, Spanish Point and a few others here in Manatee and Sarasota counties. It is for all Florida residents.
