I didn't have much luck with pots, I'm trying ground next.

I grew some over summer and were glorious but couldn't take the heat and rain .I grew Rudbeckia hirta. Understand that the "brown eyed susan is far more adapted ??
I always start seeds in pots lol have no luck at all with direct sowing. Of course my "soil" is sand with a few sea shells . gary

I started mine in a seed box...then to a 4" pot and then to the yard. After that they re-seeded themselves (not in the exact spot that I wanted them) and I had a great free show for several months.

Gary, you are right about "brown-eyed Susan," or Rudbeckia triloba. It's a native, reseeds happily, blooms non-stop, doesn't care how hot it gets, and is prettier every year. I have never had any luck with rudbeckia hirta in my gardens. Rudbeckia submentosa is one Nicki gave me to try this past year, and it did marvelously well. Now to see if it comes back next year.

Tommyplyer, are you looking for a low-growing plant? (I tend to think "low" when talking groundcovers.) Rudbeckia triloba is tallish...3 to 4 feet, and just as wide when in bloom. But I personally think it is the best one for Florida. At least in Zone 9. Once planted, you will always have them, and you will have enough volunteers to share with friends, too.

marcia that is georgous! WoW! I think that I need to make sure I get seeds from your daughter plants (in my backyard) into the front yard where my NOID susan's have been ruling...and dropping millions (really!) of seeds. The triloba are a studier variety than my NOIDs.

I'm with Tommy, I'll be at Biosphere too and while we are coming in my small pickup truck I sure would have room to take a few seeds back with me...I'd love to start some Brown-Eyed Susans.

I feel like the Johnny Appleseed of Rudbeckia...I've given this to so many people. And all of mine came from one tiny little seedling a friend found in his yard and gave me.
