That reference on Tinkers could be the spider ratio (petal length must be at least 4 times the width) ... a daylily needs to meet the ratio of at least 4 to 1 to be a real spider ... that could mean whatever spider you looked at measures 5 to 1.

I agree that there are so many that look alike but I remember several people posting about CRIMSON PIRATE. I know CP is sold widely at big box stores. However, you did say yours was evergreen and CP is a dormant.

I know a few times I've seen posts asking for IDs, & replies were sometimes that it is impossible to positively ID a daylily, just too many look-a-likes out there. This case is especially true. Box stores around here sold Autumn Red, Red Magic, Sammy Russell. I bought them all at the time, & can't tell any real difference in the flower, a bit different bloom time or height. Those are all dormants though, I believe. I've seen several others that look very similar also. I'm pretty sure yours isn't Crimson Pirate, mine is much darker.

Thanks, everyone. In person this flower is more like a deep rust than the red in the photos. My memory is pretty confident that it isn't red or anywhere near red. Sorry about the deceptive photos. I thought they were fairly representative until you started calling it red. And I guess it might not be impossible for a dormant DL to bloom here after the first year, but Stella D'Oro didn't.

BTW, to me it doesn't seem to have that 4:1 ratio that Pam mentioned, so would you call this a spider form? Is there a term for narrower, pointy petal form without ruffles?

The color doesn't match yours but the form and style remind me of DARK STAR, an oldie by Connell. It is evergreen. This color would look more reddish in direct sun, as this was taken early AM.

Here are the stats on the data base for comparison:

The bloom doesn't look like it would meet the sprider ratio requirements. I think I would call it the trumpet form. It looks a little like 'Ming Toy' to me, except it seems to be much better budded and branched than MT. Don't think it is 'Dark Star'. DS is pollen sterile and this one has lots of pollen. Don't know about 'Crimson Pirate', but it doesn't match the other three mentioned, imo.

Floota, I had seen Dark Star when I was searching. Mine has a slight white streak on the midrib but nowhere near that, and it seems much bigger than my flowers.

Ed, I will check out Ming Toy. And thanks for the new word - trumpet form. Mine really isn't a very large bloom - maybe 5" across at most.

I was thinking of Crimson Pirate too until I saw EV.

Ed, is that what you call trumpet shaped? I think of daylilies like Corky (see below) trumpet shaped.

To me, the shape of the daylily in the pics above is just a classic daylily shape (meaning old-fashioned shape, predecessor to the spider)

Well, I agree it's not a perfect trumpet, but I don't think the linked picture of 'Corky' is opened enough to be a good example of the trumpet form. When I think of trumpet, it is the classic lilium form, or the forms of H. middendoffii or fulva, while H. citrina and flava exhibit more of a star shape. I think Sherry's unknown is somewhere between the trumpet and spider forms, but I won't argue calling it classic. I don't think 'classic' is an AHS recognized term for daylily flower form, but I understand what you mean.

Today I have to move one of these NOID clumps because I'm running a path though the area. While I'm at it, I'm going to divide it in two. In fact, I have another one that can be divided as well. So I'll be spreading the cheer to other parts of the garden. Thanks for racking your brains for me. :)) It's such a pretty thing. I wish it a name.

I think Julia in NY wins the prize for naming my NOID. I received an email reminder from Ebay today about a daylily I had saved, and at the bottom of it were several other listings for plants. One had a photo of a daylily that looked just like mine! It was Crimson Pirate. So I googled images of it, and man! It is my daylily.

My only wonderment is its dormant habit. Mine not only comes back and blooms year after year, but it even keeps a few leaves all winter. Stella d'Oro never bloomed after the year I planted it. So I'm curious if others in Zone 9 have success with any dormants and if others in my zone grow this wonderful old daylily from 1955. Is it possible that the breeder did not know that its habit in a mild climate was more like a semi-evergreen?

I'm also curious about this breeder, H. E. Sass, according to Tinker's. Anyone grow any of his other cultivars?

You live in Florida. I live in Alabama...not the very same climate, but I have dormants that never became dormant this year, with the unusually warm winter we had. I have older dormants that do great here. Yours might just be doing that even if it is a dormant, maybe it is happy in the warmth.

Well, Kay, it makes me happy that it's happy - even if it's technically a dormant. I learned something from this that I didn't know - that dormants can be happy without cold. There are so many deeply colored daylilies that catch my eye, and invariably they are the dormant type. So the next time I see one I won't just give up hope for it. I'll ask everybody here if anyone in zone 9 grows it. Some of them are just gorgeous!!

Very interesting about your warm winter and how it has already effected your garden. I wonder what other surprises you'll have.
