High Tide's coming out party

What more appropriate day to throw a coming out party for High Tide than the morning after a record breaking rainfall here in Mobile. They say 11 inches, but the neighbor with a bucket rain gauge says her bucket has 13 inches in it, we are near the river and Mobile Bay, so get a good amount of rain.

But, now that High Tide is identified properly after 5 years growing as a NOID, he should meet some of his family. I hope you will add your High Tide pictures here.

To see his past, he came from Plant Delights Nursery in 2010 May, and was not something I ordered, so had no idea and kept trying to make him fit the order...so he was given the tentative name of Lederhosen, the only GREEN hosta I ordered. As time went by, more blue showed up with this hosta, and the name did not fit the plant. Now with the help of folks on the forum the High Tide name seems to fit like a glove. Just in time for me to present an almost mature hosta to the garden. Not an "ugly duckling" story, but more like "Man In The Iron Mask" misidentified and now restored to his proper estate.

High Tide is looking good! I'm glad you finally have a name for him. Isn't it funny how we label some plants as a boy and some as a girl? It just fits....
My hosta are still pips; even my Montana Aureomarginata is just now barely poking up. Its nice to see your pictures of leafed out hostas!

Are you keeping your feet dry down there, Mocc? Having grown up in Gulfport, I know how being at sea level and getting loads of rain can really swamp the place. My kids were sent home from school early today thanks to worsening street flooding in our area.

'High Tide,' indeed! I could really go for a 'Heat Wave' right now with a nice 'Summer Breeze' and plenty of 'Sun Power.' If this 'Storm Watch' goes on much longer, I'll have to learn to 'Waukon Water!'

Looks very nice! A bit of water and warm sunshine should really get it growing fast again. Im actually very jealous of the weather in Michigan lately! Today was a cold and cloudy day here because we had a "backdoor cold front" come in from the east which is basically keeping a constant cool ocean breeze in control here. Only got up to 52F today, but the clouds make it seem colder than that. Most of this past week has been in the 70s and tomorrow should be in the mid 60s and next week has lots of 70s again! Still keeping an eye out for the forecast, but if we can keep this weather up into april, then there is a good chance that we wont see any real cold again until next winter! -Alex

High School Graduation Party

My son graduated last year. Like the above poster, I did it the weekend after graduation. I used disposable plates, napkins, cups in the school colors and balloons to decorate. We had a crowd; well over 100 people. I did the picture collages and a video that played on a laptop going through his birth to graduation pictures and videos all set to music. It was wonderful. I also had some of his school work and artwork from the elementary grades, some of it was so funny! Lots of sports memorobilia too as he is an athlete. I made a lot of food! My son's requests were his favorite chicken pasta salad and a chocolate fountain; both were big hits. Since it was his party I wanted to include him in the menu too. We did not serve any alcohol but we did order a Root Beer keg from the liquor store. We put some prefilled cups with ice cream in a cooler so people could make floats but I think most just drank the Root Beer. We went through a 16 gallon keg in a little over 3 hours. It was outside on the deck because it gets sticky. Guest really loved it and I got a lot of good comments. I set up a volleyball net in the back yard. After the official hours of the party, the teenage guests stayed and played some very competitive volleyball for a couple hours and I served them leftover sandwiches, salads, fruit and punch. I suggest you designate someone with your camera to get pictures of your DD with guests, grandparents, aunts, uncles, special friends, etc... you'll be much too busy and you'll appreciate having the pictures later. Have fun and find someone to help you so you can take some time out of hostessing to enjoy your guests. Maryp

Thanks plllog and prill:) Confession time...My canisters are from TJ Maxx Home Goods! I snapped up these for myself and mocha colored ones for my mom. They are airtight with rubber seals, and the canister lifts off the metal base for easy cleaning. Not to get off topic, but I love TJ! I have found so many good steals there. They sell this same style canister through Horchow in a cream color for WAY too much money. About 5 months ago I bought 6 french black distressed dining chairs from TJ for $99 a piece...just received Horchow in the mail and my EXACT chairs are in there (saw them online too), plus a matching table and buffet stand. The chairs are $1,000 for a set of 2!!!!! I also bought a Ralph Lauren mahogany coffee table for a fraction of the retail cost. Makes you realize the mark-up on furniture and accessories.

I would add to Sophie's comment that a Parti is the initial attempt to organize a building to meet certain goals and it will inevitably evolve as the design process proceeds. But it is important to hold on to it as it changes because it is easy to become lost without a guide as you begin to consider the many elements of style. A "Cape Cod" house is a great example of the relationship of spacial organization, practicality, climate and decorative style. The original idea was to enclose space efficiently with little concern for decorative style. It placed the entrance, stairway and chimney in the center of a story and a half frame with a steep roof without dormers. There were variations in width (half, three quarters & full capes that involved different numbers of double-hung front windows) . They had no porches, porticos, or roof overhangs. This kind of house was so common in colonial times that it is now considered an architectural house style of the American Colonial period. It is a good example of how practical spacial organization and features and the absence of stylistic decoration can define a style. For me, after creating a working spacial organization or parti, the challenge is to carry the design forward as far as possible while looking for stylistic opportunities. Architects have their favorite stylistic ideas but from working with many clients they become fairly agile in identifying various opportunities. Anyway the idea is to avoid commitment to specific styles until you have had a chance to explore what ideas are well suited to your parti. Frankly, the only thing I will not consider is any massing that requires the use of long span roof trusses. I believe they lead designers into architectural traps often resulting in dwellings that look like the first phase of a condominium complex or shopping center.

Jadie, good one! All the names are right spot on.
Well, we did have 11 inches officially to break a record from the 1800s I think 1871, but in our neighborhood between the river and Mobile Bay, my neighborlady had 13 inches in her bucket. We were not as bad off as Pensacola, which got 20 inches (5.5 inches came down in 45 minutes), and my neighbor's friend in Pensy said she had 17 inches of rain in her 5 gallon bucket. So a wet day was had by all.

Jadie, it is headed your way, and if it meanders like it did the last few days, it won't be in a hurry to leave. We were fortunate not to have hail, but this morning water is standing in the lawn, mulch is washed all askew and I squish when I walk in the grass. But such a lovely sunshiny day with temp in the mid 70s. With all that rain coming down, all the dormant hosta came up....so look for the same thing to happen with your hosta. If they don't drown! I'm so glad I had a head start on repotting my older hosta out of the poorly draining pots. Now as soon as I can I'll get back to finish that job before they develop rot.

Just for the sake of following the trail and tying up loose ends, I visited Plant Delights Nursery website to check out their Lederhosen listing. Since they do not carry it now, they have an "information" sheet on it. The strange thing is, I think the picture they have up for Lederhosen is in fact that of High Tide or perhaps Sky Dancer which is more green than blue. It sure does not look like the pictures of Lederhosen on the Hosta Library.

I got curious about this because Babka said her Lederhosen never got such shiny leaves as the one I have. My Lederhosen has always "melted" to a flat dark green patent leather look in late summer. Most of the veins seem to disappear as well. Here it is in May 2012, 2 years after I got it, and now 2 years 2 years later than that.

The Lederhosen info picture at PDN looks exactly like the leaf and plant shape of High Tide or Sky Dancer.... So .....what the heck is going on with THAT!

I thought I'd drop this comment into the High Tide thread, but I'm not changing my mind about the plant I have being High Tide.

I'll be keeping an eye open for an alternate name for the LEDERHOSEN that I have, which is not the same as the HL pictures. It is not Leather Sheen either. Maybe it is a real Lederhosen responding to the much hotter/humid environment and longer growing season of zone 9a. I'll be sure to take a copious number of pictures this year.

Wouldn't it be funny if the "different" looking hostas I received in that initial order should have been picked out by a new employee of PDN from Tony Avent's hybridizing laboratory, not from the retail group? And I get strange one-of-a-kind hosta no one ever saw before? And me so totally clueless I had no idea what happened to my order.
Stranger things have happened in the real world.
