Murphy's Law

For years I didn't plant anything along this stone wall. It wasn't built correctly and subsequently is deteriorating and is falling down toward my yard. I kept hoping that the neighbors would do something about it since it is their driveway the wall is supporting.

But finally I decided I could die before anything was done, so I went ahead and built a bed along it. Here's a pic from a few years ago showing the wall. The bed is much larger now. There are mostly hosta planted in it. I was really looking forward to seeing their progress this year.

Yesterday, my new neighbor informed me, he is replacing the wall. I can't see how that can be done without major destruction to my side of the yard.

So, what to do with the hosta? He says they are hoping to do this work in June. I'm thinking I should attempt to pot up the hostas rather than risk having them all trampled.

I would welcome any words of advice.

yikes.. isnt there still snow in june??? ... lol

i would just pop them out when you know where they are.. and put them in a holding bed ... and move them back when the dudes are done ...

holding bed .... ??

in the veggie bed if you have one ...

get a yard of soil ... level it a bit.. and stick them in it for a month ..

the bed will be so much more carefree than a lot of pots..

though i dont think you told us how many we are talking about ...

jsut a couple.. pot in pots with potting media..

more than 10 ... ho9ldign bed ...

they move easily.. dont worry about it ... new wall should look great

PS: you could even wait until the day before.. dig them out.. put them in shade somewhere.. and just replant them a week or two later .. heck.. they are hosta .... you can even just leave them on the guys driveway during the project ....

Welcome!! Zone 1 Wow!

I would move them while they are just coming up as they are easier to manage then. You wouldn't have to move all, just the ones near the wall and maybe 3 ft. away. that should give the neighbor plenty of room to work and your whole bed would not be disturbed.

sammy, someone threw a firework rocket into our garden during the New Years eve and it landed into Le Vesuve pot, burning the poor rose a bit. :) And electric shepherd is effective to prevent dogs from pooping in your garden, as once they touch it, they do not come close to it again (as it zapps quite a bit if you touch it). It is not very pretty as a fencing/hedge, as it is just a wire to which current is connected, but it prevents animal trespassing. melissa, the burn is not too bad, just some spindly twigs, but she is still small and generally on the tender side for here, so I hope for that toughness. My garden is a mess too, especially the parts that did not get weeded in the autumn, so now I have renegade strawberries and what not else all over the place and don't know where to start even. My baby plants look good though, still hard to say if I had any success with grafting tree peonies, but fingers crossed. :) Spring is a nice thought though, hopefully it will be an early and warmer one this year. :)

Oh boy, you can tell a seamstress wrote that one. Come on, Guys, we can surely add a few more. When you find a bolt end you LOVE on sale at the fabric store, and it's one you buy and bring home, inevitably when you lay out your pattern on it, it's shy about two inches of what you need.

Over the years: stove quit on Thanksgiving with the turkey half done. Washer gave up the ghost the week before we moved and no laundromat around. Refrigerator quit while we were away for my husbands hip operation. It was in August and we had turned the A/C to 80 degr. Since I knew I could not leave the house after out return for a few days, I went grocery shopping before we left and had filled the freezer. Don't ask about the smell! Hot water pipe broke in an outside wall on Christmas Eve at 10:00PM. One burner on stove gave up when I had dinner for 10 people to cook. I am leary when holidays or special occasions roll around.

Well, gee Ken, I hope we don't have snow in June, but you never know. The last couple of springs have been downright miserable. We don't have any snow left right now, but the wind is howling and it feels wintry.

I was just checking my past records and it seems I never bothered to record when the hostas came up. But I imagine they will be just starting in June. I just want to disturb them as little as possible. While I'm really happy about the wall being fixed I'm not pleased with delaying the progress of my hostas. Our growing season is intense, but short. I hate to lose another year.

I think there are 9 hostas, a couple of other perennials and the rest are shrubs. They will have to work around the shrubs, but they are visible and easily replaced if need be. It's only the hosta I'm concerned with.
