What a year (so far)!

All I can say is WOW! My Hoyas are happy as clams, growing like mad, and oh my, some of the leaves I'm seeing on some species are massive!! I turned my 'Nong Nooch' the other day while cleaning and found a leaf that just about made me jump back it was so big! It was over 9" long, about twice the average size and 3" longer than the longest leaf. Callistrophylla is another that's putting on BIG leaves...

That biggest one you see in the center was from last year, but the new ones are coming in quite large, too. And it's decided to bud up...

Notice the newer buds already forming behind the older buds. Last year in May, I had a peduncle bud up but it aborted before they opened. I'm hoping they make it this time. I can't imagine the flowers being any more eye-catching than the plant, though.

We had some early warm weather this spring - maybe that's what got them going. But then we had quite a cold spell. But now we're in our third day of A/C weather - I heard we broke yesterday's record high for this date and we're likely to do it again today, in the mid-90's. I'll be glad when it cools back down, even though my Hoyas seem to love it!

Denise that leaf makes an already impressive plant even more appealing. Glad to hear you are having some nice sunny weather, we are flipping back and forth between sunny and cloudy/rainy still.

As is often the case, I'm in total accord with Anne. This is the best rose season I've had for as long as I can remember. As Sheri put it: "Forget the roses that fail here and find the ones that don't!!" The roses I grow, are loving the wetter, cooler summer we've had in the Northeast part of the continent. I've not watered once, not sprayed either and have no blackspot. Happy roses, seem to be healthy roses. I have been ruthless in shovel pruning non-performers for the past three years. Poor health, lack of vigour, failing to boom and they're gone. I replace them with roses that I've researched and believe might become good performers based on that research. Most of my roses are established. I have learned that roses in a cold climate take three to four years before they have the root system needed to perform at their peak after being pruned to near the ground each winter. I also have roses that are vigorous enough and healthy enough (in my conditions), so that they are growing and blooming exhuberantly in this cooler wetter summer. I now have a list of roses that impress me every single year, my failsafe roses, so to speak. For my climate and my conditions the fail safe roses are: Folksinger, Redoute, Lillian Austin, Prairie Sunrise, John Davis, Northern Encore, Lilian Gibson, Hawkeye Belle, Prairie Harvest and the Crocus Rose. All standouts, all peak performers year after year. This summer, possibly because of the apparently ideal growing conditions, and also perhaps because this is their third season, some others have also begun to stand out as well: Evelyn, Charles Darwin, Teasing Georgia and Abbe de Cluny are all, healthy, happy and booming exuberantly. They are also sprouting new growth and new canes and obviously planning to put on another major show soon. Some new varieties I have planted this year, based on much research and mulling are: Geoff Hamilton, Caramel Antique, Christopher Marlow and Antique Fairy Tale. Based on their first year results, health vigour and rebloom are all very impressive. We'll have to wait to see how they do after a Northeastern winter though. I already have five or six under achievers on the shovel prune list for next spring and have decided to trial some more of the Brownell roses, based on the results of the two I already grow, Break O' Day and Orange Ruffles. Thanks you all. Yes, Greenbean gave us years of laughs. He was a hoot. I really miss him and so does John and Morgan. She is really torn up still. I am just too used to him yacking all the time the quiet gets to me. Plenty busy at work trying to restore everything after the computer crashed and things not being compatible with windows 7 on the new one, oh joy. Ready to get away for a couple of days. Yes, Lucy I can take something to Kylie for you. We are leaving early Friday morning so I need to get it tomorrow probably. The lake we are going to isn't far from her house so we will go by there Sunday before we come home.

Hi Jeff and Jessa...Welcome to the land of citrus..LOL..It's a very addicting hobby but fantastic too..isn't it great when buds open and house is fragrant, plus fresh fruit sprouts? Living in the midwest, I know what you mean about winter..though we haven't gotten as much snow as you guys up east, we've had some icy days..and gray..The additional lights sure help. I'm a Harris and Briteleaf Nursery lover, so those are the only 2 places I buy trees..Don't worry if your tree isn't dwarf, believe me..growing in our parts of the world, well, we won't have to cut the ceiling to make room.. I don't recommend pruning..If a tree did manage to get ceiling height, I guess that'd be a different story, but don't think that'll happen. I dont think there's a way to shape a bush into a tree..Maybe if you removed all but one main trunk, but I'd be too scared to try it. I've only one bush-like dwarf citrus, a grapefruit given to me as a gift from CA. Otherwise all citrus are tree-shaped. Grafted trees have a line near the base of the main trunk. You can literally see where it was grafted..btw, any growth under that line is rootstock and should be removed. It'll grow fast, take nutrients from tree, and is very thorny. Field corn, yellow- Leaming corn, In this area it does better than Reid's Yellow Dent. It has big fat ears that mature sooner and dry down better. Field corn, white- Hickory King, It produced great despite one of the worst droughts we've ever had. I want to try Boone County White also. Sweet Corn- Golden Bantum, It grows like weeds and tastes good, not to sweet. It tastes like corn instead of like the nasty, super dooper, sugary ehanced hybrids. Beans- An unknown cranberry type I bought at the hardware store from a bulk bin four years ago. It produces very well and makes a good soup or snap bean. Yellow eye also does well here as a dry bean. Tomatos- Red Brandywine which I originaly got from Heirloom Seeds in Pennsylvania. It's the best tasting tomato I've ever had. Winter Squash- Walthum Butternut. It yeilds well, has good disease resistance, tastes good in pies. Summer Squash- Yellow Crookneck. It is easy to grow and tastes great. Potatoes- Anything from the grocery store that has a lot of sprouting eyes. Some people say don't plant those old potatoes from the grocery store but I've never had a problem with them. For some reason they just seem to grow as well as any seed potatoe sold at the hardware store. Peanuts- Raw Virginia jumbo peanuts sold at the grocery store as food. For seed it works just fine. Tobacco- Pennsylvania Seedleaf varieties also known as Pennsylvania Broadleaf which is better than any I've found for cigar filler, binder or wrapper. Virginia Gold, It's just one of the best for any type of filler. Any type of Burley filler, binder or wrapper. Pumpkins- New England pie pumkin. It produces well and is strong. It also tastes good. I want to try the Winter Luxury Pie variety though. I think it might taste even better but the New England Pie has done well for me. Okra- I had very good luck with a dwarf hybrid but you can't save seed. I think I will stick with the Clemson Spineless from now on as it also does well and I can save the seed.

Congrats Denise...its great when our hoyas grow and make us happy! That large leaf sounds amamzing!! That hoya has very striking leaves!

OK guys can you refresh my old memory on how to post a picture (from photo bucket), I seem to have forgotten, which is nothing new cause it was more that 10 minutes ago. I want to post a picture of my H. kast. You gotta love those leaves. It is a very slow grower, I got it last year and it has only 4 leaves but wait till you see them.

Denise,I love Callistrophylla for her leaves.I feel very lucky that I was given a small rooted cutting this past winter.I have had 2 leaves grow since having it.Having flowers is a bonus.

/Dee (in case no one's answered yet)

1. From your photobucket homepage, select the album your picture is in.
2. Move your mouse cursor over the picture you want to share. A window will pop open with a series of share options. What you want is "HTML code"
3. Click on the line of text to the right of "HTML code" and it will automatically be copied for you.
4. Click in the "Message" box at GardenWeb, and hit Ctrl+V and the code that was saved earlier will be pasted.
5. /hold for applause

Note: The default in Photobucket is to provide the code for the full size image. There is also an option where they will give you the code for a thumbnail sized image. (see my example below)

In order to easily access this code, you need to change your preferences as follows:

1. Click on the image you want to share.
2. Once the photo's window opens up, in the right hand corner you will see the same share options as appeared when you moved your cursor over it in my steps above.
3. In the upper right corner of this area, there is a small link that says "Share." Click on this.
4. When the inset window pops up, click on the tab that says "get the link code."
5. Check the box to the left of "Clickable thumbnail." Hit Save.
6. Now, the thumbnail code will also be presented in the steps above.

Additionally, when you are on the picture's page, if you hover over it, it will give you resizing options. Of course, this permanently changes the size of the picture stored on photobucket, which you may or may not care about.

Or, once you have the standard code, you can tinker manually with the display size settings. Obviously, you will want to keep the picture dimensions proportional, so this involves knowing your photograph's dimensions and doing a bit of math. For example, my photograph's true size is 1024x768, so if I wanted it to show up at half size, I would type: width="512" height="384" ... in the code right before the word "border". (see my example below)
