OT: Five Neat Garden Things I've Seen or Worked on Recently are:

As daylilies are pretty much winding down here (but starting in Australia) , I've been meandering trying to find things for my green thumb to mess with and found some surprises:

1. Two daylily seeds I planted 3 weeks ago are up!!! One is albino, though, so I guess that's actually only one. I wanted to see if late-planted seeds would survive winter here.

2. Moved Malaysian Monarch to a new spot with more sun, in hopes I would get a good clump like Kay's rather than only 3 blooms.

3. An angel's trumpet pod on a seed I planted behind some other plant and forgot was there. I can't tell if it's trying to bloom or has bloomed.

4. My missing waterlily-type autumn crocus I thought had died a year or so ago. All this time, it was buried beneath the leaves of a huge hot poker plant I divided this year.

6. Seedling hunting for seeds I fall sowed about a month ago. Exciting! I found a bunch of seedlings that I forgot what I scattered (nice, right?), and 2 baptisias :)

How exciting to find babies at this time of year! I hope they make it through the winter. :)

Still planting daylilies from pots. Also a few irises left to get in. Just got a lily order that was on backorder ( 38 bulbs, 12 different) along with about 20 tulip bulbs. And continuing the fall clean up. It is cooling off pretty fast around here now. Cloudy and windy today so I didn't do too much. Found space in the garage, trying to set up a wintering shelf system in the bathroom for irises (big bathroom with east window) and will dig the rest of the carrots this afternoon. :) Then I get to set up for Halloween!

Beginning to put tender plants in the greenhouse. Got some nice bands from Vintage that I will put in bigger pots (also in greenhouse. Still working in the roses, and waiting for all those tulip bulbs I ordered in the spring to get here.

Good morning! So fun to share my projects here, you gals all make me feel so good. Let me answer a couple of questions. These blocks are just various lengths cut from an old 2x4 board. The 2x4's work well because they stand easily and you can do a different design on the back--so two sets from one like these are. You could use any size wood really. 4x4 blocks can be decorated on all sides and flipped. (Nice with photos on each side.) You can also just decorate a length of wood instead of blocks. I use DH's "chop saw" so it is fast and easy to cut them. Then I take the electric sander to them because they are usually pretty rough. A quick coat of acrylic paint and let it dry. Then just cut pieces of scrapbook paper and Mod Podge it to the face of the block. Let me just add that I "could" just decorate them by painting--but using the papers is fun, easy, and faster. I've been cutting letters with my Cricut--but you can buy sheets of letters in all sizes and colors, stencil letters on, etc. Some of the things I added were dimensional "stickers" that I bought for the summer theme. A whole sheet of them on sale at Michael's for $1.49. I also use small silk flowers or layered ones cut from cardstock, ribbons or strips of contrasting paper, leaves cut out of cardstock, buttons, rick rack, etc. That's the fun part and a great way to use up scraps of things since it only takes small pieces. The Mod Podge is great, goes on cloudy but dries clear and fast! Later I will try cutting some vinyl letters, but it is more pricey, so doing the paper letters is good while I'm learning. You can also use thin boards for signs to hang on the wall, and I've seen some "stacked" blocks and boards that are so cute too. Lots of this stuff being created on some of the blogs I've found on the Cricut message boards. And Grandma Bonnie on the Crafts forum here on GW does the vinyl designs for walls and even cars! Once I invest in some vinyl, I'll be able to adhere words and designs to plates, jars, the refrigerator, etc. Really any flat clean surface! (The vinyl can be damp wiped and easily removed--the Mod Podged paper would be difficult to remove.) It does take "time", mostly because I try this and then try that before I decide what to glue where! But it is one of the easiest crafts I've done and just so many possibilities! I've seen some words or names on the glass in a frame and would like to try that too. I've been collecting and saving ideas for things to make, Karen has sent me some good links to blogs and things that she has run across during her nighttime "surfing". (thanks Karen, love it!) OA, the painted sign can certainly be painted on both sides. I often do that if I plan to use it where only one side can be seen. Doesn't work so well if you plan to display it on an easel on the table for instance, so keep that in mind. Hope I've explained things well--if not, just ask--or email me if you'd like. Did anyone see the episode a few years ago in California's wine country? This spoiled, dry, unsmiling couple toured three gorgeous homes, large homes that anyone would consider to be dream homes. The man walked into one of the kitchens, a huge affair with cherry cabinets, granite counters, stainless, etc., and pronounced it very low end. My DH and I were incredulous. If that was low end, what does he consider high end? Titanium appliances? Gold-plated fixtures? Diamond-encrusted cabinets? Sheesh! Also, I don't understand why people need these huge homes. 5000 sq. ft. might seem impressive, but don't you get lost in that? How do you keep it clean? How do you afford the maintenance. Repainting and reroofing a 50000 sq. ft. home is going to be much more costly than a 1500 sq. ft job. Do you really need a separate exercise room, a separate wine room, a separate play room, a separate theater? Don't even get me started on the spoiled 20-somethings who are buying their first home for $500,000 OR MORE and sneer that a perfectly serviceable kitchen or bathroom is a "gut job." My favorite HHI was the one in Slovenia where bees had built a hive in the house (or was it bats?) also the one in Buckinghamshire, England, with the thatched roof.

A guy I knew in high school - a normal, honor roll, good kid - said he went to Woodstock with his older brother. I'm pretty sure he was telling the truth. Woodstock was 1969, so this guy had to have been about 14. My DS is now 14. I have to ask myself two(rhetorical)questions: how cool is it that he was at Woodstock, and what were his parents thinking? Although melaska and linelle seeing the Beatles, that may beat out even Woodstock! And less muddy. Oh, and DS explained to me that Jethro Tull isn't "hard rock" it's "classic rock." I explained to her that they weren't "classic" yet when I saw them. Reminded me of the line from the hilarious song "1985," "When did Moltey Crue become classic rock?" which segue allows me to go sort of back on topic. Debby just hit the wall She never had it all She wanted stainless steel Just couldn't make the deal She wanted Shaker doors And Brazilian cherry floors 1200 cfm fan What happened to her plan? She was gonna get some marble, Backsplash of subway tile, She was gonna put in drawers, Pull outs with lots of style. A cool front has passed through southern WI and is headed to the east coast. Relief is on the way. Behind the front, day temps are 70s to low 80 with drier air: Dew point 60 F. No wind to speak of so can not tarry outside because of misquitos - have to keep moving or get eaten. We've had our share of rain the past 3 days. The problem was the rain clouds were strung over 200 miles and were aligned with the direction of travel. The rain front was not exceptionaly wide. The result was 200 miles of rain clouds passed over the same spot. Menomonee Falls and Milwaukee, WI got flooded. Nicolet High School in Glendale, WI got flooded: 6 to 8 ft or water in the basement and 1.5 ft of water running down the halls on hte first floor. The gym floor went under. They had just gotten in new sports gear for the fall term and it was stored in the basement. Official's preliminary estimate is $1 million to clean and repair. They think that if crews start now and work 7 days a week, the school may be in shape in time to open for the fall term. And of course by now, you have heard about the Cadillac Escalade swallowed by a sink hole. The vehicle pulled up to a stop light, the street caved in dropping the vehicle into a 15 ft deep hole and to add insult, the stop light also fell and leaned on the car. Its going ot be interesting to see how the insurance companies react to this one. I can hear it now: This was flood damage and your policy does not cover flood. The real sob story goes to a the owners of 5 to 7 homes on the north side of Milwaukee. Their basements caved in; the city condemed the properties as uninhabitible and has ordered immediate demolition. One woman lamented: "I bought this house not long ago for $120,000 and have 20 more years of mortage left. I'm loosing my house this week, but the mortage lives on." She'll get nothing from her home owner's insurance because it is flood damage, and most homes in that area do not carry flood damage because they were not in a flood plain and up to now, it was not needed. A number of cars parked in underground garages were flooded. If the water level got up to the relay box under the hood or the fuse panel under the dash, these will be totaled by the insurance firms. Yes sireee, the is the second time in 15 years that we got a 100 years rain.

Kay, your rose pics under cottage garden look really exciting! I love. Spaces where you're partially enclosed by upward -climbing flowers.
honalee, I didn't realize you had to bring irises in for the winter. How many more daylilies did you get in the ground?

I'm so tempted by some unique seeds I see on auction, but don't think we'll be here 3 growing seasons, so really trying go hold off on things that won't bloom right away. :(

I just consider tulips to be annuals here...I have heard you can dig them up, but I just plant some each fall.

What is happening here is:
We've finished one of the two trellises that we are putting up for the clematis. Still working on the other one. Getting better at routering and not breaking the bits LOL.

Still taking out dead scapes. Amazing how many just aren't ready to come out easily. Found scapes on LESLIE RENEE and RASPBERRY BANANA CHEESECAKE. They are not giving up here.

Bearded Iris are also blooming. Odd since they didn't bloom in the springtime. This pic was taken on October 11th and they are still blooming. Found about 10 stalks in the garden.

Still having to mow the lawn when the weather cooperates.

Vegetable garden still has to be cleaned up.

Nearly 90% finished with two new planting areas. Still need to put mulch on top and just let them sit till next spring.

Waiting for the cannas to die back so I can dig them out and store them for the winter.

Weekend is suppose to be sunny, so I guess we will be back out working outside for the next couple of days till the rains come again.

CTC ~ I don't bring irises in for the winter but I do pot up the new ones and overwinter them in the house if they arrive late in the fall. I like to give them time to develop a good root system before I plant them out. The ones I have been planting out now are ones that are in pots already and have established roots.

I also got about 15 more DLs in the ground from the pots. I'll list them as soon as I make up the winter tags. The lilies that just arrived are asiatics and they will go in the ground this weekend providing the weather cooperates. Hopefully I won't have to winter them inside too! It will be pretty cozy in here as it is....:)

Nate, no I'm actually afraid I might have to move somewhere sans dirt (or containers or plants) once the baby outgrows her corner of the room. I've recently nicknamed my apt. "The Salty Sardine" Really fun/full of spice, but seriously getting crowded ;)
I have liked the challenge of growing stuff in an unlikely space :) Sometimes a garden where no one else is growing one is even more special. Then again, real dirt *daydreams*
Julia, I love the trellis!! That's exciting. I put a Montana Mayleen clematis on a small one and was mindboggled at how that thing is dangling off and climbing over the side of the apt. building like "What IS this thing??? A REAL trellis, please and thank you"

Julia, that is a beautiful trellis! I really like it. That's what I need next ro my shed for Mrs B R. Cant to climb.
