Managed a Couple Hours of WorkYesterday

I need to be in the yard, and have been unable to do much...It's not fun to be restricted as I know some of you (ngraham and Julia) are aware.

Anyway, I SPed four more daylilies and planted four...although one of the planted ones replaced Wren Song which I had dug and potted up a few days ago. I decided to plant only one, Shelby, in the place of American Windmill and Helix.

I also planted the remaining five new ones in posts to gain a little breathing room. I have several more to dig, and another planting area where Bradford pears have been cut down to use for daylilies, so the remaining ten should have homes eventually. all summer, I would pot any that I had bought as they came in, but now it is time to plant...and I will be at the doctors once again tomorrow. Maybe after that we will have a definitive diagnosis and I can improve significantly.

After all, my garden is calling me.

Sounds like you've been busy! I've been trying to finish up going through my seedling daylilies, a few that I plan to keep, some that I am moving to think about next year, & some I am composting. Found a daylily yesterday I definitely need to do something about. Yarrow has completely overtaken Motown Blues. I walked by & suddenly realized it wasn't there. I looked down through the yarrow & there it was. Got to dig that out as soon as it stops raining long enough. Surprisingly, it looks pretty healthyBeen raining here all day, not hard, but enough to keep me inside. I've been itching to get outside.
I sure hope you get the treatment you need & get better fast! It is so hard to not be able to do the things you want to do.

I'm still taking out dead scapes and finished the front beds today...well almost, but many are still not ready to come out. I have about 10 pots that were suppose to be planted but now I have to find a way to over winter them.
Rain is on the way for Friday,Saturday,Sunday, and Monday on and off or so says our weatherman.

I still have to finish taking dead scapes out, cut back the perennials, pull out those pesky Queen Annes Lace and some other blooming weeds.

Yes, I know the feeling of being limited to what you can and can't do but I'm getting a bit tired of listening to the experts.

Tym, As Pirate Girl said, you're too concerned about watering these. They'll be fine. They are drawing resources from their lower leaves in order to live, but this takes months. As the resources are depleted, the lower leaves dry up. You can remove or not. This is a natural process, especially when they're in growth - as new growth appears, old growth dies. As you note, until there are roots there is no reason to water them. The only condition where you would is one you can't supply right now - lots of sun and warmth, a broad expanse of sidewalk or a heating mat, and the plant sitting in pure pumice in a pot that will warm easily. Until you have those conditions when an Aloe is rootless, watering is fruitless - or rather it's worse than fruitless, because it will kill the plant. Just be kickin' it with the Aloe - stand it up in a nice sturdy vase/container (a 155mm shell casing works great), or leave it potted in dry soil, and spritz as needed. It will be fine until growing time. I hope this has convinced you, because frankly I'm out of words.

Jen, I don't worry much about wood chips when I've used them as mulch on my permanent paths. Ultimately, they get moved into the planting beds but not before they've lain in the paths for a few years. The concern over these carbonous mulches like wood chips is that they will tie up the available nitrogen in the soil and plants will go without. I have seen the problem of high carbon/nitrogen ratio material incorporated into the soil with too much abandon. The problem can be overcome with liberal application of nitrogen but it is generally best to build soil carefully if that's what you are up to. My thinking is that I don't want mulch IN the soil; I want it on TOP of the soil - preserving soil moisture and suppressing weeds. There's a link below on material you can use as mulch. My personal favorite is pine needles. It has a fairly high nitrogen content. I never can move enuf of the material to make it go very far - most of it ends up in the perennial flower paths and beds. My soil is naturally on the alkaline side and pine needles work well both as a mulch and as a compost ingredient. Bugs, yeah, they like to hang out under the mulch. Earwigs and slugs make use of it but your plants can also benefit, there are the risk/benefits which should be weighed. If you are having trouble staying ahead of the weeds, definitely, it makes sense to make use of a good, organic mulch. Oh, and boards . . . you'd have the same problem (and maybe more so) with the pests. I'd think they'd be a little awkward to walk on after awhile what with getting wet, dirty, and growing moss and such but I don't have any experience with boards used like this. I'm pretty sure she knows that it's way too loud. She doesn't actually believe the maintenance guy is racist, if she does then she needs her head examined. I think she's stalling because she doesn't want to kick out paying tenants. I've actually tried to arrange something with the manager, because my neighbors usually start up around 6:30pm, half-an-hour after the office closes and all-day on Sundays when the office isn't open at all. The problem is, the office is usually closed by the time I get home from work. Tuesdays are the only days I'm home before 6pm and I think they've caught onto my pattern because she's always busy now when I show up and she's off on Saturdays. I've left messages with her assistants but she's totally dodging me. I sent an email to the regional manager last night, I don't have their phone number and can't find it for the life of me. It'll probably be a week or so before I hear anything back. As for my neighbors, they're friends with the people who live next door to them. The guy who lives above them is deaf (I'm not joking he's actually deaf). The woman who lives directly across from them works evenings and doesn't get home until midnight, but she actually told me that she can sometimes hear their television in her living room during the day, but she doesn't want to get involved. I think I can work on her and she might be willing to talk to the manager, if I can ever get a hold of her, but I still don't think my manager will do anything. If the regional manager won't get involved, can I break my lease without shelling out the subsequent fine?

Sounds like I had better find a tarp! My soil is clay. My parents had sand. What a difference! I think pulling off the pot (and reburying) would give the hosta a better chance of winter survival. The only thing is I cannot be sure that those hostas I heeled in are virus free. I have seen what I believe to be hosta virus in six different garden centers near me. Since I have only had these hostas for one or two years, I am afraid of having broken roots possibly contaminating my soil. So I am just going to have to find a tarp and put it on for a period of time. Container growing can be a lot of work! And mother nature is not making things easy!

well Kay, you and Nancy are doing more then I am able to do.I been trying hard to pull some weeds out and digging up my dormants and potting them up. Dormants just don't do good here.I have lost a few I had. They go dormant in the winter and never come back, but the ones in pots, come back and grow and bloom really nice.So far,I am averaging to dig up one dayliily a day and potting it,and pull just a few weeds as I go too. but, One is better then none at all.so far since I have started, I have 8 or 9 dug and potted, forgot which.but think its 8.I have bad arthuritis in my back, back of neck and shoulders, bad.cant take arthuritis pills as I am allergic to all I have been put on,and the dr tells me don't take no more.everything seems to have gotten worse when I fell back in November and broke my right wrist. hospital sent me to a different dr for this one and he done nothing, kept telling me its healing fine. well now, its a little deformed,and hurts dailiy,and cant use it like I want, I use it, but not for everything like I use to, its the right wrist and I am right handed, so it is not a good thing, for me.but, I do the best that I can with what I have.We did get a little rain this week that has softened the ground to make it a little easier to dig.Kay, I do hope you get a good report and the dr. can help you, to get back to the thing we love.
