Forget the Sluggo, get the shotgun!

Ah, spring is here, time for some mulching, grass-mowing and-Hey, did you hear that? Sounds like-where's Fido?? Here boy! Aaaaaargh!!

This thing could decimate a mature 'Guacamole' all by itself! Good thing they live in Africa (Although they just found this type in Australia)...I know snails aren't dangerous, but it still kinda gives me the heebie-jeebies!

jean & dan While where slugs hang out in a lasagna garden is interesting, I don't have a lasagna garden and don't plan to continue my beds using that method. I didn't ask about a lasagna bed in the opening post, just whether Sluggo would kill earthworms, but it got added into the stew anyway. As I've done for years, my irrigation system is laid on top of the compost existing from the prior year and the cardboard is placed on top of that. Leaves are placed on top of the cardboard for aesthetic reasons, eventually to become compost, and to keep the cardboard damp and attractive to earthworms. Unless it's right after rain, the leaves stay pretty dry on top, and I've never seen a slug on the upper leaves, just under the cardboard and eventually at the boundary of the cardboard and the leaves. For those of you who answered the question about whether Sluggo kills earthworms, thanks. That's what I wanted to know.

Bird dogs are notorious for being able to scent rattlesnakes. I grew up in a bird hunting family, dove, quail and turkeys and I can tell you there's nothing more sickening than having a bird dog on point when quail hunting, and NOT flushing any quail...then you SLOWLY start looking for the rattlesnake, and hope you don't get snakebit. Fortunately for us none of us did suffer but we did kill some really BIG rattlesnakes back then. Not much of an issue here in the burbs now, but being on a brackish lake I do get those d**n moccasins and I do remember the time I almost lost a good bird dog to a moccasin strike to the head, unfortunately they don't scent these snakes. It was a really dry year and the moccasins were coming out of the cypress swamps searching for any water to survive.... Tom

I have been dealing with raccoon problems in my backyard and swimming pool recently. After a lot of online research, I cam across a few posts which got my attention. page. On one particular page, several people were discussing the merits of keeping raccoons as pets. I thought this was kind of bizarre, considering the experiences I have had with these creatures. Some people just don't realize that raccoons are wild animals. They belong in the Wild. And when they are living these apart from humans, they are great creatures. However, they are clearly not pets. Also, raccoons carry rabies. Problems develop when people live in urban inhabited by raccoons. In these instances, there is potential for a lot of problems. Raccoons regularly invade backyards looking for food, shelter, etc. Raccoons search garbage cans and dig up lawns looking for grubs. Grubs are these insects which live under your lawn and eat your grass. Raccoons feed on grubs and other insects. Raccoons also love swimming pools. They drink the water from pools.They also like to swim in the pools and play water games, just like humans. I was reading about this guy who had a problem with raccoons in his yard and pool. The raccoons were taking a crap in his pool almost every night. (They are nocturnal creatures. If you encounter them in the day, stay far away, they could have rabies.) These raccoons were using this pool as a toilet. I have seen others who were having this same problem as well. I found this particular post quite interesting. I agree with the majority, the little beasties are a true pest! I always thought they were the workhorse of nature and that their good out-weighed the bad but no more! I have great soil and mulch with different kinds of things, pine needles, bark mulch and straw from my chickens. They have multiplied into the thousands. The last 2 years they have eaten off the sprouts of my Angel Trumpets so bad that they have failed to bloom for the last two years. They are in the dead stems from the previous years growth. I can't eliminate them unless I dig up the plant and cut away those stems. It is not happening because the clumps are very large and I worked hard to get them established. They are also in the hostas and in my tomatoes. They get in every house plant that I put out over the summer and I have to repot everything every year or lose them over the winter because the little turds eat the roots and leaves of my house plants. I am ready to use whatever I have to do to eliminate them. I have plenty of birds and toads, frogs and parasitic bugs in my garden, I encourage spiders and all other good bugs and even my chickens will not eat them. I tried and suffered the damage from my chickens in the hopes that they would eliminate the little buggers. Spinosad is a natural organic method of killing pests the same as Bt has been used to eliminate cabbage worms. It is also the ingredient in Comfortis that I give my dogs for flea control. I will try the beer but if it dosen't work I am going to bring out the big guns!!!

I don't mind SEEING it, just keep it away from my garden! At least the shell is pretty, better than an ugly all over slug.

I cringe at the photo! Argggggggggghhhhhhhhh. I get uncomfortable even seeing cement or wire-style snails. Out here they cause so much damage. That jewel would require a sledge hammer for sure.

Babka, that's the funniest thing I've ever heard! I almost hurt myself laughing....AND it's a very practical way to eliminate a major threat to our Hostas, were we ever to have giant snails invading our gardens :)

Don R; do you keep them in terrariums (I'm not sure I spelled that right)? Where do you get them, not that I am ready to change my African cichlid (Lake Tanganyika) tanks over to giant African snails and slugs. Just curious.

Oh, I don't own these, Les. A friend told me about the 'Giant Ghanan Land Snail' so I looked it up, not quite believing him that they were THAT big. Ken pretty much summed it up with his comment about me having spring fever so bad, that I was looking up pictures I can associate with warm weather.

I love aquariums, and have a 150 Gallon; Cichlids are great, this is the closest thing I have to an African Cichlid. The stately Angelfish. Most of my fish are Amazon River/Basin natives, with the exception of my Clown Loaches. No way fish should get the boot for land mollusks, even interesting ones.

Oh man, that cousin gives me the creeps but I really like the slug-hunter with the sledge hammer.

Don B, I'm not going to bore you with telling you my age. I had a breeding pair of Blue Acara whenI was only 10 years old, and after breeding Jack Dempseys, Firemouths, Convicts, and the common Central and South American fare at the time, gravitated to the Lake Malawi cichlids when they'd become available in the hobby in the 1960's. Breeding them financed my building my fish room to 18 tanks. But my largest held a pair of Red Oscars who were more pet than fish. They loved to rub against my hand when I put it in their tank. Oscars are the smartes cichlids I have ever owned from either hemisphere.

I do the gentle approach, have 3 1/2 bottles (each 3 lbs) of Bug-Geta waiting for them. They will leave some slimy trails.
