Neat. I hadn't even thought of planting two in the same hole. I was thinking one of the downsides of two SFs is that you'd have to make room for more plants.

I consider them to be pretty much the same thing. I always plant two singles in one hole. It depends on the cultivar whether two together will multiply faster than two separate fans.

As a seller, when possible I try to send fans that are together. BUT they don't always divide and lift that way. But I almost always send more than 2 fans anyway.

I've always been operating under the assumption that two fans together give you more blooms than 2 SF, but I have no idea why. Lol

I could be wrong on this one, so don't throw sticks please. But I believe in a northern environment a double fan is much better. In my experience from my garden the double fan recovers much faster and has a better chance of surviving the winter. I always try to buy double fans where possible, especially when I am buying a southern introduction. Mike.

Mike, I'ma also in Canada and I had to plant a single fan when I was planting a new batch of daylilies and didn't notice that the dog lay down on one so I missed it. When she got up I noticed it and planted it. The single fan plant did just as well as the double fan plant, same daylily. I think it all depends on the cultivar you are working with. I personally don't care if it's 2 joined fans or 2 single fans ... I plant the 2 single fans together in one hole just like the joined fans. I dislike single fans, and try not to purchase single fans.

Like floota, some daylilies fall apart when you divide them if you aren't lining them out ... which I don't do. And you won't get 2 joined fans.

I've gotten double fan and 2 single fans and it really depends on the cultivar how quickly it will recover along with your own garden growing conditions.

It has been my experience in our southeast Texas garden that double fans thrive better than single fans. I've lost quite a few new and pricey single-fan daylilies this year, as they did not seem to have the stored-up energy to survive this most horrendous record-breaking summer here.

I really am not interested in buying any more single fans, unless it's a cultivar I just can't live without, no matter what. I've also noticed that double fans attract more bids than singles at the Lily Auction.

Yes, some really do go ahead and take off growing, but for the most part, double fans (growing together) do best. It's been my observation, for whatever little it is worth, that daylilies seem to be at their best when they have a little competition.

I've noticed that among the 2,000 seedlings I have growing in styrofoam cups this fall, if there is just one seedling in the cup, it does not grow nearly as vigorous as those with 3 or more in the same cup.

I also suspect that field-grown daylilies grow better when transplanted than those that are grown in a protected environment (i.e. greenhouse). I think our hot, dry summers may be just too big of a shock for them.

It may not make a difference if you live in a better climate.

I prefer double fans and they seem to have better survival rates than singles do here. I don't buy singles unless really necessary. You can be fairly sure that double fans have bloomed already, unlike singles. But it is true that some daylilies have loosely attached fans that fall apart when dug.
