The goings on with Featherhoof and Waterman in mid September

I spent all morning fertilizing, pulling weeds,

and thinning out seedlings. Everything seems to

be going well except the corn. I think I have a

fall armyworm problem. I WILL master this corn

thing. I have never had somthing give me so much trouble. Every few days, I sprayed with 'tripple plus'(has neem in it). That did nothing, so I tried

sevin dust 10%. I won't give up. I want to grow

corn. Can you tell I'm frustrated? Other than that

little blip, everything is going according to plan.

I found a new spot for pineapple tops

My dorset apple is finally coming around and putting on new growth.

My baldwin pear is putting on new growth,too.

The asian akama mame beans make flowers like crazy, but no beans.

Oh, before I started my yard adventure today, I plucked off a beautyberry leaf and rubbed it all over myself. It realy does keep the bugs off.

nice... your bassicas look great. i think you have your mum beat.

bill grew those same beans and had exactly the same results... pretty, but no beans. i think they need cooler weather.

my corn experiments have been so humiliating... if you figure it out, teach me! in zellwood (long and scott) they aerial spray their corn multiple times DAILY! and people wonder why fish die en masse?

those apples grow VERY QUICKLY once they start... my anna has grown an amazing amount in the past couple of months.

Nope. It's a turnip.

Here is the bright red Oriental turnip that has become so hard to find! It produces small, tender globe-shaped roots that look so stunning in their red color; the stems are also red. Maui, Zeedman has been a great help and is a wonderful resource to have here. The sites he gave me were Bakers Seeds and ECHO, though neither list them as Hunan. ECHO lists theirs as "day neutral", is where he buys his and will be my source from here on. I've tried winged beans from Evergreen with little germination success, some others from family in the western Pacific with marginal results and this latest batch from Kuala Lumpur which has had good germination rates. I also seem to have misplaced a package of Goa Winged beans from Katazawa Seeds but if they turn up soon I'll give them a late start just to note differences. ECHO mentioned this article about the "hunan" bean http://www.motherearthnews.com/Real-Food/2007-06-01/Hunan-Winged-Bean.aspx My problems are mostly self inflicted so I have a lot of study to do to get up to speed.....and make some sort of germinator to get control of the heat.

Evelyn, Marcia is correct. The U-shaped dive display is for both the rival male and the prospective mate. There is also a shuttle display that takes place directly in front of a perched female consisting of rapid horizontal arcs with the gorget feathers erected. This may be done for a female hidden in dense vegetation and she may even on a nest if you can't see her. If it's the "females" trying to feed off the red leaves, they may be young birds recently fledged. Females and first year birds look basically the same. Young birds are very curious and will check anything red or flower-like while they discover food sources. This is one reason why fall migrating birds often ignore feeders. If they were raised in an area without feeders, they never learned that the feeders may be food. Eventually with time, they will get around to trying it. As migrants, they come and go so quickly that it's very likely that they will not get around to trying the feeder. Quite often, even in the winter, birds will be happy with the flowers and won't get around to trying the feeders until their food source is lost to a freeze or increased numbers of birds causes an increase in competition for food. Increased competition results in the need for a quick fill and the feeder serves that purpose. Once they discover the feeder, It's a lot quicker and easier to fill up from one source before being chased away than it is to sip small amounts from many flowers. Featherhoof, It looks like and adult male Ruby-throated. The timing is right for migration and we would expect adult birds to be migrating in spring. Thanks for all of the reports, Steve

I direct seeded a few varieties each of Ferry Morse "Marketmore 76" and "Tendergreen. Probably got them at Home Depot. I did not record in my book when I planted the seeds but it had to be mid September or so. I've had a few holes from bugs but we have gotten quite a few that didn't get touched and I sprayed very little pesticide.

Back to the original question about hardiness of Passiflora manicata 'Linda Escobar'. I just ran across this, from the Monterey Bay Nursery site. This is very explicit, and I'm guessing they know what they are talking about. I'll just quote the entire description: "manicata 'Linda Escobar' arguably the showiest variety and nicest flower of any species of Passionflower. The intense orange red color, dark blue coronal filaments, excellent flower size and petal conformation, and nicely held flowers that face out and up on the outside of the foliage canopy make this one hard to beat if you have the climate to grow it. It is an improved version of the species, differing as far as I can tell only in that critical point that it is facultative or simple long day initiation whereas P.manicata itself seems to be long day or very long day initiation, restricting its flowering to three summer months. This selection can flower for 7-8 months. This is right up there with the finest Salvias and Grevilleas for attracting hummingbirds, with its easy-to-find and copious nectar supply and perfect color. It is a close partner to 'Coral Seas,' matching it in almost every way except tint, and that 'Coral Seas' may have a slight edge on it in the way of flower production. Expect the same unparalleled vigor and rampant growth (can cover a house or bring down a oak if not controlled) and essentially identical behavior in frosty conditions (severly damaged below 27F, and often killed to the ground or beyond at 25F). Sun, average soils, rather drought tolerant when established and much better controlled by restricted watering. Beautiful M, great work.

Are you coming to Biosphere with your mom? I've got MANY different icebox seeds so I'd be glad to give you some to try in the spring....

I think it's still too early for corn, even where you folks are. You may only get one shot a year at it....

Ill-man, they were direct sown. Tom, I can't go. I want to. I have to work. I am interested in the icebox seeds. I love melons. Thanks. The corn thing. . I have three varieties started two weeks apart. Not all of them look as bad as the one I showed. The younger ones haven't been mangled at all. I am determined to conquor this. Oh, off the subject-My monsterous pigeon peas growing in the far left hand corner-a couple of those seeds are from you when you brought your share box to Silvia's BBQ. No pods yet, but soon.

Well, I haven't had any further damage to my corn the last few days. I have been dusting with sevin every other day after I went through every corn stock looking for worms. It seems that they have eaten the tassels off of every other stalk. I hope I will have enough for polination. I just watched a video on u tube how to polinate corn by hand and I think maybe I have a sporting chance. The silks popped out this morning so I'm all excited.

My poona keera is a definite keeper. The skin has this sweet flavor to it that is unique. This one is producing very well. I haven't even gotten any from the others yet.
