Siamese Seeds, Rain and Last Day of Hard Work

I have had two seeds this year that sprouted two roots - sort of Siamese twin seeds. I don't know if you've ever seen this or not.

Our daylilies have long since quit blooming. Roses in Snow did make a brave attempt to send up a couple of reblooms.

It has finally rained here. While it wasn't a downpour or a flood, it was enough to get everything wet, at least. Hurray! Temps are dropping from 100+ to 90s and due to go on down to upper 80's in a few days.

The good news is that tomorrow is my last day for planting sprouting seeds in cups! Any that haven't sprouted by tomorrow are going in the trash. I am so glad, because it has been really difficult for me to stand for hours day after day doing that, with swollen and painful feet, ankles and calves.

I believe I'm still suffering from an adverse reaction to the antibiotic Levaquin I took in January.

Please, oh please, if any doctor ever prescribes Levaquin for you, do as much research as you can on the net before you take one pill. If that warning can save just one person from the suffering I've been though, I can rest easily!

The siamese twin seeds sound interesting. I know birds & reptiles can have 2 babies hatch out of a single egg, so I guess plants can have 2 grow out of a single seed. Are they surviving or do they die off?

You must have had a really bad reaction to still be suffering the effects so many months later. Sorry you are suffering so. I hope it is at least gradually improving.

Here in East AL we had a WONDERFUL weekend compared to what it's been. It rained off an on all night Saturday then stayed damp, cloudy and sprinkled off and on the next day. Sunday night was even better with several big bands of wet weather that passed through during the night. I don't have a rain gauge so I'm not sure what our totals were but it didn't disappoint here. It's trying to drizzle again so we may get more tonight even though the chances of rain dropped to 20% or lower for the next week. I swear they can't predict diddly though. Those percentages on weather.com might drop from 70% to 20% or reverse and go from 20% to 70% within just a couple of hours. I don't even know why I bother checking them so often anymore. Yes, it certainly was trying hard to please me...LOL The temps were high 50's at night and upper 60's - low 70s during the day. I was thinking about this some more. One interesting hypothesis I came up with is that there may be a chemical reaction responsible for bloom fading at the end of a bloom cycle. It is interesting that the petals of what would have been the day 1 bloom really did not "melt" until the day 2 bloom's cycle was also complete. That could imply that the presence or lack of some chemical in the day 2 bloom prevented the 1st bloom cycle from ending. It seems these "siamese twin" flowers divided late in the development cycle such that they were still connected but had already begun to develop their own individual bloom "clock".

Jali, when I emptied my rain gauge on Wednesday it had 1.4” in it. When I emptied it yesterday morning it had another 2.4” in it! Flood of '65, indeed! I emailed Barb last nite to let her know I had arrived safely—tense, but safe—and I mentioned the Flood of '65 to her! She's not old enough to remember it, but I am! It rained, like this time, for a week or whatever and everything was saturated—and then, like you said, it DUMPED and that was all they wrote! All the bridges in/out of Denver on the west side of town but ONE washed out, including one that was just a couple years old and had been built for a “500-year flood!” I have pics of a span of that bridge laying in the middle of the Platte! Huge sections of I-25 and the train tracks between Denver and the Springs washed out! I still have the newspapers from right after it with all the pics! But I hadn't stopped to think that this was the 50th anniversary of it!!! Cherry Creek Dam was still new back then, and there was near panic on the news that it was going to break—they were releasing water as fast as they could. I lived in an apartment about a half a block from Speer and we were listening to the radio so we'd know when to RUN—and then the power went out! I'm still here—so, no, it didn't break! And 25th anniversary of the Limon tornado! Wow! Some years to remember! Guess you remember that one well! What I remember was I was watching TV weather and all of a sudden the radar went down! Switched channels, and no radar! Switched again—nobody had radar anymore! That's when we knew it was “serious!” If the Limon radar was wiped out—what else in Limon was wiped out! Wasn't long and the channels were picking radar up from the airport, and that's when most of them switched to doppler! Memories! I've been watching Denver radar today, and the forecast, and at least it looks like this is about the end of it for right now, so, hopefully, no repeat of '65! Not now, its too hot (not to mention sticky) and I don't want to water over there on that dry hill dragging the hose through grasses, besides I'm still thinking it through and really what I want is low stuff so late afternoon sun will come through to back light the bluestems. The only good thing is we still have lots of wind. I planted all those recent Bluestem I ordered from SRG along that side on my side, the other side where I'm clearing and planting tough stuff in is his negected side. It keeps getting thinned over time. I have a weekend planned to clip suckers and more privet, poison in hand. I've never seen such suckering trees as hackberry trees. Salvia greggii is a good fit and so far I've planted about 17 or more of them. Russian Sage is good too and I plan for more of those too. I may put some Pine Muhly in a section, I found it will take dappled sun and morning sun and sit in shade all afternoon & still look good with blooms. It blocks weeds good too & I have lots of volunteers which transplant real easy. I filled a whole section with it in the part that gets shaded earlier. Surprising. Too bad about the tall rudbeckia, they'd look good in that field & I was hoping to find a good home, they form tubers which transplant successfully, very successfully I might add. The size of the flowers blow me away, they are downright phallic not to put too fine a point on it. HUGE clumps of cabbagy large light blue leaves so its pretty in or out of bloom. Massed clumps here and there--it'd really be nice, if I only had space...... I think I might have lost the butterscotch Mexican. He hasn't shown up yet, just mahogany in that area where he came up. Rats. I'll save you all the seeds when I deadhead them this fall. A bagful with your name on them. By the way, I planted lots of seeds from the Texas grass sage you sent me and I have them planted among grasses. I think that will look good come fall. I love that plant, its airy. I'm into 'airy' right now if you haven't noticed. I got 4 white guara for the same reason.

Glad you have finished planting seeds Nancy. I remember having a seed last year that was two seeds firmly joined at the base. Not sure what happened to it. Over the years, I have modified my seed planting to suit my physical abilities, or lack of, so seeds go into the pot and I lose track of individual seeds.

We got a nice rain yesterday morning and it has been so nice. The soil is moist and cool! Been a long time since I've seen this. I'm so enjoying it! Ed

So sorry to hear you are suffering. Hope this stops soon. The few seeds we planted this year did not sprout at all, so can only blame the hot, dry weather. We do have a daylily blooming today, our NOID "Single Somebody". It is so pretty, though it is small. We had a real thunderstorm Sunday evening. Ended up with .98" of rain. It was so wonderful, and there is a slight possibility for a little more in a couple of days. Know that everyone that got needed rain is so grateful. I believe that with this rain, all fires still burning in this area have now been put out. Oh, Happy Day. Avedon

Nancy, Sorry to hear you haven't been well. Hopefully, you will bounce back soon. I know the relief you feel now that your seedlings have all been planted. Every year I say this is the last time. But by the following Spring, I've forgotten how much work it is and the cycle continues. We are enjoying some cooler weather here, too. It's about time! I am so ready for Fall.
