Stephanotis? Oh Dear! Lovely plant though.... do they smell? Flowers look like Jasmine....root easy?

I can live with this:-) Sure appears like a Hoya though.... even the way the flowers look before they open!

Off to google a new plant!(I'm glad I didn't buy the whole plant!)

Matt, I'm so glad you're here to ID this. I just looked at the pix & thought exactly the same thing. Mind you, I've never grown one but lusted after them for years. They're not so readily found around here, when they are they're too big (for my apmt anyway), some day I'll get me a cutting & take it from there!

Diane, if you've never smelled one in bloom you are in for a major TREAT, they are just divine-smelling!!!

FYI: Stephanotis is a related species (I think of them as cousins) as they are fellow Asclepiads (as are Hoyas, Ceropegias, Stapeliads, Caralluma, Orbeas, etc.)

Matt, pls. add any comments you'd care to share on this, I rarely hear from folks who grow these. I guess I should ask do you grow yours indoors or out (I'm assuming both, that you summer it outside at least)? Yours looks splendidly grown, thanks for sharing yr. pix.

If it were you confined to growing them only indoors (like me) would you?

Diane, I am green w/ envy, you did great -- very best of luck w/ it. Sounds like you made a new friend too; I'd become a frequent visitor there (if it were me).

I was just going to post that stephanotis is a member of the milk weed family and so is Hoyas! Cool... I wasn't too far off. Can't wait to smell the flowers and maybe my buds won't blast!

Diane, congrats  you will like it too as soon as the blooms appear. Looks sort of like h.australis.

It is really a nice plant and smells heavenly (outside of course  too strong for indoors with that amount of blooms open at he same time). It blooms for about 2 months  needs warmth and humidity to perform the best.
I had some problems in the fall  so it is not that big any more. Some vines died.

Growing Stephanotis indoors only is possible.
That is what I will do this year to keep it without any bugs. I almost lost it last year.
I hope it will bloom again- that would be a challenge though since AC is on through the summer in my house and direct sun is block by very tall Norway Maples.
I will keep you posted.

Diane- rooting cuttings in the fall was not successful for me but now you have a high chance since everything started growing. Try to get some tips from the propagation forum.

I went back to the greenhouse today and told the girl all I learned. We'll probably have a new GW member here tonight when she gets off work! ( she's into Orchids but we can change her mind....I'm sure:-) I'd rather see Hoya blooms than my Dendrobium.... though I would like to see that too!

Thanks Matt for the propagating forum idea.... did a search and found one chat of interest from here in the Hoya forum.... I've attatched it. (my books say to take cuttings in the summer... maybe fall was too late? hope spring isn't too early!)

Ah, let her grow her Orchids, but we can still jostle her along into Hoyas probably, right ... she's got a plant shop, so I guess she's got the room, eh??? I just can't resist fostering yet another Hoya disciple, esp. one who comes through by way of Stephanotis.

Thanks Matt for the encouragement, I really am tempted to try. Part of me thinks I do nicely w/ Hoyas, so maybe Steph. would like my conditions. I'm just a tad afraid that it could get gigantic & take over the joint! I'll have to look at a couple of special places in NYC & maybe make some inquiries. Someone here at GW mentioned seeing some locally last Oct.

Tonight in a tiny fit of madness I bought a small Gardenia loaded w/ buds. Just jumped right into my arms & I was powerless to say no. I placed it w/ my Ficuses & some Sans. 'til I'm certain it has no bugs, then I'll move it to the Hoya collection == I rarely give in to this but here goes!!!

Just curious Karen, but if you think it might have bugs why would you place it with Ficus and Sans? Gardinia's are spidermite magnets and they tend to like ficus too..... Doesn't sound like a good plan to me.....( I don't even think Hoyas are bothered much by spidermites? More the scale and mealies)

New plants in my house go straight to the kitchen table (after a bath) and stay there, out of the reach(a good 6 feet away) from other plants, till I'm sure they are safe.

I think I have had a lot of self control going into the greenhouse TWICE and not coming out with anything but 2 FREE cuttings:-) I do feel this terrible hollow feeling though.... like I've forgotten something!

No problem abt yr. question, I too am a curious sort.

I put it w/ the Sans & Ficus 'cause it needs a sunny spot while semi-quarantined. I have all my Hoyas together in the kitchen just in from west window (above the kitchen table). I'm more concerned to avoid mealy bugs as they can wipe out a Hoya collection very fast. Mealies are the only bugs I've had in my apmt & I just can't take the chance w/ all the Hoyas. While I love all my diff. Sans & the 2 Ficuses, ultimately I feel my Hoyas are more precious to me (& would be much harder for me to replace).

I don't know abt spider mites, but thought I'd heard mites like drier plants. I have the Gardenia & the Ficuses on pebble trays, so I hope they'll all be OK (& bugs won't find them so inviting.

Yes, you were VERY good in yr. discipline abt visiting the greenhouse. I hope I do as well as Spring develops.

I have a plant that looks exactly like the one michmatt posted but mine is labled H. Ciliata. I bought it from a vendor on e-bay from Hawaii. So do you think it was mislabled???? Mine hasn't bloomed for me yet so I have no idea what the blooms will look like on this plant. Thanks

I hope you have what you ordered. (you probably have a hoya) I googled H. Ciliata and it does look very similar but H. Ciliata has lightly fuzzy leaves and appear smaller than Stephanotis. Stephanotis has very shiny leaves and no fuzz!

As for my cutting, I believe it didn't like leaving the greenhouse, it lost every leaf and is now a stick with buds hanging on:-(
Oh well.....win a few, loose a few!
