Allegan Fog Sport (?)

Ok, here is the mystery hosta that was in w/ the Allegan Fog at the nursery I went to today and marked as such. It looks like Lakeside Zinger but much bigger.

Is it something "special" or is it just a hosta that I don't know the name of that exists already?

Just guessing from watching young seedlings, but I think the first one will go green. Hard to tell from the pictures, but it looks like the first leaves on the plant have the most varigation and it is getting less and less. Maybe a bad TC? The second does not have much green for vigor, but looks like it would be fun to watch. The third? Could be! Hey, if you have the money and space, get them all and show us how they develop!

Thanks for the pics, Gary. Got some nice lookers there. They sure are fun to 'catch'. I've only caught a couple. Maybe this one bears watching. It's a solid piece growing from my Earth Angel. It was a single eye of solid color (yellow/gold/?) last season, and this year it actually has three eyes of solid color, which is half the plant. I had it growing in one of the shadiest parts of my yard, but seeing how the solid parts seem to want to grow, I potted it up and have started to gradually acclimate it to more sun. The roots are LARGE for how small the actual leaf mass is, and took a two-gallon pot to properly fit them. You never know, but like you said, they sure are fun. We'll see how it does. The thought of a large yellow/gold in it's parents' form does sound beautiful, though. I'll keep my expectations tempered. But, just one more reason why hostas are SOOOO fun. Cheers, Don B.

Oops...I meant it looks like Lakeside Zing Zang....not Zinger :) It's pretty big though...already about 4-5" leaves. Isn't that too big for Zing Zang? They had Zing Zang there but it was just coming up.

Looks like AF sported and lost its green edge...nice!!

There actually are two such sports like this that I know of. London Fog is in the registration booklet that came with the current Hosta Journal.

Chick at Bridgewood Gardens has one, too, but I can't remember the name without looking. It's available on his website.

Well well well...I just found a description and it IS Lakeside Zing Zang!!! It looks like it was just started earlier than the other ones. I can't believe it!!! It not even listed in the hosta finder and is 85-100 dollars online! WHOOHOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Oops...you know what? I think you're right, Josh! It's called Mountain Mist and it's a sport of Allegan Fog (makes perfect sense to me!). Well, it still is listed in the hosta finder for 50.00 so a great buy for 10 bucks! :)

Also, in the current Hosta journal there is a section that is new called The Hybridizers notebook. Interesting read, giving different views on methods. Steve Chamberlain says an approach He used is to plant seeds from "rarely fertile" plants. From Allegan Fog he got 'Academy Grass Clippings'

What an awesome find, great job! It's absolutely gorgeous! Congrats on your new additions. It really does remind me of the photo of the Grass Clippings one in the Journal. (I drooled over that photo when I saw it)
