Things get crazy on the old LA, I've noticed. I watched five seeds go for $101 bucks the other day.

Believe me I know! Have been following it ( and salivating ) for several days.
But its the only one offered on the LA for at least the last month, and it was 300 from the hybridizer to begin with!
Personally I settled for paying 29 dollars for seeds of Bass Gibson X Tricolor Bite. And probably need my head examined for that! lol

Amazing isn't it? I have to admit that in the past I have sold very old daylilies on the auction starting at $5 and felt I won the lotto at the end. Then again, some things don't sell at all. If people want something and want to pay for it, good for the seller!!!!

I have paid crazy amounts for seed crosses that seemed perfect at the time on the auction --- once I paid $7.00 per seed for a cross that gave me absolutely nothing unique. Then again, I have crossed varieties myself with those same uglies and have been very excited with the results. The same genes are available in all of the tets (as they are in dips but cut in half) and you just never know what you will get.

Hi everybody!! I'm new to the Daylily Auction and am SOOO hooked!! I'm presently growing 29 seed crosses here my .16 acre garden in Los Angeles, CA and can hardly wait to see what comes up!

Question: Is is true very few of the seeds will come out register worthy??

Question: when crossing your own DL's in the garden, can you tell if the Pod Parent has already been polinated that morning by a bee, etc???

Welcome,Chris!Exciting,isn't it? I have heard it is something like 1 in 1000 is worthy of registering.The way I see it,if you get a pretty flower that has the qualities people want,register it,increase it,and sell it.There is a lot more than a pretty face.It should have a good strong scape with good branching,good bud count,good foliage,rust resistant,colorfast,open well in cool weather,etc..
I don't think you can be absolutely certain by just looking at it.I will put a baggie on the bud the night before it opens to be sure I get to it first.I have also put pollen on the pistil if it is sticking out of the bud before it opens.

I find now that I have to check the LA daily, for new "finds". Right now I'm interested in anything crossed with "Voodoo Magic". Did you catch its seedlings that went for upwards of $700 recently??

What does everybody recommend to use on Rust for small gardens (other than $500 fungicide...)!!

Hi Chris,

California is particularly difficult because you cannot purchase most products that will treat rust. Daconil is worthless.

You can try 1% dish detergent. Physan-20 is available over the counter at a ag. supply store and it will give you fair to excellent results depending on how faithfull you are in using it.

I would still recommend Headline or Bayleton 50 if you can find them. You can call the ag. inspector to inspect your yard and then he will give you a number allowing you to purchase any of the rest chemicals.

If you live in Z5 and below, you don't need to worry about rust. It simply doesn't over-winter in winters that are cold. Also, even in the zones where it exists, it doesn't kill your plant. Just information here.

For people looking for fungicides ( for rust) just go to Ebay and type in "Fungicide" in the search box and many good ones will pop up. I found Heritage there and had been looking for it all over locally. But you must also use a "spreader sticker" for a lot of them, I found that also on Ebay at the same vender who had the Heritage. There have also been previous forums on here about rust. Good luck.

Flowergirl70ks - Hi! Boy, aint that the truth!! If the seed crosses I purchased this season will even come out looking close to either parent, I'll be thrilled!! OK, here's a newbie question: if you self polinate a DL with its own pollen, will the seeds come out identical to itself, or STILL be all different???

I am new at this DL thing to but I have been growing and crossing Iris for a while and my thoughts are that you will not get a clone of the mother plant because you are using 2 sources of chromosones, (one from the male part, one from the female part). Therefor the plant will not be exactly the same plant. I could be wrong but that is my way of looking at it.

Ted, your way of thinking is correct, you will not get a clone of the dl.
I have seedlings of Victorian Lace X Victorian Lace and should get blooms next year. I will try to remember to post the results here for all to see.

Hi Ted and Jan!! Thanks for that answer on self-polination-this heats things up!! So the only way to propagate a certain DL (or Iris) is to let it "fan-out". Good thing they spread so quickly!!

Chris....some dl's produce proliferations on the scapes and if you plant the prolif you will get an exact duplicate of that plant. There are several recent threads on prolifs. Below is a link to one of them with lots of info.

Easy to do Chris....you just need to go to your local HD or Lowes..or Garden Center/Nursery and get a Trenching Spade...it has a long narrow slightly curved blade....you can slip it in behind a few fans on the outside edge of a clump...put a little weight into it and pop up a few fans...place some soil back around the clump base and water...that is it...

Thanks Rick! I thought that might work! This summer I tried to 'pull' a little fan off the side of a clump like I do with ornamental grasses, and it came off without any roots, and I felt so bad! But I planted it anyway and can't believe it rooted and grew! DL's are amazing!

You can also put the shovel on one side, dig partial clump and use a long screwdriver to pry off a few fans. Remove shovel, stomp back down and you're done.

Hi JoAnn - so sorry to hear about the rust in your garden. I'm very scared about this subject, as I don't want to have to actually get all those really expensive fungicides. I read all the DL forums on rust, and the feedbacks we've gotten, and there doesn't seem to be a simple answer. I sure wish they could come out with a nursery fungicide for it as this problem will just keep spreading otherwise.

Jackarias - I'm a landscaper and I'd like to use hybridizer's DL's in my garden designs. I'm a little affraid though, what if clients later get rust on their DL's. Would love everybody's thoughts on this-has anyone else used high-end DL's in landscape designs with success of surviving rust? Also, what seems to be the worst state in the U.S. infected with rust to date?

Hi JoAnn,
Sorry to hear you have rust. Severe cutting back, followed by spraying with a fungicide will eventually work. To be successful, you will have to eliminate those plants that seem to be most susceptible and harboring the rust.
The only dish-washing liquid I have seen actually tested is DAWN Dish-washing Liquid. It did inhibit rust growth for short periods.
Bayer makes a product called "All In One" which contains fertilizer, pesticide and fungicide and available at most home-improvement and garden stores. The fungicide is tebuconazole, systemic and applied by watering the plant. I have not seen any tests of this fungicide against daylily rust in particular, but several people use it and recommend it, especially for prevention of daylily rust. Email me if you want more info.

I would not recommend using the newer daylilies for landscaping. They look terrible covered in rust and the newer plants are more susceptible to foliage problems than older ones. Look for proven landscaping daylilies if you are in zones 8 and higher.
Florida is where most of the daylilies are hybridized and therefore I would guess it gets the rust awards!

JoAnn-This is my first year with rust too.I think it came on Raspberry Winter,as it was the first to show any signs of it and the worst affected. Fire and Fog and Malaysian Monarch were also affected on either side.

Chris-Do a search on rust resistant daylilies.I have seen a list of them somewhere. If you don't give the client daylilies that are infected,you are not going to be responsible for any spores that travel on the wind.I understand what you are saying,though.I think ditchlilies and maybe Kwanso are the only ones really immune to the stuff.

Hi Ed and Betsy -Its so great to actually hear all these accounts of rust and that other newbies are as confused as me - I still don't really know when the 'streaking' that DL's get is just snail/worm trails discoloration or might be the start of it. I pinch off what doesn't look good to me and treat, and so far I haven't seen any dusty spores yet. What I don't know is what it is when a DL leaf has a lighter green 'leopard print' like color running through it, like it lost some color but is not yellow yet. Is that the start of it also??

I'm sad Ed that it isn't recommended to use these in garden design - I'm going to work on that. Our nursery has disease resistant DL's that are very pretty - but nothing compared to these incredible crosses. I'm going to watch my high end DL's and see if any develop as more rust-resistant ones. I figure that if I have them several seasons without any hint of it, maybe I could try to use them then.

the yellow-green streaking is, in my experience, a mineral deficiency. Look up iron chlorosis and see if the symptoms match. I find those beds with plants that are streaked yellow green commonly have high pH levels or high phosphorous levels, either of which may make micro-nutrients unavailable to the plant.
Do a soil test if possible to confirm. I would add 50 lbs of Milorganite per 100 sq feet of bed plus an application of Ironite. If the pH is high, you need to add some type of sulphur, maybe ammonium sulfate, to lower it. You could also lift the plant and put around a lb of Milorganite under it.
Also, I didn't mean to infer that there aren't newer rust resistant daylilies. They just seem to be the exception, rather than the rule. There are several lists of daylilies with rust resistance ratings. University of Arkansas, Univ. of Georgia and check out the rust survey at Rebecca Board's Cyberlily Gardens site.

Ed - You are so right!! That is actually occuring in a bed that I planted my roses initially, and used Miracle Grow Rose Soil with Bone Meal, which I think might have made it too high a PH. I will test it and let you know!!
