Saying good-bye to 2 and a surprise

It is the end of the season for WREN'S SONG and WORTH IT ALL as they have no more blooms after today. They need the rest and next year I hope they bloom this long again.

Still waiting for a couple more daylilies to open, if they do open. Temps moderated and more rain on the way again.

For other perennials, I finally got to see the Blanket Flower open. I started these from seed in the ground and was wondering if I'd actually see them bloom.

And then, for my wildlife pic today, this bird was perched on our garage roof. Never have we seen one around the house.

Hate to say this but, it is ugly. I'm not sure what type of vulture it is, IF it is a vulture. I posted it on the bird forum to see if anyone would know what type it is. Any guesses?

Fabulous pictures of an ugly bird. Makes me think vulture when I see it also but of course not sure. You sure do get some interesting wildlife in and around your garden. Both daylilies are really pretty today but I like WORTH IT ALL the best.

You have to understand not everyone knows what a native or not native tree is and many do not know what type of tree they have. It is to keep unscrupulous developers from SCALPING land. I am sure our rules changed here but it use to be if they were too close to the house(as this one obviously is) you didnt need a permit I think after the hurricanes our permitting office just gave up. Honestly My NEW neighbors thought their trees were dead pines so I checked.One was a bald cypress and one was a jacaronda.Both are deciduous here so they would have cut down perfectly healthy trees.

I'm with Kevin, above. Stone slab countertops aren't going away, if for no other reason than that they can be more economical than laminate or tile. A good tile-setter here in LA will charge $125/linear foot or more for installation. If you shop right, you can find prefab 8' long granite countertops for as little as $150, with installation and minor fabrication for a few hundred dollars more. It won't be the finest workmanship at that price, but still, you can get a basic 8' countertop with 4" backplash for $600 or less, installed, while the tile-setter's labor alone will be twice that, without adding in the cost of tile, mortar, grout or hardibacker. Unless you're buying prefab laminate counters at the big box store, toting them home yourself, and doing your own templating, cutting, and installation, you'll be hard put to match the price of those prefab stone counters. Special-order laminate costs about twice as much as prefab stone. So much for "In depth" reporting at CNN.

Wow, NHB - that is one gorgeous view. We've seen our share of houses perched on mountain sides and that's not for us. I love the more rolling land with the distance views of the mountains. It's not all about the land, of course, it's also lifestyle, and we love the slightly off kilter, hippy aspect aspects of Asheville along with the great dining, outdoor activities, entertainment options, the variety of festivals in the area etc. Last year we went down there with friends for LoxFest which was a hoot! bgj your trips to Knoxville sound like ours to Asheville, looking for the area that fits and is far enough away for peace but still allows us to get there and enjoy the aspects we love. I do want to go to Oak Ridge, though, just to see it! I would prefer to find an existing home and remodel it like we did this one but we haven't seen anything worth putting the time and $$ into. Biggest issue for DH is he won't accept a block basement, it has to be poured so I imagine we'll build. that's another thing to freak out about. We want a smallish house on acreage and if the land is there the house is 3500 sq ft and up - way more than I want to deal with. ellendi I hear you on the need for medical care. Privacy vs isolation is the tricky part but DH and I are partners and neither one of us is going to play the martyr for the other. We'll find a balance or we'll move on. Bottom line is, when I'm happy, he's happy ;-) bpathome we're really neighbors, you know? Several friends live on the main drag east of town. You probably knew/know one or two. And do not get me started on the library! That is honestly one of the hardest things for me to leave - we have the BEST library. shee that fixture is from Sea Gull Lighting but it's old and certainly not current stock. I spray painted it with Rustoleum ORB paint years ago when the look of brass was totally passé.

Judy, you are leaving your house, and I slept in my new one. Soon you will be able to say this too. We stayed on our camping mattresses in our house. I didn't sleep well. Weird, as I usually sleep well on that mattress, but in a tent. Maybe I should have pitched mine? LOL We spent all day yesterday cleaning (sweeping out cabinets and washing them out). Sure is messy cleaning up after others. I am tired of that. I hope, yours will be clean enough to pass the white glove test. Enjoy your time with your son. "see" you soon. Moni

The DLs are awesome even for their last blooms! And the big birdy is a black vulture by looks of her (I think). Very common throughout the states and especially in coastal states.

Hi Julia,
That looks as if it might be a juvenile Turkey Vulture...its tail is longer in proportion to the body than a black vulture's would be, but the color on the beak is like a juvenile, not an adult's color.

Vultures are ugly, but I always smile when I see one since it brings back the memory of my son (the father of five) as a twelve year old with a quirly, pre-teen sense of humor describing the vulture as his "buddy". (This was on the last family trip before he bagan the natural sdistancing that teens do.)

And I really love both of your daylilies.

Wow. That's a really impressive bird. The first pic where it is looking right at the camera is neat.

WORTH IT ALL and WREN'S SONG both look so lovely in their final bloom.

They always remind me of the Disney Cartoon (Jungle Book?) when the vultures kept asking each other what they wanted to do.

Beautiful dayllilies.especially wren's song.Ugly Bird. looks like a BUSSARD TO me.whatever it is, its a ugly one.

Kay: You've confirmed what the consensus is that it is a young turkey vulture.

We do see alot of wildlife here. Lots of acreage for them to wander about but this bird was not something I expected. I didn't move too far away from our house door when snapping the photos. LOL When it looked right at the camera, it was a bit scary and I started to think maybe I should go inside.

Beautiful last blooms!
Glad you got to see your Blanket Flower. I tried it from seeds last year - only weeds grew.
Oh, and the bird is scary alright. I just returned from outside to take our cat it, there was a lot of commotion, turned out it was a hawk chasing birds, some small birds and crows.
