Hurray for the Late-bloomers! (photos)

I am SO grateful that I have so many late-bloomers now that it is September and the gardens are looking forlorn. I do have phlox, coneflowers, rudbeckia and hardy hibiscus blooming but after the glory of June and July with the roses, oriental lilies and daylilies peaking, August and September were 'saved' by the lateblooming daylilies.

They may be plain & simple compared to the earlier daylilies, but right now they look gorgeous to me.

And I'm ordering more for next year!

PUMPKIN TIME....

(I highly recommend this one! It is a bud-builder. Mine has been blooming since early August and is still going strong. It is new this year so I can only imagine it's performance next year.)

I,m glad you are getting blooms. I have one puny one on a first time bloom seedling. I was a little surprised it looked so good since we are getting so much needed rain....Purple Grasshopper is my pick for favorite...Ellie

plse tell us what are those striking looking red headed grasses beyond this bed?are they really red?and where are you?- that's always helpful to have in your i.d. so we can give (and get) the best advice from you! I like the suggestions for foliage color rather than flowers.Grasses and small shrubs would be great for giving you some rounded solid masses and vertical spikes w/height. some ideas: daphne carol mackie barberry- ppl helmond's pillar. ------------- blue lyme grass(plant in pot to keep from roaming) helichtrotrichon oat grass short zebra grass miscanthus variega. annual ppl fountain grass- pennisetum pennisdetum moudry- black fuzzy seed heads ------------------ amsonia hubrechtii- airy/ferny- turns wonderful gold in fall; would be great abutting the asters stachys - the non flowering one- as an edger ppl perilla- large deep ppl leaves variegated iris- good wide bold varieg spikes eupatorium chocolate p.s. how 'bout growing some lovely clematis over that stone wall? and edging the wall w/ lavender which loves hot hot full sun reflected heat? best, mindy www.cottonarboretum.com/

Juliet...it does have a few teeth on this one. We'll see what the following blooms look like. Glad you enjoyed my photos. Tom...I'm glad you enjoyed my album and to answer your question, no, I have not been to the Joiner garden yet. My sister and I were supposed to go last summer and her husband was hospitalized. I hope to get over there though...maybe next season. Ack! Someone thinks I'm an expert! No no NO LOLOL. I consider myself a newish newbie still, and I am a TOTAL sucker for a pretty face! Seriously though, thank you for the very kind words, but I really don't consider myself to be all that knowledgeable yet. But what I do is get lots of catalogs and spend WAY TOO MUCH time looking at hybridizers' and sellers' web sites....I belong to several lists....I enjoy visiting gardens, love being able to see tour gardens during conventions, regional meetings, etc.....I've gone to the same AHS display garden several million times at this point, and I always see something new or learn something new about the plants, or I see old, familiar faces in a new light....I've taken a garden judges and exhibition judges clinic....I belong to AHS and to two local clubs, and I entered my very first daylily show this summer (what a blast that was!)....I have catalogs, price lists and newsletters from the latest going back years....I have a near-complete set of AHS journals....I have TONS AND TONS of images saved, with text files of the posters' accompanying comments on the daylilies, on daylily culture and etc etc etc....the hybridizers with whom I'm not at least semi-familiar? Probably just a handful of local ones here or there throughout the country. IOW, there are SO MANY ways for everyone to learn and pick up useful info. So you can pick and choose what seems right for you at the time. (IMO everyone should at least consider joining AHS and at least one local club....I think the cost is trivial relative to what you can conceivably get out of it.) But despite all that, IMHO the REAL experts and knowledgeable people here are floota, shive, and others like them, who are long-time daylily growers who have or have had substantial daylily collections (compared to my really rather smallish one) and who know so much more than I do.... still, I do feel pleased that you enjoy some of my comments. :)))

This one was forced. i used the pollen early but no pods set in the heat. its now coming around for a second try 2 months later. it is a blusher out of junes gold. a tardiana. not sure seed will mature in time but tardianas will keep going right up until freeze. Luckily i have a strong blusher blooming at the same time. for another gene injection the proposed union from this spring

Rich color on Pumpkin Time! And I am also drawn to Purple Grasshopper. VT Moonlit Dance is a wonderful clump. What is the height of this on? The bitone and form are very appealing.

OH CELESTE> So many gorgeous blooms and in september too, makes them even more gorgeous. I love pumkin time, also, the first one, but you have so many pretty ones, hard to pick just one or even two or three. I have only one blooming right now,and thats CONDILLA. its been blooming for sseveral months and still going.\

Celeste, all of these are so beautiful. How lucky you are to have so many lovely late bloomers. I'll bet you are not suffering with high temps right now like we are. It will be close to 100 degrees for the next few days. That's one reason I think late bloomers might not do so well here, they would be burned out now. However, Beautiful Edgings is still going, and I have found several new scapes on Leebea Orange Crush, and if we get a cooldown by this weekend, all the DLs just might start in again, will wait and see. Celeste, you have really gotten into the late bloomers and have done a fabulous job with your collection. And it is so nice to have blooms much later than normal and after your neightbors are all done.

So many nice VT selections pictured and I love them all!

What a great collection of late bloomers. I like all of them, but I think my very favorites are Pumpkin Time and September Blaze.
