Dancing Queen begins her performance

Here she is almost glowing in front of Invincible, Pineapple Upsidedown cake, and Sweet Home Chicago who looks like grass (or a spike torture bed...).

All but about 3-4 of my hostas have broken ground. They come up in the same order every year it seems, with Invincible, Lederhosen, and Spartan Arrow leading the way.

Very Very Nice! You seem to have 1 1/2 months ahead of mine. Here in NY all snow is nearly gone except for 3 snowmen. Temperatures are now getting into the 50s, so my hostas will be coming in a month. Bernd

Carl, the green stripe mostly disappear as the flower color matures it is only most evident in the bud, I'll look forward to looking at your album later....thanks!!We may never be able to positivly ID some of these oranges! Pat we just adore Toby!!! He was a stray is about 6-8 years old and we have both become his servants!! My father also has a stray cat that is just wonderful, and my Aunt has taken several cats from the Humane Society and all of these cats have been the nicest cats ever!! These cats that have been abandoned just make the best pets....they seem to know that they have found love and they really give it back!! We have to keep him as an indoor cat since we have coyotes in our area and we were worried that he wouldn't know how to use a cat box but he does and has never! make a mistake! Toby is a lap cat in my lap constantly and he weights about 17 lbs, a really big boy! In the future we will always look to give a middle aged cat a better life....they deserve it! I hope your car makes it to the Humane Society!! Keep us posted! And I'm glad you're enjoying all the pictures that everybody posts! daughter's poor school performance

They might replace the grade, or they might average the two grades together, or some other option. The school counselor should be able to tell you how they determine the final grade for the course. The parents who visit this forum are all dealing with different personalities of kids, different school systems, etc. All we can do is draw on our own experience, and if my kids didn't want me talking to their teachers that would be a great big huge red flag to me. Occasionally my kids have had teachers were impossible to deal with reasonably (one of my son's teachers had a complete breakdown one year and was committed to an institution). But for the most part my kids' teachers have been some of my biggest allies and advisers. You might ask your daughter why she doesn't want you to talk to her teachers. Are the teachers going to tell you something your daughter doesn't want you to know (like she's flirting with her boyfriend in class), or is she afraid you'll say something to anger the teachers and they'll take it out on her? Teachers are a parent's best resource, and parents should be the teachers' best resource. I'd be very, very suspicious if my daughter never wanted me to talk to *anyone* about her schoolwork. As far as the post above about good study habits being genetic and not learned, some kids are just naturally organized and good students, that's true. But most kids who aren't naturally organized can learn those skills. I know that from experience. I completely agree that it's not enough to say "you just have to try". Many, many kids don't know exactly what to do to try, and many of the ones who know what to do don't have the discipline to follow through. Instead of saying to her "you just have to try", you might want to try identifying exactly what it is you want her to do, monitoring her progress in that area and setting up consequences if she doesn't follow through. What is it exactly that you want her to do - do her homework, go in for help every day with her chemistry teacher, memorize her equations? There are a world of things she can do. We've had math and chemistry formulas taped to the bathroom mirror, the dash of the car, the inside of the front door. We've fit our equations into popular songs and danced around the room singing equations. We've set aside homework hours - only homework can be done during that time. Kids sometimes need help coming up with study techniques - like highlighting notes, using sticky notes, organizing their notebooks, etc. I've had teachers I respect tell me the best predictor of academic success is organizational skills, not intelligence. I don't know if that's true, but helping your daughter learn to get organized would be very, very helpful for her. Having said all that, the truth is that she's halfway into her junior year of high school. So speaking only for myself, it would be pretty late into the game to be on my daughter's case for something I've let go her whole life to this point. If this situation was mine, I'd help my daughter all she wanted, but I don't think I'd go toe-to-toe over it at this point in life. I hope you find something that works for all of you. Enjoy the holidays with your daughter, teens grow up so fast.

I must admit that I've become very disappointed with Marie. Not by her dancing - she dances as well as I thought she could. I think she's done very well all things considered. And I'm not sure why she's still there except the obvious - it's a popularity contest, not a dance competition. My problem is that I've come to believe that she must be incredibly spoiled. I used to think she was what my Mom used to call "an authentic person" . Someone that seemed to be a 'real' person in spite of all the celebrity noise surrounding them. Now I'm beginning to see that she might just be craving attention. As the only girl among all those boys she probably just grew up with it. I wonder what the spouses of her brothers think about her. I could easily be wrong. But her behavior just seems a tad overbearing.

I'm sorry she's ill (I'm still skeptical), but I think Tamar is an arrogant, self serving, show off. I won't miss her. I've watched most of the DWTS seasons and I don't remember disliking anyone as much as I dislike her

I had to go to the HL to figure out what performance DQ might be beginning. Now, I'd like to see the whole performance. Inquiring minds want to see.

I don't see PUDC Babka! But your DQ looks outstanding. I can't wait for mine to break dormancy. I must have done something wrong. Or squirrels had gotten to mine before winter set in. :o(

Gogirlterri- PUD is right there on DQ's right. You can faintly see the darker edges materializing. Later in Summer the centers get almost parchment color and the edges darker green. Always a very graceful looking plant.

Once your Hosta Room is emptied (I assume all your babies eventually break free and wander your garden) do you use that lovely space for anything else? I could picture a lovely evening dinner in there - white linen-draped table, chairs, twinkle lights, candles, crystal, wine and wine. Maybe even more wine.

Hostanista- That was a former hot tub area off the master bathroom. We have sliding doors from the bathroom just a couple feet away. NOT conducive to fine dining. 70% of the hostas stay in there. I have about 90 different ones, and they just won't fit in there once they leaf out. The top is open with redwood 2x2" and shade cloth. We have no space in our small yard (Japanese style garden) that isn't already covered with plants. Since we don't freeze, things stay green all year (except for the Japanese Maples and a couple small deciduous trees).

I move some of my favorites to the deck outside my family room sliding glass doors so I can see them most of the day from the kitchen/fam room. I'm fickle, so favorites get changed out often. The ones in the tea house atrium will get spread out as they leaf out and need more room. Those benches are all movable, so I can tuck in impatiens or other coleus, and whatever to make it be an enjoyable place to just sit sometimes.

What you see in the photo is how they are stored for the winter (and out of sight) when it rains here. They are all just waking up now. We put a tarp over that area of the atrium to keep the hostas dry.

Very different situation from you snow folks. But when your wondrous Spring happens, EVERYTHING gets new fresh leaves while we have broad leaf evergreens that keep last year's bug damage. I have to cut my liropes to the ground each March, so I don't get all those tired leaves hanging on.

Trade offs... Enjoy what you got!
