Do you have one you are anxious to see come up this year?

Year before last I had some seeds form on my Savannah Supreme. I noticed some were striped seed pods and I planned to and harvest them. We had a family emergency and I could not get back to get the seed. Boyo, was I sad to miss getting the seed. . While working around Savannah Supreme last spring I came upon a very nice surprise. . one of the seeds self planted and it was a baby of color! So I am kinda looking forward to seeing if it comes back and with color. .

How about you. . what are you looking forward to seeing this year?

I have a Blue Angel that I am anxious to see how huge it gets this year. Also, 2 years ago I planted 4 Halcyon around a June. This combo should be gorgeous this year.

I'm looking forward to many, one is Daybreak - Planted in 08. In 09 leaves made nice improvement. Stayed nice yellow all season. Hoping it'll stick its elbows out and fight for more room this year.

I have avoided this post because this is SO HARD to answer. I feel like if I mention one, the others seeds will say, "Well, fine! We won't germinate for you!" So my lips are sealed. Truly, it's after they really grown in the yard (and second or third year on perennials) that I get an idea of whether i truly look forward to them or not. I've noticed that when I rely and wait eagerly on one plant, it always seems to be another plant that I sorely underrated that performs (and dresses up the garden) beyond my wildest dreams (and beyond the one I was waiting so eagerly for). Dry creeks: Do you have one? Have you planted in and around one?

Thank-you people! We now have a fairly long dry creek which needs to handle a high volume of water. It has two levels - water comes in from the top and is "visual" and then directly under this is a hidden french drain - they all drain into a dry pond which will be filled with moisture loving native plants to clean the ground water - then it all goes back into a pipe and down the way. There are also funky tributaries to our dry creek to handle all the water coming down the bank, a few more areas need to be incorporated. It was made by the contractors and we just used rip rap but I will also add in my concrete "chunks" and the few nice found rocks the contractors dug up while grading. Eduarda, thanks for that article! It's perfect. Essentially I want mine to look like a cross between Cameron's beautiful dry creek and the Fine Gardening dry creek. Cameron, I will need to get some ideas from you about the native grasses you planted in here. Luckily I will have the ability, if necessary to "reverse" the flow of water from stored water back into the dry creek to keep everything moist. A pump and an underground water line that runs back up to the "front" of the stream will do the trick. So far our "project" is shaping up very well. A few more things need to happen before the patios go in - more retaining walls and drainage. I've got a LOT of planting to do these next few years. I have a feeling winter sowing will be my best friend!

Which Hybridizer's Intros Do You Look Forward to Most?

Pat and Grace Stamile sold Floyd Cove and moved to CA but both are still hybridizing. However, part of their agreement in the sale was that they couldn't introduce anything for a period of years. They ARE finding it a challenge to hybridize on the Pac. coast - blooms don't open as well, etc. But I look for them to have some introductions over the next couple of years. What they are doing now is on a much more limited basis than the big operation they once ran, however. I too LOVE almost anything from Judy Davisson, Curt Hanson and Jamie Gossard, I also grow a lot of plants from Reg. 3 hybridizers because they were hybridized locally and do well here : Margo Reed, Jim Murphy, Pat Cochenour, Don Herr, all have great plants that perform like troopers in my garden and I never hesitate to add their plants. I do grow quite a few plants from Reg.2 hybridizers in recent years - have enjoyed some from Bret Clement,Sandy Holmes, Gerald Bushong and others. Lots of great hybridizers out there! I will say (and it has taken years of growing daylilies to learn this) that in recent years I have shied away from some of the Southern grown plants in favor of those which are grown in similar climates. Some of those beauties with the big edges for example, never look like that here, and I'm tired of the frustration of trying to grow a Southern belle that will never be happy here.Some Southern plants that generally do well here on the edge of zones 6/7 are the Ellers plants and Nan Wilkerson's.

Emily, what beautiful fountains! I especially love the copper pot one, and I can't believe you drilled through a rock! It looks great. I've been dreaming of a pond for years now, preferably one with a small waterfall. I don't see it happening for awhile yet, though. Too big of a project to take on at this time. As for mosquito control, I always assumed that I would just use those dunks or granules - no fish planned here. Although I believe that Emily is correct in that moving water disturbs/repels mosquitos. I have to admit though, that I was at my in-laws this weekend, and they just put in a small fountain, and quite frankly, after a few hours, the thing was driving me crazy, lol! I had been thinking of getting a small fountain for my patio, but after this weekend I may rethink that. If it drove me crazy at the in-laws, it will drive me crazy at home - but at least I can turn off the one at home. Maybe instead of a patio fountain I will just do a patio water garden. :) Dee

I'm really looking forward to one which a good hosta friend shared with me last summer- hosta Osiris Obscur. The large, heart-shaped leaves are very interesting because the foliage is contorted and very heavily puckered.

I have several,including Sharp Dressed Man,and Frozen Margarita,which I got from Bob Solberg himself;but this little guy,which I call a Fragrant Bouquet sport,was transplanted from the parent plant last August. Of course,it may turn out to be just another plant of the same type,but you never know! Take a look. Phil

Don, Wow! I can see why you're looking forward to 'Osiris Obscur' showing itself. That's a spectacular looking hosta.
Sidney 1515, Hope your streaked baby comes back bigger and better. I'm actually looking forward to a few 'Liberty's
coming up. I'm hoping they have that mature look this year.
I'm also looking forward to some seedlings from last year coming up. This will be the first year I'll hopefully have a bunch of seedlings coming back, and I'm really looking forward to it.

That Osiris hosta is phenomenal! I love everything about it. I am looking forward to seeing Manhattan and Thunderbolt, two faves that get noticeably better every year for me. The one I'm most curious to see is Delta Dawn, which is the only one that I cut all the way back after the hail wrecked everything. So I am curious to see how doing so may have affected it, or if it did.

With my black thumb and crappy weather (snowing again) I'll be happy if the two dozen hosta planted last year suvive the winter that doesn't want to end.

I wonder how the white centered Eskimo Pie and Dancing in the Rain fared, because I placed them much too young into the ground 2 years ago, should have potted them. Then naturally I look forward to the big blue boys, see if they have grown up, dream of that big growth spurt.

I have a trio of Sum of All, Blue Angel, and T-Rex growing together in the center of a bed that is on the level at the top of a terraced area and then looking up at it from below. This is their 5th year and I'm looking forward to see the impact they make as they near full size.

I bought this house 3 full years ago (starting my 4th gardening season now), and this was the first official bed I dug out grass from scratch and planted & spaced everything with a proper game plan, structure shrubs, jap maple, a birdbath. Nothing was shoved in or randomly placed.

Everyone looked great in their Creep Year. I don't do official written eye counts anymore, but my mental count is telling me every single hosta has put on multiple eyes between Creep and Leap.

Liberty is up. The rest range from nubbins to being ready to unfurl.

This is the first year I'm going to stand back with a critical eye and determine if the bed needs companion plants or whatever.

Very excited!

Well,all my hostas are up,so I would have to say Winter Snow. It has leaves that are easily 3 times wider than last year,and it was just planted last year,in July. So far,this is going to be the best hosta year ever! Phil
