It brightened my day so I decided to share, my very first Hibiscus from seed, its quiet special because it is not available in our region at all:

Nice picture! Kinda jumps out at you. I don't think I've ever seen seeds for Hibiscus.

Thanks, I haven't seen them either, till I bought the seeds of "Hibiscus moscheutos Disco Sun Belle Mixed" online from Thompson and Morgan (UK).

Luna and Disco Belle: differences

The only Lunas I have are Luna Reds. They are definitely not as robust as my Disco Belles. The foliage on my Lunas is smooth-textured while the Disco Belle's is coarser. The seedling Disco Belle that turned out to have the large deep pink flowers has smooth foliage but is vigorous. The other hibiscuses I have are a couple of 'Lord Baltimore' and a couple of 'Fireball'. The Fireballs have foliage like a cutleaf Japanese maple! The foliage is, I gather, supposed to be dark but it doesn't get very dark for me. I now also have the 'Midnight Marvel' waiting to be planted. We'll see how that one does... I've tried 'Pinot Noir' twice but they never made it through their first winter after planting. The pale pink Disco Belles are my best performers - long, profuse flower season, never need pinching. I've not noticed JB problems, although the resident snail population chew some holes - never enough to be really unsightly... The hibiscuses are late to appear - end of May at the earliest here - but my garden is so densely planted that their late arrival doesn't leave too obvious holes :-) Re positioning... Mine are mostly in the big front bed and the driveway border. The plantings tend to be on the tallish side so the hibiscuses fit in at or near the front so they can be easily seen. How soon to pot up Disco Bell Seedlings?

I try to leave my seedlings undisturbed for several months, until they have a couple of sets of leaves. One of the nursery men I know says they should be left until you can lift the plant and whole soil ball as one... I try to plant my seeds in 1 gallon pots, that way I can leave them on my porch for their first winter. The weaker plants die during the winter and the 2nd year plants are much hardier and transplant into the garden with less stress. You gotta remember, we're all just folks..I work 2 jobs, garden for myself and my mom,, helped my daughter move this month, took a Braille certification test..... We get back to the forums when we can. Try to play nice with us.

I'm in Ark. zone 8 and have Disco Belle in my yard. From winter sewn seeds several years ago. They are pretty hardy even young ones. PP

The way you photographed it looks like the flower is bigger than the pot. I love the name too.

I grew 5 plants of this earlier this year,the red ones. They did great until mid Aug. Then they quit blooming and all the leaves dropped. Now the leaves are coming back and I saw one bud starting yesterday. The flower in the photo looks bigger than the pot because it is. Mine are still less that two feet tall, but the flowers are easily 8". I got my seed from Park. They have red white and mixed as I recall.

Thanks everyone, it is hardy to USDA zone 5 and this bloom opened on a 100F day... seemingly delicate but actually tough..

Do these hibicus go deciduous?

Thanks John...

As far as my limited knowledge is concerned some categorized them as deciduous and some not, I guess they behave variably in different climate..
