Things are slow... but blooms (pics)

Hi All!!

Well, things are definately slow here bloom wise, but I still have a few that are going and going!! Earlene Garber still has two new scapes to bloom out, and both clumps of Navy Blues still have buds. Getting down to the nubbins, so I keep looking for more scapes! I will be getting my fall orders here in about two weeks, so I look forward to those Maryott's plants! They always put up new scapes after planting.

Hey, things are looking great for blooms at your place. That GOING BANANAS looks wonderful. I love THESE EYES, I wish mine had rebloomed but no luck this year.

They are mothballs, but they were taken up within an hour of putting them down. I planted garlic next to them and I'm sure they would have poisoned my root vegetables and edible lettuces nearby. I have some other sprouts that look more like the marigold leaves on the second set of leaves, so these maybe maple. I just didn't want to pull them up as a weed if they were my marigolds. I planted some last year and none sprouted, now I see a variety of new shoots resembling those more in the picture of the real ones, not those in my yard. Do you really think they could be maple? The leaves don't look like maple. I did get some leaves from my dad's yard and he's got lots of maples.

I've seen your opinions on several forums and it seems you're always disappointed with some fruit or other (OK, I'm mainly thinking about certain types of citrus, and now pawpaw)." I go thru a continuous improvement program on my fruit trees. Out for various reasons are pawpaws, cherry of the rio grande, barbados cherry, panzarella orange, panzarella lemon, pomona sweet lemon, vainiglia sanguigno orange, republic of texas orange, strawberry guava, goumi, "cold hardy" citrus, mortenson grapes, muscadines, limequats, wekiwa tangelo, tarocco blood orange, ujukitsu sweet lemon, meiwa x nagami seedless kumquat, valencia orange, bloomsweet grapefruit, sulcata(sanbokan) sweet lemon Most are out because they don't taste as good as the best of what is available, don't do well in SE Texas or are over-hyped by certain nurseries. TreeSearch nursery of Houston, TX hypes the sour mortenson bunch grape and the very average Republic of Texas orange for what reason other than to sell them I don't know. There isn't much information on the web for many of these fruit duds. In with me are miho satsuma, fairchild mandarin, sanguinelli blood orange, orlando tangelo, nova mandarin, clementines, cara cara red navel, golden grapefruit, changshou kumquat, norman seedless nagami kumquat. IMHO these are the best of the best. Still under evaluation but promising for SE Texas(I haven't tasted them yet) are xie shan satsuma, miyagawa satsuma,duncan grapefruit, marsh grapefruit, valentine grapefruit, pomogranite, 88-2 lee x nova and 15-150 lee x orlando mandarins, pong koa mandarin, ponkan mandarin. Get 2 goats, Lori. I decided to move it as the developing spike needed more head room and in the process broke it offffffffff....... I tool around with a very convenient handicap tag on my car, not because I'm handicapped but because my son in law is an orthopedic surgeon. Do they have MENTAL HANDICAP TAGS for a clutz like me? The only good thing about it is that at my age next year will be here so fast it will seem like tomorrow. You are aware that life is like a roll of toilet paper, the closer it gets to the end the faster it rolls. Maybe I should post 'crying, moaning, groaning and venting, Episode 9.' Or are we up to 10? Hey James, thanks. When i first planted my kentia outside, the existing leaves were burned really bad. We have very hot and long summers, often staying above 100 degrees Farenheit for weeks at a time. The emerging leaves weren't harmed by the sun though. I have seen 10 meter + kenias in full sun in the inner valleys of Los Angeles where temperatures are similar to ours and they seem to tolerate the sun just fine. I think it's all about aclimatizing the palm to the sunlight. You know, there are many queens here that continuously fruit and produce seed. I MIGHT be able to find and collect seeds for you. Again, I MIGHT. I'll keep my eyes out for a couple of large clumps of fruit that are hanging on palms that are planted at the local McDonald's. About the strelitzia, i would think that they are both equally hardy. I have both in my yard. I can tell you though that mature reginae clumps are more common than mature nicolai clumps. I don't know if it is due to the availablilty of nicolai as opposed to that of reginae. There are some older parts of town that have nicolai clumps that are as tall as the two story houses they are planted outside of. Here are two of the four reginae that i have here at home.

Thanks for posting the great photos of Navy Blues - it does have a lot of blue in it. Very Berry Ice is especially pretty too! I've never seen Palace Garden Beauty that pale color - still beautiful though.

Beautiful!!! Thanks so much for sharing them with us. I have blooms on Exotic Love, Cajun Gambler, and Leah Abbott today. EL had 4 blooms Wed. and has 3 today. It's really been showing off. I'm also waiting on a Maryott order, but I won't get mine till the first of Oct. I'll probably have scapes though, I always do on his dl's.

I really like These Eyes & Navy Blues! Palace Garden Beauty is 1 I really want. It looks a lot different than other pics I've seen of it. Is it the time of day? It is also a parent to Korth's Purify My Heart!

THESE EYES is such a pretty flower. I may have to get that one. Your NAVY BLUES looks so much prettier than mine did this year....hopefully it will look as good as yours next year. Great to see that you still have some bloom going on there.

Very pretty! I especially like These Eyes and Navy Blues.. it is really wonderful to see a group shot this time of year. I might just have to add Navy Blues to my list!

lalalandwi - I think PGB is so light because it has been so hot here, and this was one of the last blooms. The picture was taken in the morning, so it is not from sun fade. I think PGB has a "weather" color determining trait. The cooler the day, the stronger the color for me on this one.

Jan - it is so nice to see clumps of blooms later in the season. Today I have two flowers on Earlene Garber... but I think they are the last two! :o(

Navy Blues has been a great increaser for me. And a great bloomer. It is really hard to get a "color correct" picture of These Eyes, but that picture above captures it. In the morning it can look even a tad more blue-purple, but usually it looks like the picture. It likes to bloom three at a time for me too!
