Plant Swap Tampa - One Month Away

Come one and come all, it's in one month 9/1/07, starting at 10:00 at my humble home. As we get closer I'll post directions (easy to find). Looking forward to the excitement.

This sounds awesome. I've never been to one before. What do you bring? Is it just like it sounds? Whatever you want to swap with someone else?

OMG..I have almost procrastinated to long. I have been seeing that sign up the road now for 3 years and just decided to do something about it. I'm a newbie at this sorta thing so please,..be gentle. I have 2 chiquita banana plants,1 smooth cheyanne pineapple. Bromeliad pup cuttings...Fireball, variegated galaposa(matchstick),1 tillansia hybrid that needs a good home.Some ice plant and maybe some orchid cuttings. I have but 1 final question about this whole thing. You mention food and drink. Enough for personal consumption? Enough to share or shall I break out the Chef Cordon Blue Army Battalion cookbook.

Here's the "guidelines" on how this works from last year. First year we had about 12 people, last year around 30, who knows how big it will be this year! Calling it a "swap/trade" has given new people the wrong idea, it doesn't really work that way. We do not trade or swap a plant for a plant. If you have nothing to swap, you can still come. If you only have three things to get rid of, it is conceivable you could go home with a dozen things. (This part not set up yet, I will do this as it gets closer to the date). First step...go to the exchange thread and post what you have and are bringing. You can bring anything garden related-plants, cuttings, seeds, books, magazines, pots, tools, etc. You'll also post what type of food/drink you can bring. Read all the other posts in that thread and see what others have to offer. If you see something that you really want, set up that trade now, privately. Then that item will be earmarked for you and you can pick it up at the swap. Pack up all your unwanted items even if you posted them on the exchange thread and no one asked for them. There will be non-Gardenweb people here who might want them and beginners who need everything who did not want to appear greedy by asking for all your stuff in the thread. Between 9-10 am show up and unload your stuff. Find a spot in the back or front yard and put all your items down in that spot. Make sure all the plants have labels on them, even if it's nothing more than a marker on a leaf or a piece of tape on a cup. After you've unloaded and found your spot, wander around and look at what everyone else has brought. Eat. Drink. Socialize. When everyone has arrived, we will then, one person at a time, go over our pile of giveaways and stuff. You will tell everyone what you brought, how to cultivate it, etc. If you want whatever is being talked about, raise your hand and it's yours. If more hands go up then there are items, rounds of Rock, Paper, Scissors determines who gets it. This is why you might get more than you came with. Plus there are always items that no one wants, and new gardeners can clean up at the end. After it's all done there will be more eating, drinking and socializing. Feel free to invite non-Gardenwebbers you might know who would be interested, just post on the exchange thread what they are bringing if you can. Lori

Moving day is 6 days away. By Sept 1 I should be ready for a swap day. I have moved SOOO many plants to the "new" house (a lot of them just rooted cuttings) I should have something to bring...

Ladies and Gents,
I have no clue on how many are coming! Should we have an RSVP or something? I'm planning on 20-50 guests touring my gardens and enjoying my hospitality. I'm going to grab a few folding tables and chairs from the campus and set up some refreshments and snacks. (Amber, maybe you can spearhead the refreshment/snack lists and we'll take it from there).

I think an RSVP would be helpful for you. I know some people have a hard time getting their emails from GW so if you would like us to email you direct we would need your email. Once you know how many are going and what kinds of snacks you would like to have, we can all volunteer to bring something. I would like to help out so just let me know what I can bring to share. Yesterday I had a hard time finding this post. It was on the third page cause there were lots of other posts on the discussion thread but on the Exchange thread there are not so many posts. Maybe you could start one on that thread.

Ariel, since you initiated this swap, I was wondering if you would like to give a tour through your garden?
Maybe set a fixed time after or before the swap for people like me that cannot get enough of seeing the yards of others? :-)

I would be more than happy to give a tour of my garden. Just please turn a blind eye to all the weeds. I desperately need to weed but it is just way too hot!

Anyone that tours my garden is more than welcome to take cuttings and possibly more.

Is anyone dieting? If not, I make a mean triple chocolate cake. Or I can be healthy and bring a vegi plate. You guys can decide.

Hey guys, sorry I have not been on here. I went to the mountains and the beach this week for a well needed vacation.

Anyways, I do not know what is needed for the swap. Maybe if a few people can bring some finger foods and a few more bring some bottled water or sodas, we should be good.

I will be bring a chocolate cake. Has anyone else said they are bringing anything? I haven't read all the post to know.

I went on mapquest to see how far I am from tampaarts and it says 30 minutes. (I am in Riverview) But I would think it would be more like 20 minutes. But I really don't know.
That might be to far for some of you guys. Just let me know. If you are interested my mom who lives a mile away said you all are welcome to take a tour of her garden also. Her garden is much prettier than mine. Her landscaping is much more mature than mine and very lush.

Tampaart, I am pretty sure I will be the before picture and you are the after picture. I have only lived in this house for 2 1/2 years and there was no landscaping except for a couple of trees. I have done alot but I still have a long way to go.

Airel, as we all have a LONG way to go - especially in this HEAT! Many of my babies have croaked from the high temps. Even my bamboos are swooning.

That sounds wonderful! I'll put your cooler with the other ones set up. It's going to be HOT and sunny, so we may seek shelter on the back porch or in the bamboo. We could always jump in the koi pond but I wouldn't recommend it (DW might now like it) grinning.

I don't know how many people will see this before tomorrow morning but I wanted to know if anyone is interested in hoyas. I'm not going to bring any unless I know someone is looking for them...however I'll take some cuttings if someone out there makes a request.

I'll bring something to eat ... "real food" but I don't know what right now.

I should brings some pictures of my new yard. It is kind of like Ariel's. We just moved in and there isn't much landscaping but there is a lot of LAWN! (for now)
