My hotmail account has been hacked

If you see a message from me,Juliadlf, don't open it. I can only assume someone is using my name and picking up addresses from here on GW.

I've closed my Hotmail account to prevent further hacking.
Ran my virus scan and it came up clean.

The only way I knew someone had hacked the account was because I was getting notices that Emails were Undeliverable. Knowing I didn't send out any emails for several months via that account, I knew someone had hacked the account.

Hi Julia, sorry to hear about that, I was waiting for an email from you.
Last year my Yahoo account was hacked or I don't know what happened, but someone opened accounts on Facebook and somewhere else using my yahoo info, and I was getting tons of emails from those sites. I ended up deleting the account.

check your settings, I have had a hotmail account for years and it does not do what you are saying, I currently have 20plus pages of read emails. I know it is time to clean it out but just have not had time. I have never seen one that deleted mail that way, has to be something in the settings. do you not like thunderbird? you can still use it. You could use another web client and let it collect your hotmail email for you and keep it there one I use is inbox.com and gmx.com. I like gmx.com quite a bit. I have it set up to get my email from other accounts and keep it there so I can view it all at one spot. To do that all you need to do is give it the username and password to the email account you want it to connect to and collect the email from.

Hotmail/Live/Outlook.com (all the same!) goes down. A lot. It has nothing to do with your end's equipment. If one of their servers goes south, it drags. It shows up badly because it keeps EVERYTHING except your message headers and preferences on its servers. That includes your attachments, mail, mail aliases, and address book. You rely on their servers to be hot and spicy, and they ain't always so. If you complain (I have) they'll get back to you after things are fixed and report no problem found.

I have some long passwords. Throw in capitals and you get another 26 options, then there are special characters. Most nowadays require at least one captital, one lower case and one special, and at least eight overal, and remembering these gets really tricky, but writing them down, and especially putting them in your browser's autofil, is the least secure of all! The long ones really work pretty well and are easier to remember. If you have to have a special and captital, it's not as secure as random, but you can set single rules, such as the seventh letter will be the only capital, and the fifth character will be an asterisk. If it's not someone who has watched you, or heard your keyboard, i.e., if it's just a 'bot, that's just about as secure as if they were random. The most secure password is long and totally random, but good luck remembering if you don't use it several times daily. And even then, you have to hope the hacker can't reverse engineer the encoding in the recognition system (that's nigh on impossible, but people do the impossible daily).

Do you usually read/send all your email using your browser? Or do you normally use a client that runs on your computer? Do these assumptions fit? (1) You normally read and send emails using a client (not your browser) without problems. (2) The only times you are asked for credentials is when you click an email link on a web page. If both those assumptions are true then maybe this is what's happening... The reason you have no trouble using your client is because it has your email credentials. You've never given your email credentials to your browser but it needs them to log you into outlook.com to send the email. For me, it would depend on who/what is asking. If it's outlook.com, I'd provide them. (A screenshot would probably be helpful) What might work as a test is this... Go to outlook.com, log in, then attempt to send the email using the link found in the "Contact Us". If it doesn't ask when you're already logged in, it was likely just outlook.com (or your browser) doing the asking. I'm not an expert though, especially not with Windows, and I only use webmail so take what I wrote with a grain of salt. Of course you could just copy the address, open your client and send the email. Might not learn anything that way though. :-)

OH YES! I got hacked about 3 years ago and it was a dad blasted mess!!! I couldn't even get into my account because they changed my password. Talk about being Mad!!! I've used the same account since I started on the WWW and I was not going to start a new one. It'd take nearly a week for me to get my account back and then within a day, they be back and change my password again. They were using my id to buy items on Ebay. So, I did finally change my Ebay email address to one that I only use for Ebay and that stopped them. Believe me, I've got a password with many numbers and letters that I don't think they will be able to get.

Good luck. You shouldn't have anymore probems if they deleted your account. Just make sure that they didn't buy stuff on Ebay and charge it to you.

This was another one of those times that God brought everything together for me. I hadn't bought anything on Ebay for a while when this happened so I hadn't checked it out. But I do my bank account auditing online and I caught them withing 10 minutes of getting access to my account. So, I didn't loose anything. The bank refunded me $40 that they did get access to in those 10 minutes, but I normally wouldn't have checked it then but I had to pay a bill and wnated to make sure I had enought money and found the hackers. They would have cleaned me out of my $118 that I had in my account in a short time if I hadn't checked.

Amazing how God takes care of us!!!

Well, at least I know now how it got hacked and the account is closed. Just got myself back with a new one again.

Pat: I'm sorry, but I'm glad your anti-virus software caught it. I'm not using that Hotmail account anymore and it was closed. I notified Hotmail as to what happened and got set up with a new account with them under another user name.

Well, so far, I haven't been hacked but a couple of years ago Photobucket was hacked. Not just my account but many...I'm glad you caught those people before damage was done that couldn't be repaired. God is so good to his children....Ellie
