It's so hard to restrain yourself! sniffle

You know, this whole backyard hybridizer thing is hard! It's really hard to not just buy the ones that the big dog's used to get thier keepers. I have to keep telling myself that I want to do my own thing, not try to get what someone else has got/did. I'm trying to stay away from the Carpenters (beautiful as they are) and come up with my own patterns. I do have some Capenter crosses from the auction, but they haven't bloomed. I love you Carpenters!!! *smile*

I mean, people in the North use Forestlake Raggamuffin because it works (to put teeth on everything). I'm trying NOT to use it just for that reason. I'm hoping a Klehm or two can help me out with that. It's just so hard not to use the flower that you know already works!

I did really well this year only sticking to my planned crosses. It sure does help to keep the number of seeds produced down. I also got rid of atleast 25 seedlings already that were mud. I'm more will bloom next year- I took about 30 to keep an eye on out which makes more growng room for the others. I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE WHAT THE ONES I'M OBSERVING DO NEXT YEAR!!! Note to self: This is going to be a long Winter...since it's barely Fall yet.

This whole hybridizing thing sure is a lesson in patience and control, isn't it? You don't realize how addicting it really is. It's a good thing I'm nowhere's near rich 'cause if I had the freedom to buy whatever I wanted, I'd have about 10 acres of seedlings!

Dani I started backyard hybridizing a few years ago. I'm trying really hard to only keep about 150 registered daylilies to get my seedling stock going. Once I start producing some of my own, I look to start reducing the registered ones. (Which will be difficult.)

What I am finding with my registered ones. Some don't perform the way I want so they will be passed on to family and others will replace them.

Since I don't have much help taking care of all the daylilies I'm trying to keep it under control and not put beds in the other acre of land we have but If I don't start getting rid of some of these seedlings I will have a field of daylilies.

I bought from the south my first 2 years to try to get some of those genetics up here in the North. I had rust both years. But now I do have some beautiful faces to work with. Some don't multiply as fast or have as high of a bud count. But I'm hoping that breeding them with stuff that do I'll get some nice northern daylilies.

I know we have many hybridizers in Ohio and in the North that are doing fabulous things but I'm with you I want to see what I can do.

I cheat and start things at my Dad's house because he has 5 acres of land and I don't. Then when I thin out the ones I want to watch, some stay there and some come to my house. I don't really try to do things others are doing. I find a flower I like and think gee this would be pretty if......and cross to something that has the if. I keep trying to get a near black with a gold edge, but no luck so far. And I want to make some big puffy doubles. When I first started, I really didn't plan anything-just dotted pollen around to see what stuck. Got some odd colored flowers as a result so now I'm more picky.

Oh I gave the causation I forgot to give the symptoms. I'm out in the yard looking at my trees yesterday. I know a few of the older ones are root-bound and I was planning on doing a root pruning and re-pot them in the Fall. Then I notice some summer die back on one of the older peaches and nectarine. The thought immediately occurred to me that it could be some kind of plant disease and I find myself thinking about what I will plant in their 25 gallon pots after I pull them. No research no thinking this may be normal for a root-bound tree sitting in 100+ deg temps in the full Arizona sun. Just what can I replace them with. I was actually happy to think two on my trees had some incurable disease because it would make my choices of what to get rid of easier. have I mentioned "Do a Dozen" yet? There are chores I know I need to do; I haven't forgotten them, I'm thinking of them and then decide they're just too overwhelming. Like folding the 5 loads of laundry DH did. So, I tell myself I only need to "do a dozen"--fold 12 things. Put away 12 things off the dresser. I get to define what a "thing" is--maybe it's all 7 pencils that count as one "thing." Or, if I'm feeling really overwhelmed or short on time, every single pencil counts as one, and I quit early. Usually I decide that socks don't count (though I do take them out and put them in their sorted piles, I just don't count them), and so 12 would have been 27 if I'd added in all the socks. Or I decide that anything I'm going to throw away off the dresser doesn't count, and only things being relocated count--speeds that up fast, too. Sometimes I realize I've accidentally gone over--oops, did 18, my bad! Sometimes I'll say, "gee that went fast, I'll do ANOTHER dozen."

Do-It Yourself Water Softener Installation?

If you are reasonably handy, yes, you can plumb a water softener. One issue is what type of piping (copper, PEX, CPVC, etc.) to use to make the connections. CPVC is probably the easiest, soldering copper takes a little skill but is doable (it's all in the prep work), and PEX requires tooling that you probably don't have and don't want to buy ($$$). You've run conduit as an electrician, so you should be able to transition to water-based conduit. lol! When you buy the softener, be sure to know what the pipe fittings/connections are going to be. Probably most accept threaded pipe or adapters, some are sweat-soldered. Plan for a bypass valve setup either on the softener or in the supply lines. Do the softeners come ready to install? Most don't, which requires one to assemble a few items and put the resin in the tank. It's not hard. You only need a twin tank softener if you will be using soft water in the middle of the night (when a typical softener regenerates). The computerized on-demand control valves can predict water usage and maintain enough reserve that you won't run out of soft water before the unit regenerates. Do get a softener that regenerates based on gallons of water used (demand type). It will save salt $$ in the long run. A good valve to consider is the Clack WS-1. Just google it for some softener vendors. It has a computer chip that does a lot of nice things for the softener. Fleck has a model to compete with the Clack (Fleck 7000??). A big issue is how big a softener do you need? Most softener vendors figure on 60 to 70 gallons of water usage per day per person. You will have to use some sort of adjustment factor to estimate your dog water usage (based on people). You probably want to bathe the dogs with soft water,but if you can replumb and use hard water for the dog drinking and kennel washdown water, I think you would be way ahead.

Your orange with red eye looks like one I got to bloom this year...I love it! Hopefully it will be a good performer!

My mom & dad have some land, but the soil is horrible. I'll just have to do with what I have for now...

I like them both for their own uniqueness. Both would be favorites, depending on my mood at the time.

I can't wait till I can start playing with seeds! At this time I am just building up a collection to see which ones I like best and which perform best. Everything is pretty temporary around here right now.

Lisa, your 2nd seedling is a very nice one. Gorgeous mix of colors.

So far, my "hybridizing" consists of gathering some bee pods and starting to sprout the seeds. But I can easily see myself getting to the point where I would want to start 1000s of seeds each year. I live in a townhouse with no yard and my daylilies are living in pots on the deck. So reality isn't aligning with my desires too well. :(
