Privacy Hedge?

I just moved to Ft. Myers from VT (zone 3!) and can hardly identify a single plant (except for sandspurs-ouch!). I'd like to put up some sort of natural privacy fence on the front of the property, but don't know where to even begin. I'd like it to be fairly fast growing, low maintenance, and preferably native. The bed will be about 500' x 5', so I can't afford to go to a garden center and buy pots at $50 each! Someone up the road has a nice border of some type of palm, about 20' high, that has multiple trunks that look like bamboo (any ideas what they're called?). This is interplanted with shorter bushier palms (I think Areca). Maybe something along this line would be nice, for variety. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Areca is great if you have the space, the big ones you are describing might be just old Areca (Hard to say with out pics) they will get quite big! You can check Craigslist they sell Areca's as low as $3-5 a pot, makes them very affordable, most places will come and put them in for you for just a few bucks more each! Good luck!

I have a mixed hedge of various plants on the dividing property line and can suggest one that has been outstanding: elderberry.
It is a native, the flowers are attractive (no smell) and the berries can support birds or make elderberry wine or jam :-).
What is especially nice in my small yard is that it doesn't get wide like many shrubs. Some of mine are now 9-10' tall and are a very good screen. At the base I have some smaller plants for color like pentas.

Also in the hedge are clumping bamboos, jatropha and Christmas cassia but none of those are 'hedge-like".

We have a row of sea grapes planted for their quick growth and ability to provide privacy. I have no complaints, but I do not mind a natural look. When it gets very very cold they do drop some leaves and thin out a little. We leave the leaves where they lie and let them naturally degrade and add compost and nutrients to the soil. The fallen leaves act as a very effective mulch against weeds. When they are in bloom so to speak they do drop grapes. However, we have a relatively micro tiny yard (hence the need for privacy) and none of that has bothered me. No matter how drastically I prune them back, they take it well. I have found them to be robust, tolerant, pest resistant, and highly effective for privacy. If you can prove to your satisfaction that the plants themselves and the grapes are not toxic to your animals (and as far as I know the grapes can even be used by humans to make jelly) I would highly recommend them.

Can you grow vines on it rather than a hedge? Not sure what would be evergreen in your zone though. Looks like Kiwi Vine is good but not evergreen.

A bay laurel at the University of Washington in Seattle was 44 ft. tall some years ago. But the first question is where you are located geographically and how Laurus nobilis does there - for starters its not especially cold tolerant. Otherwise this species has an established history of being used for hedging and topiary going back a very long time. Finally what your specific concept of "messy" consists of within this subject area will also be relevant - not only do broadleaved evergreens in general drop dead leaves (as do all trees and shrubs) they tend to do it during the growing season, and may do it for a long time (Magnolia grandiflora for instance). Instead of the one big dumping of all the leaves on a deciduous tree in autumn, that can be pounced on at that time. And not have to be dealt with again for an entire year. Spent flower parts and fruits are also shed each year of course. Again, same as with any kind of tree or shrub that produces these.

The photos are from too far away to be able to determine what weeds you might be dealing with.....if in fact they are weeds and not just natural woodsy undergrowth. You could start now if you like but I'd be inclined to wait until all that bare woody stuff leafs out and you can see what you are actually dealing with. If you need to be rid of it, cut everything back almost to ground level and then paint (not spray) the exposed stems with a brush killer like triclopyr. Waiting until the plants are in active growth is also the best application time for any herbicides as well. You may need a couple of repeat applications to get complete removal. And manually remove whatever herbaceous weeds you come across as they appear. After a good rain or watering the area well will make them easier to pull or remove. But unless you mulch heavily or replant with desirable woodland undergrowth species, the weedy stuff will eventually come back.

Welcome to the forum! You'll get lots of good ideas here.

My suggestion to newcomers to the state is to give yourself a few months before you make any major changes to your yard. I moved back to Orlando 11 years ago and instantly started planting. Part of it was wrong, part I hated within a year and part grew so large it took over the yard. LOL.
Instead, give yourself a little time and look at yards around you to decide what you like. There are so many options!

Can you post a couple pictures so we can see the space?

Do you have a fence? You can cover that for awhile with a vine. Then take some Arecas every 15 to 20 feet apart. It takes time to make a privacy hedge but that would be a good start. That's a lot of area to cover all at once.

Whoops! I was never good at numbers, just checked the fence measurements, and it's 200'. I like the idea of elderberrys, I'm hoping they sucker like other berries so I can keep filling in. I'm sure there'll be some Arecas there, too. There's going to be a farm fence along the front, so an vine would be good for a start. There's going to be wire horse fencing, what's a good vine that'll climb on that? I know some vines are picky, I planted English Ivy to cover a chain link fence, only to discover it wouldn't climb on the fence, only on the brick house till it dislodged the gutters!

Cocoplum is great. Grows fairly fast, reach height of 10-15 foot and native. They look fantastic when trimmed about 6-7 foot. And fairly cheap.

Oh, magnolia's look really mixed together with cocoplum.
Maybe distribute 3-4 little gem magnolias along the 200 foot. Nice..
