Black Spots

Hi all....

I was checking for damage on my Hoya's from the recent cold weather and unusual freezes that we had here in Florida and noticed some yellowing leaves. Ok that did'nt concern me too much as it was just a few leaves here and there. However while removing some of those yellow leaves from a var. Macrophylla I noticed some black spots as well. I did have vaporizers running during the freezes, but made sure the moisture did'nt accumulate on the plants. My question....am I dealing with a plant fungus and if so how do I treat it? I read somewhere here someone used Tinactin. I do treat my plants with BATS as well....

When ever I think I have a fungus problem on my hoyas I do use foot spay.I have also recommended foot spay to others who were happy that it worked.

Thank-you Cindy, Do you treat both sides of the leaf? And about how far away do hold the spray from the affected spot(s)?

Yeah didn't know that when I bought them on impulse. Saw 'em at Home Depot and was like, "Yeah, I'd like some of those." Been working down the row, planting the tomatoes, peppers, etc. Doesn't help that everything is clay! (See pic: http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/tomato/msg061246098308.html?15 ). I've just been winging this whole thing. I'm only planting one. Got a mound 4in high and about 3ft wide with a lot of manure worked in and about 2 shovel-fulls of Miracle Gro garden soil. I've read variously to fertilize because they are heavy feeders and others that say don't fertilize a lot if at all (I forget why not), so I'm taking a middle road (I know that's a logical fallacy, the middle road is not necessarily the truth, but it seems like a good compromise is this case). Wondering if I should peel away as much of the peat pot as I can (after soaking it ofc) since peat is very acidic; I dunno about peat pots though. The last tomato I planted though had a lot of roots growing through the peat pot, guessing it probably true for these guys.

It looks and sounds like you have two types of pests - brown scale are the round-ish blobs. The tiny bugs, along with the speckling on the leaves, sound like spider mites. Google those names to see if they match up along with various ways to eliminate them. Brooke

I didn't think about watering it that way I'll do it like that. A couple of the others I ordered have brown spots too but not nearly as bad. And I have a good draining mix I'll move them to. Yes it was just a couple of days after I received them that the spots showed up. I received them on the fifth and noticed spots on the seventh. It was my first time ordering online and a lot of them had leafs fallen off or were very droopy and miscolored. They were set against each other and falling out of their pots. It was a mess. I even received a wrong succulent. They had told me to water them set them by filtered light and wait a week for them to get their strength back. I don't think I will order from them again. These poor succulents are going through too much. Thank you all for your wonderful advice! You have helped me so much!

I give the whole leaf,both sides that is infected and sometimes the leaves around the sick leaves.I am not sure how fare away but maybe 1 foot. I spray very sparely?Very light dusting.I leave it on about 10 to 14 days. I then spray with plain water to wash clean. I will repeat if I see it spread to more areas but usually one time is all that is needed.
I think my kerrii needs to have a treatment.
I have also read that some people also use a few drops of Cinnamon oil in there spray bottle.I was thinking about given this a try then there's no need to wash the leaves 10 days later.

Plain old cinnamon works as well but you don't need to treat unless the spots are getting larger or spreading. Sometimes when plants get cold the cells collapse and you will get a sunken patch where a secondary fungal infection can occur. If the rot is wet powdered cinnamon is one of the easiest and best things to use.

Hi LGS, I also suffered some cold damage mostly yellowing leaves on two of my Hoyas...Variegated Macro and Obscura. I lost a lot of leaves on both...so far I've not noticed the black spots. Good luck with yours and hope it will be just fine with the treatment.

Thanks for the advice using the cinnamons, I have both on hand....the tiny black spots don't appear to be wet and rotting. Just tiny black poke a dots on some of the leaves.

Some damages to the hoyas that I've covered outside. Loosing lot of leaves. ; (

Jan, good luck to you also...I have some serious issues with a lot of my outdoor plants too, only 3 hoyas but many others that have suffered a lot of damage, covering them I guess wasn't enough :o(
