Minis in troughs, dish gardens, other containers

I've been planting all of my new minis straight into the ground each spring. With few exceptions (Cameo & Tattoo), so far, so good. I know some like to pot them up for the first year, others keep their minis and dwarf hostas in containers permanently.

How far apart do you space the babies? Pictures would be a major plus!

Do you favor a variety forms and textures, or tend to plant "families" (i.e. Mouse Ears cousins, Cheatin' Heart, Illicit Affair and the rest of that misbehavin' bunch)?
