Planted dish drainer and other things

Shysue inspired me with her planted dish drainer, so I had to try it also. I'm getting ready for a big garden show on June 13/14, so I am planting everything in sight. Here's the drainer:

And an old lunch box:

And lots of misc - old shoes, teakettles, and my fairy garden pans. They will be adorned with lots of little items closer to time - like benches, fairies, birdhouses, mini clay pots, animals, etc. I planted about 20 pans yesterday.

You have definitely been a busy lady! All of them look just great! What a big variety of sedums, cacti, etc. Especially like the dish drainer idea!!

Very Cool, Arlene! So I assume you are selling the pans at this Garden Show? How much are you charging? I imagine they will be HOT sellers!! Kathy

Hoya Kerri looks delicious wrapped around a U shaped trellis. Alternatively, if it is too large/not bendy enough to wrap around a trellis, you can make cuttings and stick them directly in the pot with the "mother" plant! They make many different sizes of U shaped trellises, so you shouldn't have an issue finding one big enough!

We've been in for 4 1/2 months now and overall are very happy with how our new home turned out. Things I love: Wood floors - Ours are 4" white oak, site finished in a medium stain color, satin finish(not shiny). Dover white laquer painted woodwork, mouldings, and cabinetry. We have stained cabinets in a couple of bathrooms, and I'm glad I didn't go stained in the kitchen and rest of the house. The stained acts like a dust magnet and washes out the paint color on the walls. But most of all, white wood against painted walls and hardwood floors just makes me happy.:-) Love my kitchen. Thank you kitchen forum! Definitely pay a visit over there if you're just getting started. -It turned out beautiful(white custom cabs, arched hood, wood floors) -Lots of well placed lighting all on dimmers -Functional, large layout with specific work zones -Danze faucets and pot filler -Silgranit sinks(love the big single basin and the round prep!) -Bosch ovens -Dacor 36" gas cooktop -Kitchenaid DW and Fridge -Giallo Ornamental granite -Microwave built into the island -Trash pullout -Tons of deep drawers instead of cabinet doors -Step in pantry Smart Strand carpet - feels and looks great - LOVE IT!!! Love our huge paved, curvy driveway and walkways. Lots of room for the kids to ride bikes, scooters, and play basketball. Huge covered porches front and back Exercise room off of master for treadmill and weights Walk in attic access from upstairs Huge bonus room upstairs Big laundry room with 2 washer and 2 dryer hookups, quartz folding countertop, deep stainless sink, and plenty of storage. Love that the dryers vent right outside, not up through walls and then to the roof like our last house. Makes cleaning the duct a huge pain and cuts down on effiency. Sound system with speakers throughout and on back porch Paint colors - Tobacco Road(main), Dover White(woodwork) Lots of lighting throughout almost all on dimmers Schlage door hardware and deadbolts Love being out in the country on a little land with tons of trees and a pond. Peaceful and lots of room for the kids to play and explore. Things I'd do differently - Insulate wall where upstairs bath plumbing runs downstairs for sound reduction. Put in sprinkler system - On the list to do next spring Wish we would've upgraded to satin or eggshell paint in the bonus and kids rooms. Went with flat to save money figuring we could always repaint later.

Well, thanks guys for compliments about my kitchen. It's been 5 years now & we still love it and are very happy with the performance of everything we have. The material I lined my cupboard with is the Hafele Undersink Matting and it's worked out very, very well. We cut the strips to size & then hot glued it together. It's fitted exactly into the cabinet. We actually like this set up very much & use it all the time for very wet items. We've not had any damage after all these years. The Hafele product keeps the moisture away from the cabinet. We love having our counterspace available with the added benefit of hiding all the drying plates, glasses, and utensils. I'd thought about upgrading to a more professional set up, but decided against it b/c this setup works just fine and I'm not messing with the cabinet structure itself at all. Why bother, I figure. I haven't owned a dish drainer in years--in fact not since we moved into this house almost 12 years ago. Before that, the drainers we had were always really ugly, so perhaps that fed my aversion to them. We hand wash pots and pans, stoneware, and some glassware, but there are seldom more than a few pieces unless we're entertaining. We have always just put a towel on the counter. With the new kitchen, we had runnels installed in the counter and we have a grid in the sink. We place dishes directly on the runnels to dry, and if there are just a few small items, we dry them on the sink grid. So now, we don't even use the towel, unless the 'load' is particularly large.

Kathy - last year the pans sold anywhere from $18-$30 - depending on size. The larger ones on my flickr photo site will be at least $35 probably. Saw similar ones at a greenhouse the other day that were priced at $49.99. I have a ton of money wrapped up in plants alone! It sure adds up quick.

luvstoclick...You certainly have been busy! Your fairy gardens are so original! Luv them! The dishdrainer is so very cute and I'm sure will sell right away!

Do you grow "hen and chicks?" That would save some money cause they multiply so quickly once they are started! Are you using "herbs" for the other plants? Do you grow sedum? I have one that goes everywhere & it looks like one in your pans. Do you drill holes in the bottom of the pans? And line them with something? Just curious...as they would make great gifts! I can see you would have lots of money and time involved. They are wonderful! Great work & have fun at your garden show! Please share pics of your table again...luv your displays! Jeanne S.

Thanks all - definitely having fun with this. Jeanne - yes, I do poke holes in the bottom of the pans - sometimes I hate to do that with the enamel pans, but mainly use chipped ones I pick up at yard sales and auctions. I use a small nail for the holes, so I don't bother lining the pans. Yes, I do grow hen and chicks and sedums - I have a rock bed full of this stuff! (planted with the intention of not having to buy so much every year). Picture below. But by this time of year, some of the sedums are really big - too big to use in the pans. Seems they don't grow so big in the pans because of not much dirt. I use mostly perennial ground covers in my pans because they can take it dry if people forget to water them and also because they can sit out all winter and will come back again in the spring. This year I found some other miniature plants to use - a yarrow that only gets a few inches tall, rock cross and a few others that stay small. The true alpine miniature plants are really expensive to use for this many pans. I use different thymes and mosses also. I spent another $50 at the greenhouse the other day! Better to go several times and buy in batches so you can't really remember how much you spent for the whole season!

For the fairy pans, I always recommend bringing the accessories (decorations) in for the winter, but the pans can stay outside. They come back with a vengeance - most always need to do some trimming and thinning in the spring.

Kudzu - some of those baby shoes were really too nice to cut holes in and fill with dirt, but I did it anyway. StrideRites - real leather.....ouch..... But I only paid $1 or less for a pair (thrift shops, garage sales, etc.) I did keep one tiny pair because they were too cute to ruin - what am I going to do with them? I don't know.....

I love all your succulents! The fairy gardens are adorable and well worth $35. Love the lunchbox too! You have been a busy bee. No wonder we haven't seen you on the forum in a while! Keep up the great work!
