i got my first mealies and i'm freaking out!

Okay, so far, I've only found them on the H. kanyakumariana . . . there were two, and some webbing. I picked them off, then sprayed with my neem/water/ivory soap mixture. I checked the plants that were near the H. kanya, and so far, no signs. What now?

Well, to be on the safe side, I suggest that you send your entire hoya collection to me and I will take care of the problem for you. (:o)

If you can find any Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub (BATS) at Home Depot or Lowe's, buy it and treat ALL of your plants whether you see any mealies on them or not. Just because you cannot see any mealies does not mean the mealies are not there.

Now keep an eye out for more each time you water and be sure to check the area where you plants are because there can be egg cases on pots, shelves etc.
New growth is where you will find the newly hatched mealies so watch for them while they are still small. As long as you keep spraying at the first sign of a problem they should not get out of hand. If you have any larger plants that you can't move to water, spray and inspect be extra vigilant about checking for mealies that may be hiding.

Like Denise always recommends it is good to connect with your plants each time you water them, look them over for any problems and catch them early.

You've got it about right, but in case you haven't gotten the cement board yet, Ditra doesn't cost all that much more. Matter of fact, most contractors won't even charge extra to switch from one to the other. As for the thinset under the cement board, it most certainly IS required. Whichever brand you're using-- Hardi, Wonderboard, Durock-- whichever-- go to their website and check the installation instructions. There's a good reason for it, too. THe thinset isn't there to adhere the cement board to the subfloor. That's what the screws are for. It's there to cushion it-- elimintate the paper thin void that would exist otherwise, which would allow vibration between the layers and end up drastically shortening the life of the floor. To answer your question about the 3/4" and Ditra, yes, you could have, so long as this is ceramic and not stone we're talking about.

I've calmed down since yesterday and with a third of the stone down, I'm starting to like it. I have walnut and oak in the rest of the house, which prompted my decision for stone in the kitchen, breakfast room and laundry/back entrance. When I saw it on the showroom floor, the salesman pointed out the their floor was three years old and had a beautiful patina. So, I guess I will love my floor in three years. Limestone etches? Oh well, it will match my marble counters. This kitchen remodel is taking so much longer than planned, I think I have kitchen remodel fatigue syndrome. Every time I see a finished kitchen post, it gives me hope.

Joe, I would trust you with my life. However...(ha...) I had Corian installed as a replacement counter in a house I owned about a million years ago now. And I could not believe the mess that created! It seemed like there was dust, random particles of unknown crap, and tiny bits of drywall debris all over the place...including in every top drawer I had and all over my silverware. If you saw you can install a countertop without making that huge of a mess, I believe you. However, you and I both know the average countertop installer out there is not nearly as attentive to details as you are. I actually took it as a good sign that they asked her to remove top drawers and cover contents - it means they're at least aware of the fact that they're going to make a mess. LOL.

Gotcha . . . unfortunately, the BATS is out of the question. I have a lovely flock of parrots, and I don't want to risk their safety. But I will spray regularly with the neem (and I'm a lousy shot, so the shelved and pots all get sprayed, too). Thanks for the suggestions. :)

Sorry to hear that Carolyn, I HATE mealies. Unfortunately we've all been there. If its not one bug its another :o( The two Mikes have given you great advise. Hope you have it under control soon. Neem is good stuff, its just not the fastest (and long lasting) treatment out there, so you will have to stay on top of it and spray them often. Best of luck getting rid of them.

Hi I would like to suggest making a batch of garbage enzyme.It takes 3 months to make so it will not help now but if you make now it will be ready for spring. Its very safe and will not hurt your birds or animals.I started making a batch at the beginning of this month.I used oranges and apple peels.This is were I got the info from.

How weird Carolyn, I was just going to post a message about something I found on one of my plants and I saw your thread.

Im going to look into the recipe cpawl sent, but in the meantime I need to know what I have so I think I'm gonna start a new thread. . .

Well, I've rechecked EVERY plant in the house. Still don't see any more of the little nasties! hahaha Maybe I got lucky and found them early. But, for now, the H. kanyakumariana is isolated in the bathroom. :( Miss looking at the little guy (referring to the plant NOT the bugs).
