Sometimes you get a below crown proliferation, so not all hope is lost.

I hate it when something like that happens. I was dividing a daylily when I broke off the fan that I was going to give someone. It had no roots, so I had to pitch it and separate another section.

Don't beat yourself up too hard yet, although I know it is very frustrating. Give it a chance to pop up next spring.

Vickie - exact same thing happened to me yesterday while dividing for a trade. I broke off not 1 but 2 at the crown. I planted the roots anyway because I'm hoping something will grow from it anyway. I guess it depends on the cultivar.
The one that was clear broken off from that daylily farm in CT - well, I planted it anyway and the fan started growing new roots and the roots started growing a new fan. Now, I don't know if the roots from the fan will be big enough to make it over the winter, but I am so surprised it survived at all.

So, all is not lost! Never throw them out - plants them and water them and see what happens.

I figgure I have from now until the fall to see if anything grows. If not, I guess I will be ordering UP AGAINST THE SUN again from Richard Norris as I really love it. Rotton luck because it did not bloom last year and now at the very least it will be set back for next year.

Oh sorry to hear that Rita, I've had daylily mishaps and I get mad at myself when I do it too.

Rita, I am so sorry that happened.Accidents do happen, but you really did not need that.You have worked so hard,moving things.Maybe it will grow anyway,and make some new plants for you.

I wanted to switch it with PRIMAL SCREAM as I had UP AGAINST THE SUN there with the mid bloomers and wanted it with the later blooming ones. So now I have them switched but I honestly don't know whats going to happen with it. I fear the worst :-((

I wouldn't totally give up. I was having to move an iris that was crowding Barbara Mitchell, back in May. Somehow, the shovel just slid over & I sliced right into Barbara, cutting the top off of half the clump. The crown was cut into, but I really thought it was going to be ok. It was, it started growing & bloomed this summer. Not great, the blooms were smaller & shorter than the half I didn't cut into, but I was surprised. The foliage didn't look like it had any crown on it, but there must have been just enough. I put it in water just as an experiment. It grew roots. It did ultimately die, my own fault because I just planted it next to the rest of the clump when I thought it had enough roots. I should have potted it up & babied it a bit. I was just surprised that it did that much.

I have broken them off in the past too, I usually go to the shade somewhere and just stick the shovel into the ground, not dig a hole, just make a slit type opening, put the foliage in it and firm it back up, I have about a 75% rate of getting them to root, but they must be in the shade.

Rita, if you broke it at the crown, you can set the fan/scape you broke in the ground and keep it watered. If any part of the crown is there, it can survive...So sorry that you have to wait again as I know how that is!!! Ellie

I already threw the rootless fan out :-(( It went out with the garbage pickup and its gone this morning. I didn't think it was any good for anything. I planted the part with the roots but of course it has no fan. I forsee Richard Norris getting more of my money this winter for a new daylily in the spring. Sigh.

You might not have. I have, sitting here on my desk in fact, just a small piece of crown and a few roots. I picked this up off the ground at my club's sale to the public last Saturday. Yup, I've had this daylily thingy sittin' out since Saturday. It would have been swept up along with the broken leaves, bit of roots and etc. after the sale had ended, so I had one of those oh-why-not reactions. I fully expect this piece to grow, and I will certainly have bloom in two years, very possibly even next year.

This happens to me a lot while moving, washing, dividing the large clumps from the display garden. As hard as I try not to damage them while dividing, sometimes the roots are so tight that it just happens.

I always plant the root back in with the rest of the divided clump. As I am replanting each variety I am planting 2fan div's into a "clump" form.

I've had most of the broken fans regrow and some put up several new fans in place of the one lost.

Yes, they are smaller and probably won't bloom next season but they are increased so when they do bloom it will be better.

Someone (maybe me) stepped right in the middle of a daylily and broke it all the way down to the crown. I gave it up for lost, but I see now that it is sending up new growth. Don't give up on it - it may just fool you and revive.
