more rain! picture of the new swamp

It is still raining, no wait, that word doesn't paint an accurate picture so let me say it's pouring with thunder and lightning, every single day! I had standing water over half the back patio for about six hours yesterday. The grounds so saturated there's just no place for it to go. But my neighbors have it worse---

This picture was taken this morning...it's been over 12 hours since we had rain and they still have standing water and a nice muck pit. When the rain stopped last night this whole area was solid standing water, it was over the street and from my fence to their mobile home. One of my cats got caught on their side of the "lake" and cried and cried cause she couldn't figure out how to get to me without going through the water. She eventually just jumped and ran through it but was wet above her belly height, that's how deep it was.

I finally pulled all my cacti inside yesterday, there just isn't any other way to protect them from so much rain.

I sympathize! As my mom used to say, be careful what you wish for! Remember the dry spring? lol
The swale that runs along the back of my lot has had standing water for days.
Some of my crown of thorns look unhappy, but fortunately, most of my cacti and succulents are in pots and under cover.
Your poor kitty - hope she got a nice treat for her effort!

Greetings all ~ I hope the rain has let up for all of you. Our claw foot tub ended up with about 12". I did finally head off to work, and the road in front of our cottage was up over the sidewalk. We only had a little rain after the mornings deluge, and today we've had nothing but gray skies and a few sprinkles. The sun even came out late this afternoon. We did have one little leak in our cottage at the wall/ceiling edge. Trini ~ I hope your leaks didn't cause too much damage to your home and that you get the roof fixed soon as it's dry enough to do so. Yes, we did pray for rain, so... we got a little more than we asked for. Setting up rain barrels, painting the house and other such things might stop it, then again they might not. We haven't had rain in so long, we didnt' know what to make of it, or how to handle it. I did get my blue bottle bouquet back up this morning, driving stakes into the ground inside the terra cotta vase, to keep it from happening again. The terrible hurricane like storm that we had Wed. night blew it over. Not one bottle was broken though, in fact most of them collected water. :-) Accu-Weather says we're supposed to have more rain over the next couple of days, we'll see. We were supposed to get some today also but didn't. The weather people aren't always right. Felix ~ I will go out and take some flower 'universes' for you. We managed to get 3 hours of work in the garden yesterday and today. We had pots to wash up, lawn furniture to clean, Four batches of potting soil to make in the wheelbarrel and the drizzle actually helped in that regard. Maple seedlings in the hundreds that had to be pulled out of mulch and a layer of new mulch added to a pathway. I also remembered to sow more seed right before the rainy cloudy weather started and that gave me a head start on them without having to fuss over them with the hose. Today the rain cleared out and some sun came out in the afternoon and we were able to plant out a couple of tomato and pepper plants. Although it's pretty cold out there and will get colder tonight, I just couldn't wait any longer. I still have a half dozen waiting to go in and they will come into the house for the night, but will probably be planted tomorrow. Still haven't planted pots of annuals, but the pots are clean and filled with new soil, ready to go. We even got the lawn mowed this afternoon after some sun and a lot of wind dried things out enough. Tomorrow is supposed to be sunny and warmer and weeding and mulching in shady parts of the garden is on the schedule. All together we had 2 inches of rain over the past few days. VERY happy to get that, we needed it!! I'd really rather work on a sunny day with a little breeze, and dry air with temperatures in the high 60s. But how many of those do you get? There's just too many things to do in the spring, to wait for comfortable weather. I want to get it all done before it starts getting hot and humid. Which will probably start next week, at this rate. Tell me more about salvia black and blue. I have May Knight and it blooms early then not much the rest of the summer. There are many many kinds of salvia; I would be interested in having some other kinds if they have good qualities. The red annual salvia is one of my dependable annuals. Why don't you put your bugs on the name that insect or name that animal forum. I have used name that plant and they are quick. It is fun to grow a huge tree from a baby. I have a sugar maple that I pulled up near my neighbors pond that is now a big tree. I would be sick if something happened to it though; it is my baby.

Chicago has gotten lots of rain as well as two hail storms and Monday there were tornado warnings. It has been a cold and wet spring again like last year.this is probably our new climate. I'm still waiting to get my sweet potatoe slips and this is the end of June! My strawberries are the worst they mold on the vine from too much rain and humidity. My garden is mulched think with organic hay and the slugs are having a feast. I can't really fight them when it is so wet, I hand picked some today and yesterday a whole can full! My potatoes look good that's about it. My garden is way behind anyway due to late cold weather.

That's exactly where my mind went Carolb!

I can certainly empathize crueltyfre. I'm having a hard time distinguishing between my swale and the canal right now - they seem to want to join together. People in the neighborhood called my house the "home on the hill". Now it's more like the home with a moat! Unfortunately the mosquitoes love it and can cross it as they please :(

I've lost half my garden to drowning. Ah well - it's time to plant for Fall so I guess it's all good. :-) Hope we dry out soon, but our forecast does not look so good. It was really coming down y-day!

Wow Lori, what a puddle. I came to see how everyone was faring with all this rain.

I too have lost so many plants. I had lost interest in the garden for a couple of years (life getting in the way) and became rejuvenated after spotting a hummingbird visiting a few weeks back.

Since then I have put in trays of vinca, most of which have died and some plants I purchased through mail-order. Five out of eight have perished. Ouch!

At this moment I am sitting in front of my window as a torrential downpour is going on outside. This is the second storm today.

On the bright side, I cut up a milkweed stem, stuck them all in the ground about a week ago and most of them are showing signs of leaf growth! I only recently learned on this board you can do that.

Hopefully those who need the rain so badly will get some soon.
