Look what happened when I bought a desk!

I have always wanted a small desk for my library window. I thought that as I sit at my desk and occasionally gaze out at my butterfly/hummer garden I might have a better opportunity to appreciate all its winged visitors.

It took 3 months from purchase to finally have my desk delivered yesterday (long story) but within minutes I spotted this little beauty visiting the Dwarf Powderpuff!

Being productive (literally) just went out of the window! But I love it!

IMHO.. shrubs NEVER need fertilizer .... too much nitrogen.. in the NPK ... or a soil that holds the wrong type of nitrogen.. will cause long leggy greenery .. while sacrificing flowers ... e.g we put high nitro fert ... like 30-3-3 on the grass.. to make it grow fast tall and very green .... if that describes the change in the shrubs you are not appreciating.. then that might be part of the problem ... leaving stock in pots.. for extended periods will also affect them ... but i understand that sometimes life gets in the way of what should be planted timely ... sound like you are kind of new to the garden ... one thing to learn ... or a few ... only annuals require you to be in a hurry ... since they live one year.. they need food and lots of care .. there is immediate gratification ... perennials less... less food .... same water .... somewhat deferred gratification.. it might take it a year or two to get situated in your garden ... and really put out the show ... shrubs.. trees... conifers ... these things can live 100 years ... THERE IS NO IMMEDIATE GRATIFICATION ... OTHER THAN THE PURCHASE ... some can take decades to begin to show off ... to their utmost potential ... especially after transplant ... i tend to agree with the nurseryman .... they were grown to their utmost perfection for sale .. and they are adjusting to your yard... be patient.... and keep them properly watered.. and back off the fert .. and they will reward you.. somewhere down the line ... i waited 7 years to get a flower off a flowering cherry ... and i complained like heck ... and it eventually came through .... good luck ken

Thanks, the sink came with the house. Well, I see cars almost everyday - parked at that ugly white metal building with the red roof across the field. The neighbors put that up five years ago in their back yard for a son to have a car detailing business. Ugh. This Spring I planted a Profusion crabapple tree to block my view of it from the kitchen window. It will take maybe 10 -15yrs. but it will be worth it.

Karen, here is Sue's Ribs. EVeryone that has made them raves about them. Roadhouse Grill Baby Back Ribs 2 large racks pork baby back ribs salt coarse ground black pepper SAUCE: 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1/4 cup minced fresh onion 1 1/2 cups water 1/2 cup tomato paste 1/2 cup brown sugar 2 tablespoons honey 1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce 1 3/4 teaspoons salt 1 teaspoon liquid smoke flavoring 1 teaspoon Jim Beam whiskey 1/4 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper -- coarse 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder 1/8 teaspoon paprika To make the ribs, cut each large rack of ribs in half so that you have 4 half-racks. Sprinkle a light coating of salt and a more generous portion of coarse pepper over the top and bottom of each rack. Wrap the ribs in aluminum foil and bake in a preheated 300 degree oven for 2 1/2 hours. As the ribs cook, make the sauce by heating the oil in a medium saucepan over medium/high heat. SautÃ¯Â¿Â½ the onions for 5 minutes or until they start to brown. Add the remaining ingredients and bring mixture to a boil then reduce heat and simmer for 1 1/4 hours, uncovered, or until sauce thickens. Remove from heat and set aside until the ribs are ready. Preheat your barbecue grill. When ribs are finished in the oven, the meat should have pull back about 1/2-inch from the cut-ends of the bones. Remove the ribs from the oven, let them sit for 10 minutes or so, then remove the racks from the foil and put them on the grill. Grill the ribs for 3 to 4 minutes per side. They should be slightly charred in a few spots when they're finished. Brush barbecue sauce on the ribs while they're grilling, just before you serve them. Craigslist, yes! They live 5 minutes from my house. Not brass, I believe it's resin which I'm ok with. I certainly would have paid a lot more from someplace like Home Goods I think it's pretty and I love the leaf detail. My house tends to be dark and adding large mirrors across from the windows helps move the light around. An old, chippy wood framed mirror in my kitchen eating area. An old pic of the dining room, but that mirror reflects the chandelier and the living room window behind me. That was found in the garage of our old house! This is the "Snow White" mirror in my daughter's room. Looks orange-y, but it's an aged gold. And the mirror that was in the living room before the new purchase. A gift from my mom :) I can't wait until we decide on a layout for our bathroom and I can shop for the one(s) that will go in there!! All I know is that they will be big.

That is a wonderful photograph, perfectly framed and gives us the exact feeling that we are looking out your window.

At dusk a few evenings ago I saw shapes around my pink powderpuff that could only be hummers, too far to be seen from inside the house. Now I can be sure that's what they were after reading your post.

Do you think they like red/orange dwarf poinciana flowers too? One is in bloom on the side yard (unobservable from house) and one close to the front window will be blooming soon.

sis3, where do you live? I assumed the hummers are gone from my area (St Pete)... but I do have a blooming dwarf sunshine mimosa (I think that was the label-name).

Hi Irma! We are in the north east of the county - in Tarpon Springs.
I am surprised by the flowers of choice for the hummers. This year they like the Mexican Petunias, the Powder Puff and of course the Firecracker. Last year they loved the Sweet Almond!

Denise I have no dwarf Poincianas so I can't answer your question but I'm sure others who grow them will chip in here.

Cool! I saw a hummer flit by the other day, but haven't seen him since. I need something to entice him, but the maintenance guy says if you put out feeders, the wasps get into them. I'm allergic to wasps, so I may have to find some sort of shade flower to use instead.

My dwarf powderpuff is in shade and blooms constantly.

I have powderpuffs in different places, sun, shade, etc. I love them, obviously - I've seen the little hummers on my begonias, but I expect they visit the powderpuffs too. So cute!
