The rats at my house dig holes in the ground (which make it easy to know where to put the trap). I wonder if different kinds of rats make different abodes?

If they build nests as fast as they reproduce, it probably took about 30 minutes. You need more snakes!! Or maybe an owl.

I had a nest WITH 3 BABIES under the hood of my car last month or so!
(It took her only a few hours to build her nest.)

I started up the car and backed it out of the garage in order to wash it.
I began hosing down the hood when I noticed 'fabric' hanging down underneath the front of the car.
Opened the hood and..........TA-DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!
There was a cup-like nest built from dried plant material and antique baby doll dresses that had been stored in a box in the garage.
When I started the car, the fan belt pulled some of the fabric into it.
I had a hard time freeing up the material from the belt but removing the nest wasn't too difficult. *sniff

BTW: I had just recently thrown some old wild bird seed into one of my yard waste cans in that garage.
Evidently, Momma Rat smelled it and thought "Hmmmmm.....food, shelter AND nesting material right at hand!"

OMG lellie, antique baby doll dresses? I used to make porcelain repros before I had kids, many moons ago. I would've had a stroke right then and there!

My car is always parked outside and the nest had alot of my straw mulch in it.

Wow!! What a find! I'm always worrying about the neighbor's cats getting under the hood, but never thought about rats. UGH!! I guess my neighbor's cats are good for something. lol.

Rats chewed a hole in my wooden garage door! Grrrr! We now have a metal door and several less cardboard boxes! The plastic bins were all fine. I love nature, plants and birds and butterflies... but rats (and squirrels) ...not so much

We had one in our Rv engine, but believe it was a squirrels nest, as we have quite a few here at home, and also as we camp in state prks, for weeks at a time...

Years ago my mother in law discovered a cat in her engine. It was of course after she started the car and heard a horrible noise. It took her a while to clean the remains out. Yuck.

I use to have a cat that was excellent at catching them. She would bring them into the house so she could rip them to shreds at her leisure, leaving me horrendous and gruesome things to clean up. One time, I guess one got away from her. All I know is I started smelling something odd at the stove. Thinking some form of food had gotten burned or soured or moldy, I pulled out the stove and started searching for the source of this smell. Turned out the rat had crawled up in the area over the oven and underneath the stove top. It then ripped up the insulation that wrapped around the oven part and made a nest for itself there. How in the world that thing did not get burned every time I used any part of that stove is beyond me. We had to drag the whole thing outside, then bang on it repeatedly till we saw it finally run off. Repair people told us you cannot fix the insulation, and it wasn't safe to use it as is. They also told us this is really common!
