The daylilies look nice but this time around Zeke the lovely Koi takes favorite :-)) I would NEVER have seen that grey fish there in the pond without you pointing it out. Even so I can barely make it out, looks like a shadow in the pond.

I bet your pond is going to be really lovely after you make it larger and the fish will really enjoy it. I do wish I had room for a bigger pond but just not possible. At least I do have something. And three frogs this year so they like my pond! Do you have many frogs?

There are actually four big gray fish "hiding" in that pond!! You have to really look to see them in person, much less see them in a photograph. The smallest one is about ten inches long. Zeke is so big now that it still surprises me when I actually stop and look at him.

I have many smaller frogs here, but, thankfully, no bull frogs. When I soak daylilies, if the pan is under the tree, there is usually a frog in the pan when I empty the water out. I never see them until they hop out and onto the ground.

Every year in May we have tadpoles covering the sides of the pond. The noise the frogs make when they "sing" is quite loud.

When the grandkids were younger, they would get into major trouble, since they thought they just had to catch some tadpoles and their mothers knew somebody would get wet doing it. But they would sneak out and do it anyway.

Now there are two more grandchildren, little boys, one and three years old that will be sure to want to catch tadpoles of their own...and Noah, the 3 year old, won't mind wading into the pond to do it. In fact, he will probably try to swim in the pond.

DH and I stopped and picked up a box turtle today that was trying to commit suicide on the main road. I released him in the yard, but DH assures me the turtle will not stay in the yard. That's too bad. It would be kind of nice to have a pretty box turtle (the shell not the rest of him is pretty) crawling around the yard.

Expanding the pond is a lot of work, but it will be pretty when it is finally finished. If it ever cools off down here, the work will go faster. 97 is the predicted high today. At least it is less than a hundred.

Rita, You have a lovely pond even if you can't make it bigger due to space considerations. The rocks and the fish make it so attractive and it is a nice spot to relax and enjoy the yard and all the work you have put into it.

I actually have three ponds if you can call them that. My first two were (still are) 35 gallon ponds that I can't keep anything but afew feeder fish in because the racoons use them as wading pools and go fishing. Past years I had always had a frog or two up in the same in ground in the back yard, this year no frogs up there. The other is above ground (made to be that way) that never gets frogs.

The racoons have been very naughtly this year, this morning about a forth of the water is gone from that upstairs in ground. That means more than one racoon went wading overnight. Its only 12 inches deep, so they can walk in there.

This is the first year I have had baby fish and no tadpoles so maybe next year. I do really love the ponds, even the little ones, but especially the 'big' 300 gallon inground. I will go watch the fish swimming around at least once a day but usually many more times than that.

Zeke is gorgeous! I tried koi in my pond, but they didn't survive the winter. Goldfish seem to do fine & I used to have some lovely calico goldfish. This spring though I had a couple of frogs that seemed to focus on eating the pretty ones. I had several gray goldfish, but I guess they are harder to see.

Kay, It is 101 here right now with a heat index of 112.Very humid out. I love your pond and that big KOI. I miss my pond I had, but I was not willing to share it with snakes.The racoons was in it nearly every night as well and kept it tore up.
My Favorite daylily is LINDA BECK. its a beauty.

Rita, I feel sure the raccoons will find the larger pond, but what can you do?

nggraham, I am surprised that your koi died. We won't move our fish to the improved pond until spring for fear of damaging the slime coats they have built up, but they are usually quite able to withstand winter so long as there is oxygen (and a hole in ice if it forms) and you don't feed them after the temp drops under 56 degrees. I wonder what the problem could have been.

Bless you Jean. The heat is bad enough, then the index is thrown into the mix, and working outdoors is very hard. It is also dangerous if you overdo. I am fortunate that DH keeps an eye on me since I always want to do "just one more thing" when I'm outside. I have to change my clothes several times a day since it is so hot and the air conditioning is too much on the damp clothes when I come inside.

Julia, Zeke is a big eater, thus a big fish. And yes, it is still very hot here. I am so looking forward to fall this year. I hope we actually have a period of fall weather. We went almost straight from winter to summer without a lot of spring. Living in Alabama, we expect the extreme heat, but usually we have a couple of breaks with weather not so extreme. I think this is day 50 of the record heat streak. It is strange to think that July 4th was a beautiful, comfortable day, and it was the last one that was comfortable.

Here's hoping for a nice fall season, not instant winter.
