anybody growing this in florida???? my brother in tawaiian just sent ask if we grow it here? looks like it would be a good addition to the garden.

Wallisadi - I will be your friend today, lol. Have you eaten or smell durian? It is a very acquired taste. I will run from this fruit, not even think about growing with all my respects to people who really appreciate this fruit.

One time I had a shake in a Vietnamese restaurant and the first sip and tasted to me like a combination of bad squash and fish.

You can easily get it from the oriental store and give it a try, Mrs Wallisadi will run from you, lol.

Wallisadi - I love durians! It smells as bad as sweaty socks or as good as fresh popcorn, you'll either love it or hate it. Frozen durian pulp is sometimes available in Asian grocery stores but there's nothing like fresh ones just "picked up". They cannot be harvested from the tree, when ripe, they fall off the tree so during the "durian season", do not sit under durian trees! You pick it up from the ground, using leather gloves & pry it open with strong blunt knife (along the seams).

We used to call them thorny cannon balls because they are that size, weight and just plain thorny.
You have 1 volunteer here to help you open durians. :~) Yum yum!

heres a pic from the wiki link below of whole durians for sale which were frozen some excerpts i found particularly interesting: There are 30 recognised Durio species, at least nine of which produce edible fruit. Durio zibethinus is the only species available in the international market: other species are sold in their local regions. There are hundreds of durian cultivars; many consumers express preferences for specific cultivars, which fetch higher prices in the market. Each cultivar has a distinct taste and odor. More than 200 cultivars of D. zibethinus exist in Thailand. In recent times, Songpol Somsri, a Thai government scientist, crossbred more than ninety varieties of durian to create Chantaburi No. 1, a cultivar without the characteristic odor, which is awaiting final approval from the local Ministry of Agriculture. Another hybrid, Chantaburi No. 3, develops the odor about three days after the fruit is picked, which enables an odorless transport yet satisfies consumers who prefer the pungent odor. I was just glad no one had to ride in the trunk, esp me. Harry, the beer is about 4.5% alcohol, since it is a gift to a wide range of palates I tend to make them somewhat mild. On rare occasions I make barley wines or doppel helles bocks that range in the 10-12% area. A nice sipping beer for those cold Miami nights. Jay, maybe I can be durian boy's (man's) apprentice, I still have a ways to go on the durian train. That durian not only looked scary but by the time I was done cooking everything and eating the leftover durian flesh, the entire house was thick with durian funk. I had to go outside for fresh air for a couple minutes. My daughter was unfazed and today enjoyed sharing a cupcake with me, tough little kid. -Ethan

I have lots of SE Asian friends, so sooner or later I had to try Durian. I liked it. Very refreshing, and a nice mixture of fruit flavors. It does have a bit of an off smell until you take the first bite. Not as bad as Limburger cheese, not as bad as Nuoc Mam. I've read that it can be almost addictive. I know they grow it at the Tropical Fruit and Spice Park near Homestead, but I've never heard of anyone growing it this far north, and I know folks who would if they could.

John, you are right. Durian trees are very tropical.
